Cop Land

Director James Mangold might be known more today for his big-budget fare like "Knight and Day" and his next film, "The Wolverine" with Hugh Jackman, but in 1997, he was just a few years out of film school and putting together his second feature film "Cop Land." The modern day western touted an impressive cast of Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Sylvester Stallone, who packed 40 pounds to play the half-deaf Sheriff Freddy Heflin.

A new Blu-ray edition of "Cop Land" arrived in stores just this week, and Mangold spoke with MTV News to look back on his second film more than a decade later.

Seriously, how can anyone keep track of the ridiculous number of "Wizard of Oz" sequel, prequel and spin-off projects that are currently in development? There's "Oz, The Great and Powerful," starring Robert Downey Jr. and possibly being directed by Sam Raimi, which explores the story of how the Wizard came to preside over Oz. There's also Todd McFarlane's rather unique vision of the universe, "The Twisted Land of Oz," which is set many years after the 1939. And "Oz: The Return to Emerald City," from "History of Violence" writer Josh Olson.

The big papa among them is also the one with the least development (as far as we know): an adaptation of Gregory Maguire's 1995 book "Wicked," which details the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story has already been adapted into a hit Broadway musical, a movie version of which has long been in development. Now it seems there's some momentum building, as Deadline reports that some of the Broadway production's key figures have met with a number of talented filmmakers -- specifically James Mangold, Rob Marshall, Ryan Murphy and J.J. Abrams -- about taking on the gig.

Who would you choose? Why? After the jump I consider the four candidates (so far) and pit them against one another in a battle to the death! Or, you know, just talk a little bit about each one. Whichever works. Read More...

There was a time awhile back when "Knight and Day" director James Mangold was rumored to be in the running for the job of directing "Breaking Dawn," a gig that has since gone to Bill Condon. MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke with Mangold recently about this week's Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz-starring action-comedy, and he managed to squeeze in a question about what happened there with those "Breaking Dawn" rumors.

"I guess they must have been seriously considering it, but I don't know how I got into that," Mangold said with amusement. "A lot of times in the trades what happens is people... they think you'd be good for something, so they actually tell the reporter that you'd be good for it. And somehow that evolves into you doing it." That said, the director has nothing at all against Stephenie Meyer's uber-popular vampire series. Read More...

I don't know a whole lot about "Wichita." James Mangold is directing a powerhouse leading man and lady in stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The story involves a woman (Diaz) who is inadvertently pulled into a global plot while out on a blind date with a man (Cruise) who turns out to be a government agent.

None of that really matters for the purposes of this post though. That image below comes from the set of "Wichita," which is currently shooting in Boston. There are more for you to enjoy. Click the image below to check out our newly added "Wichita" set photos.

-- The Sundance Film Festival will add the Next section for next year's gathering. The category will showcase six to eight films which make "innovative and original" use of low-/no-budget features. I wonder if "District 9" would have made the cut. (Variety)

-- Buried in a report on the upcoming lineup for Dino De Laurentiis Co., it was revealed that an adaptation of Karen Russell's novel "St. Lucy's Home For Girls Raised By Wolves" is in the works. The story follows a group of girls raised by werewolves as they are being prepared to interact with civilized society. (Variety) Read More...

Tom CruiseTom Cruise and Cameron Diaz just might save James Mangold's romantic comedy from expiring forever. According to Variety, the actors are in talks to join a Fox comedy that has changed titles and casts a few times over already.

Now untitled, but once known as "Trouble Man" and "Wichita", the story centers on that romantic comedy staple: a woman who has terrible luck with men. A blind date introduces her to a handsome and mysterious man, and their paths end up intertwined. From the old "Trouble Man" title, I'm guessing that "paths intertwined" isn't in the star crossed, Edward and Bella sense, but in something a little more dangerous or weird. Read More...

'Twilight'The "Twilight" franchise has officially replaced Batman for crazy rumors and speculation, causing many a Twilight fan to pull their hair out. Lately, the focus has been behind the camera as everyone seems to be in the running to direct the third installment, "Eclipse."

Drew Barrymore's possible involvement caused the most stir, with many doubting that she had the directing chops needed. Barrymore has only one film under her belt, the soon-to-be-released "Whip It!", but many actors successfully transition to directing. So why not? Read More...
