Skyfall

Goodbye "Untitled James Bond 23" code title, hello "Skyfall." At long last, the name for Sam Mendes' take on the 007 franchise has been revealed, along with some other key details about the project.

Director Sam Mendes met with 100 journalists at a London press launch for the flick to offer some details about the secretive production. However, according to a report written up by Reuters, Mendes still wasn't ready to give everything away. He confirmed a number of the actors involved in the project -- including Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes -- but could "give you very little information about" the characters they're playing. Still, fans looking for some more details to chew on should be happy with the tidbits Mendes let slip today.

AvatarNobody is dead forever in James Cameron's sci-fi universe, so don't expect Sigourney Weaver to be sitting out of "Avatar 2."

"When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!" he explained in an interview with Vulture. "

But that's not his only explanation for how the late Doctor Grace Augustine might return to the "avatar" universe: "Have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for fifteen years ahead of time."

Johnny DeppThe diagnosis isn't quite so grim as we might have thought on cancelled film projects "The Lone Ranger" and "The Dark Tower."

Bad news first: The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Gore Verbinski and the folks with "The Lone Ranger" have been trying to resolve the budget crisis that led Disney to pull the plug on the flick, but it might be to no avail. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" director managed to drop the film's planned budget from $244 million to $242 million, but Disney wants it to be closer to $220. That will involve some cutbacks from the cast and crew that THR doesn't think they're willing to make. Still, negotiations are negotiations, and there might be some wiggle room to get this Johnny Depp-starring movie off the ground.

Fortunately, things are looking up for Ron Howard's "The Dark Tower" adaptation.

Dark TowerSo… is Javier Bardem not locked in for "The Dark Tower" after all?

In a new interview about the project, director Ron Howard confirms that production has been pushed back due to "budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical interviews," but it's his comments about Bardem that have our eyebrows raised.

"I can't really say who'll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest," he told Entertainment Weekly. "We'll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid."

Javier BardemJavier Bardem, you have reached "The Dark Tower."

After months of casting rumors that eventually squared firmly on the "psychologically" locked Spanish actor, it now appears all but certain that Bardem will step into the role of gunslinger Roland Deschain. Deadline has the news (and we say thankya) that Bardem is close enough to completing his deal that director Ron Howard is already meeting with other actors to cast roles based on Bardem's commitment to a trilogy of films and a limited television run between each movie.

Bardem's nearly-sealed deal isn't the only casting news in the movies world today. After the jump, learn who's been cast as the villain opposite Jonah Hill in "21 Jump Street," who's playing a femme fatale in "The Three Stooges" and much more!

With the ever-changing, ever-flowing news cycle surrounding the goings on in the film industry these days, it gets tougher and tougher to get concerned parties to actually confirm or break news. Nevertheless, our tireless team of intrepid reporters here at MTV News will not give up in trying to push people for info! Like whenever we happen upon super producer Brian Grazer and pump him for details about "The Dark Tower," for example...

The last time we checked in with Grazer, the Roland casting process was moving along, but slowly. When I stopped him while on his way into the Vanity Fair Oscar party last Sunday, solely with the purpose of peppering him about the reported casting of Javier Bardem as the ruthless gunslinger, he seemed pleasantly puzzled by the fact that MTV is so interested in the project.

"'Dark Tower,' Javier Bardem, that's what we're hoping," Grazer said when I asked him for an update. "We're in the process of trying to put that together. Will that make you happy? Will that make MTV happy?"

When it comes to the Best Actor race, no one is stammering about who's going to win.

All signs point to a decisive victory for Colin Firth, who delivered a masterful turn as a stuttering king-in-the-making in Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech," on Sunday night (February 27) at the 2011 Oscars. As a veritable king himself lording over awards season, Firth's virtual sweep is likely to end this Sunday with an exclamation mark, not a stutter.

That's not to say there aren't other deserving candidates in the Best Actor category — candidates that could pull an upset and overcome the seemingly insurmountable Firth, in fact. After the jump, read our analysis and weigh in yourself by voting on YOUR pick for Best Actor!

Javier BardemWell, this is very good news indeed: Javier Bardem, previously rumored for an unspecified starring role in the untitled "James Bond 23," has confirmed that he's been approached for the film… and he's intrigued.

The Los Angeles Times sat down for a chat with the "Biutiful" actor and covered the recent "Bond" news, with Bardem admitting that an offer has been made. Though he won't accept or reject the role until he's read the screenplay, Bardem confessed that the opportunity to join Bond's wide world of espionage and intrigue is more than a little bit appealing.

"I'm a huge fan of the James Bond saga," said the actor. "When I was little, I went watching Mr. Connery doing James Bond with my father. Who in the world would think I'd be in one of those movies?" Read More...
