Carnahan Death Wish

Word came down earlier this week that director Joe Carnahan had already lined up his next project, hot off the success of his most recent, "The Grey." Carnahan is set to direct a remake of the Charles Bronson punk-killing classic "Death Wish."

News of the remake hit fans' ears and the world erupted in a cry of "Liam Neeson for 'Death Wish'!" but the director remained quiet about the project until Tuesday (January 31). Carnahan took to Twitter to give an update on the project and the way he intends on approaching it.

First off, Carnahan clarified exactly what the project is, a book adaptation instead of a film remake. "Guys. I'm doing 'Death Wish.' But this version is a re-imagining of the book and set in present day Los Angeles. The L.A. of 'Collateral,'" he wrote.

The A-Team on DVDWhen writer-director Joe Carnahan's adaptation of the beloved '80s TV show "The A-Team" hit theaters this summer, it seemed poised for blockbuster awesomeness. It had a built-in fanbase, a talented director and a spot-on cast -- Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper (pictured) as Faceman, UFC fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as B.A. and "District 9" star Sharlto Copley as "Howling Mad" Murdock. But for some reason it failed to find a blockbuster-sized auidence.

When Carnahan called up MTV to chat about the movie's release on DVD and Blu-ray (it hit stores December 14), he talked about why he thinks it didn't connect with audiences in theaters, dished on the Blu-ray's extended director's cut and revealed his thoughts on an "A-Team" sequel. He also spilled the beans on his "'Jaws'-like' next film "The Grey," which stars Liam Neeson as the leader of a group of oil drillers being hunted by wolves in the Arctic. Sounds chilling. Look. I don't care what the box office numbers say. "The A-Team" was awesome! It should have owned this past weekend. Instead it finished in a distant second to "The Karate Kid." It's unfortunate, but there's still plenty of time in the summer for "A-Team" to build up some steam.

Director Joe Carnahan isn't necessarily planning out a sequel with his first outing not even a week old, but he did have an idea for the "A-Team" opening which went unshot, and which he hopes to use if a sequel does happen.

"In the original opening of the film... all you saw was Hannibal with these goggles on and this kind of white environment," he explained. "You realized as the camera pulled back that there were sled dogs. As you pulled back even further you realized they were sled dogs going over the dunes in the desert." Read More...

A funny thing happens in "The A-Team." An attractive, young starlet, Jessica Biel has a lead role and yet she never once bares much more than an arm or two. In fact, it's Bradley Cooper who shows off the most skin. It's an odd gender reversal; typically, a Hollywood blockbuster puts just as strong a focus on objectifying female cast members as it does on giant explosions and over-the-top set pieces. According to Biel, who spoke to MTV's Josh Horowitz at the "A-Team" press junket, it was all part of director Joe Carnahan's plan.

"That was a big part that Joe and I talked about," she said. "This character is not gratuitous. She's not there to look cute and be pretty and be a girl thrown into the mix. She's really there for a plot reason. She's the lynchpin of the story." Read More...

The Ring-- Thankfully, you have more than seven days to prepare yourself for "Ring 3D," the third installment in the horror franchise centering on a killer video creature. The 3-D film comes from "Dream House" writer David Loucka and is being billed as "more teen-centric" than the two Naomi Watts-starring outings. [Heat Vision]

-- Jason Statham isn't coming to the small screen, but "The Transporter" is. Luc Besson's EuropaCorp is teaming up with Atlantique Prods. for twelve one-hour episodes of a "Transporter" television series. Production is expected to begin in early 2011. [Variety]

-- "The A-Team" director Joe Carnahan isn't closed off to a Mr. T cameo, though he suggested that such a role might be better left for a sequel. "He'd be a great villain, totally unexpected," Carnahan teased. "Wouldn't that be perfect?" [Empire] Read More...

"The A-Team." Does anyone hear or read that title without the iconic theme song popping into their heads? I guess maybe some of you younger readers aren't as familiar, but I have to believe that years in syndication have kept the TV-spawned mercenary group alive for successive generations.

No worries if you're clueless though; Joe Carnahan has got you covered. The "Smokin' Aces" writer/director is following up his 2006 action flick with an adaptation of the classic TV series, and all signs so far point to "awesome." Just peep the trailer:

I love the bit with the parachuting tank and the fighter jet. That sort of action moment just screams "holy crap." Read More...

Whenever a classic franchise like “The A-Team” is adapted for the big screen, it’s no surprise that fans are fascinated by cameos from original cast members. From Mr. T to Dwight Schultz, director Joe Carnahan has been open about where he stands with the original commandos. Now, Bradley Cooper is spilling the beans on the details behind the Dirk Benedict cameo that will bring two famous Face-Men together.

“He plays a guy named Milt,” Cooper said of Benedict’s scene, which teases both actors’ good looks as well as the vanity of Templeton Peck. “We’re in a tanning bed, in prison together.” Read More...

All week long, we’ve been giving you an exclusive look at the new “A-Team,” featuring peeks at B.A. Baracus, “Howlin’ Mad” Murdock, the villainous Lynch, Face-Man and Hannibal. Now, we bid adieu to the crack commando unit with the main new character of the bunch: Sexy Jessica Biel as Lieutenant Sosa.

“Jessie, she's a captain with DCIS, which is the Defense Criminal Investigative Service,” director Joe Carnahan explained of the new character, who shares an uncomfortable dating history with Bradley Cooper’s Face. “They’re basically the department of the defense, and she supersedes [military officials] - if she goes on a base, it doesn't matter if you’re a general, she can supplant you.” Read More...
