After release date changes and some other unrelated misfortunes, "The Beaver" is finally bowing in theaters (In NYC and LA today, elsewhere May 20). There is a lot to admire about this film, to be perfectly honest. The performances, the uniquely-crafted story of a man battling mental illness, and puppets. Also, Hollywood veteran Jodie Foster starred in and directed the film.

When MTV News caught up with Foster during the press day for "The Beaver," we asked her to walk us through the challenges of acting and directing at the same time.

"Acting and directing at the same time is a very bad idea, don’t do it at home. My first movie I acted and directed in [1994's tear-jerker 'Little Man Tate'] I remember saying to myself, 'Hmm, I’m not gonna do this again.' It’s – it’s tiring!" she admitted. "But at the same time, you do manage to get the performance you were hoping for. Sometimes you wish you had more choices because very often you don’t surprise yourself, you just bring to the table what you were anticipating and you don’t surprise yourself enough."

Neil Blomkamp's much buzzed-about upcoming film "Elysium" had many of us sold even before its stellar cast was announced. Mostly because his first film, "District 9," was SO great! But now with all the star power of Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura and my favorite, William Fichtner, the movie is pretty much a must-see. Even if we have to wait until March 8, 2013, to see it.

Although details are scarce, I managed to get Jodie Foster to talk briefly about her role as an alien head of state during the press day for "The Beaver" on Tuesday.

When asked whether her character will be a good or bad alien ruler, Foster said she'll be a little bit of both.

"I'm kind of evil-ish, yes, I'm kind of evil-ish, which you know I love," she said. "I'm just excited to work with Neil Blomkamp, the director of "District 9," which I think is pretty much as close to a perfect film that I can think of, and Matt Damon, who I'm a big fan of, and Sharlto Copley."

Jodie FosterFor science fiction fans, there are few films worth getting excited about more than "Elysium." It's the latest (and therefore still mysterious) project from "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp, who is reuniting with the lead actor of that film, Sharlto Copley, as well as a growing cast list that includes Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.

Well… maybe not Jodie Foster. The actress has been connected to the project since early January, potentially marking her glorious return to the sci-fi world since her celebrated turn in "Contact." But Foster says that talk of her involvement with "Elysium" is premature at best in a new interview with Empire.

"Actually, I’m not on that movie," she revealed. "I don’t know how that got out there."

Matt DamonLots of good news for Neil Blomkamp on the "Elysium" front. First and foremost, Sony Pictures has snapped up the rights to the "District 9" director's upcoming sci-fi flick, which is set to star Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster.

Deadline has been following the development, and was able to confirm that Sony will be distributing the film on its own, without the rumored involvement of Universal Pictures. Not a huge surprise, since the company was also responsible for distributing "District 9," Blomkamp's only other feature. Read More...

Jodie FosterMore good news for Neill Blomkamp's second feature, "Elysium." The film already has Matt Damon and "District 9" star Sharlto Copley attached to star, and now, according to Deadline, Jodie Foster has committed to the sci-fi flick as well.

Details are scarce on the "Elysium" plot, but we do know that the film takes place on a distant planet in the distant future (we're sensing that distance is a theme here). That's a bit of a step away from Blomkamp's hit "District 9," which took place on our planet in the near future, and showed a pretty accurate portrayal (in my opinion) of what could happen if aliens came to Earth. It's no secret that Mel Gibson isn't exactly the most liked person in show business these days. After several controversial comments and allegations of domestic abuse, among other similar difficulties, Gibson's public image could certainly use a helping hand — the kind that a cameo role in "The Hangover 2" won't fix, apparently.

But maybe he'll find redemption through his latest starring role in "The Beaver." The first official trailer for Jodie Foster's first directorial effort in 15 years arrived online over the weekend, and based on the story information we're treated to in the trailer, it appears that "The Beaver" hits rather close to home for Gibson. Despite being resigned to filming his upcoming film "God of Carnage" overseas in France, Roman Polanski had recruited some of Hollywood's best to star in the upcoming adaptation of Yasmina Reza's Tony-winning play. Christoph Waltz, Matt Dillon, Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster have been cast as film's four leads.

There's no news on which characters from the play each of the actors will play, but they will end up being cast in the roles of two married couples who meet after their children get in a fight at school. The story is set in Brooklyn, though since Polanski is not allowed in the United States he is filming it in Paris for 12 weeks starting in February. Read More...

Mel GibsonWhat a strange and winding road films take! When I first reported on "The Beaver" it was a blurb on Steve Carell's pre-production slate. The story of a depressed man and his beaver puppet seemed like a natural fit for the actor, who often veers into tragi-comedy in his movie and television roles.

The plot thickened when Jim Carrey expressed interest. In addition, rumors put Jodie Foster behind the camera. We've now reached "stranger in a strange land" territory, as Mel Gibson appears to be stepping into the leading role. Read More...

Jim CarreyJim Carrey has definitely suffered some setbacks in recent years, but it's a strange thing to see him having to complete with another comedic actor, or possibly be a second choice when it comes to casting. But that's what's going on with "The Beaver," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kyle Killen's script for "The Beaver" has been one of the most buzzed about scripts this year. Centered around a man whose constant companion is a beaver puppet, it's drawing a lot of comparisons to "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Being John Malkovich." Killen's script even topped "The Black List," a collection of the best unproduced work kicking around Hollywood. Late last year, it attracted interest from Steve Carell and Jay Roach. Roach was loosely attached to direct Carell in the lead. Read More...
