Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are horror's own odd couple, THE GORE GIRLS!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.
This week, the Gore Girls decided to go easy on themselves. Wusses. "Gremlins," directed by Joe Dante, isn't strictly a horror movie. More of a comedy/horror. I'm sure a young child would be suitably terrified, and plenty of the right horror movie beats are hit, but this isn't a traditional scare flick. The story follows a young man who receives a furry little creature as a Christmas gift. The season's greetings fall apart when the beastie -- a Mogwai -- multiplies and his dopplegangers transform into hideous, green lizard-like gremlins. Read more...
I'm not telling you anything you don't already know here, but werewolves kind of kick ass. They are tragic figures, afflicted with a disease that causes them to turn into mindless, slavering beasts beneath the light of a full moon. Vampires have their own share of tragedy, but they keep it well-hidden behind layers of cunning and deceit. Werewolves are just poor souls who've been victimized by bad luck.
Today's eBay Prop-Watch is all about paying some love to the werewolves. One pack in particular, featured in director Joe Dante's classic "The Howling." Most of these werepuppies aren't tragic figures; they're awesome figures. Just like today's Prop-Watch pick. Read more...
What can I say? I'm a sucker for a gremlin. "Gremlins" even. Joe Dante's classic comedy horror flick "Gremlins" -- not to mention the criminally underrated follow-up "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" -- are delightfully entertaining relics from the '80s. One of the few surviving classics that remains untouched by Hollywood's weird fascination with franchise reboots, these are movies that still hold up today. There's plenty about them that's dated, sure. But the pair are as entertaining, as funny, as immediately memorable as they've always been.
That's why I'm featuring a second "Gremlins" item for eBay Prop-Watch in as many weeks. This is a good one too, even better than last week's gremlin head. Not only is it cheaper, it's also professionally mounted and comes packing a certificate of authenticity from our pals at The Propstore of London. Hit the jump to behold the awesome. Read more...
I usually try to maintain some degree of mystery on what the eBay Prop-Watch pick is until AFTER the break, but today's item is too cool not to rave over from the offing. "Gremlins" is a classic. Comedy/horror at its best. Director Joe Dante has been pretty quiet since 1998's "Small Soldiers" -- a highly underrated gem and definite future Sick Day Stash fodder -- but he's about to re-emerge in a big way if the buzz on his 3-D thriller "The Hole," which just picked up accolades at the Venice Film Festival, is accurate.
So. Prop-Watch. Today you're bidding on a head. A Gremlin head. Not one of those cute, cuddly Gizmo-types. The ugly, green, lizard-like beast with big cat-like eyes and two rows of gleaming white teeth. Hit the jump to see what I mean. Read more...
If you've seen either "Coraline" or Pixar's "Up" in 3-D, you might have trouble believing there's a better 3-D movie from this year. But apparently the latest from Joe Dante ("Gremlins") is just that. "The Hole," which currently has no U.S. distributor or release date, won the Venice Film Festival's new Persol 3-D award after premiering at the festival this month.
So much for my earlier claim that "it’s really only down to 'Up' and 'Coraline' as serious contenders." Even as a huge fan of Dante's work -- including the highly underrated "Small Soldiers" and "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" -- I wasn't expecting his new thriller, about a family that moves into a house with a bottomless hole in the basement, to feature better use of 3-D than those hit films. The Venice Film Festival may have lost all of its credibility now that the words “'My Bloody Valentine 3-D' is competing at Venice” can be uttered truthfully. When it was first announced a few weeks ago that the fest would feature a new 3-D award starting this year, I thought that perhaps world cinema was getting on board with the format. Apparently it’s not quite so -- at least not yet -- as today we learn that all nine films competing for the prize are from the U.S.
And yes, my joke about Venice trying to woo the Jonas Brothers to the fest may indeed be true. “Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Experience” is among the crop competing for the Persol 3-D Award, which also includes “Up,” “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Battle for Terra,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Coraline,” the seemingly too-old “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D,” and yes, “My Bloody Valentine 3-D.” Rounding out the nine is Joe Dante’s “The Hole,” which also makes its world premiere at the film festival.
