They were a study in contrasts behind their respective podiums: One conciliatory, holding back a deep sadness as he graciously accepted defeat. The other jubilant, smiling as he promised a new dawn for American politics.

President-elect Barack Obama and Senator John McCain no doubt had a lot of different emotions going through their heads as they each gave a speech after the election finally ended. Odd, then, that they both turned to the same man for support, the same man who could express so easily what they never could in words.

And that man was — Denzel Washington?

Movie lovers might have noticed that each man chose music from a Washington movie to play while walking offstage after their respective speeches. And, not for nothing, but we think they both made the perfect choice. Read more...

Barack ObamaAs the fireworks figuratively and literally went off at the conclusion of Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Invesco Field in Denver last night, a few observers were reminded of another powerful political speech some 13 years earlier — that of President Andrew Shepherd.

Shepherd of course ran in a hotly contested re-election campaign against Senator Bob Rumson when the whole Sydney Ellen Wade controversy was raging. Confused? Don't be. The rousing speech by Shepherd came not on a convention dais but a Hollywood soundstage. The film was "The American President" and the words were delivered passionately by Michael Douglas (and written by acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin).

It's one of those silly questions that every candidate has to face on the campaign trail. Who should play you in the movie of your life? Because clearly that should have some bearing on how we vote, right? Sarcasm aside, Barack Obama has gone on record with MTV that the guy to play him is Will Smith. And as I found out a couple days ago, Will Smith is having a laugh about it. He's not ready to sign up as his VP though quite yet. Check it out.
