You don't have to look far to find some serious badasses at the movies this year, but in the end, there's only room for five of these fearsome foes to compete for the Biggest Badass Star at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards — and, of course, only one of them can walk away as the winner.

Robert Downey Jr., "Iron Man 2"
Tony Stark is pretty much the epitome of badassery: he's a hard-drinking billionaire beloved by women everywhere, and he gets to enjoy his perpetual partying lifestyle while kicking bad guy butt inside the comfort of his technologically superior Iron Man armor. Doesn't get much more badass than that.

The hunt for Gale and Peeta is over. After weeks of speculation, Lionsgate has announced that Liam Hemsworth ("The Last Song") and Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right") are heading for the big screen version of Suzanne Collins' insanely addictive series "The Hunger Games" to play male leads Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark respectively, reports Hollywood Crush.
Hemsworth and Hutcherson join Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who was chosen to play "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss Everdeen last month. Both actors expressed interest in the highly anticipated project, which will be directed by Gary Ross. Hutcherson disclosed his feelings on the character, saying: "The character is so much who I am — self deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play!"
Meanwhile, back in January, Hemsworth had hinted to MTV that he could very well be taking on the role of the stoic, first true love of Katniss, Gale. While Hemsworth had not met with Ross at the time, he confirmed he did read the script and told us, "[It's] a really, really cool story," adding, "[It's] super dark. It's all young kids in these Hunger Games, which are crazy, insane things."

Will Smith is creating himself a family dynasty. He's already a well-established blockbuster star, and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith ,has had her share of lead roles -- but now it's time to really get their kids Jaden and Willow involved.
They're already off to a good start. Jaden first starred alongside his dad in "The Pursuit of Happyness," and then scored his breakout role in the remake of the 1980s classic "The Karate Kid" (which was produced by Papa Smith). Will has movie plans for Willow, too, who is best known for whipping her hair as a young rapperess. According to Variety, Smith is in discussions with Sony to produce a remake of the musical movie classic "Annie" starring his 10-year-old daughter and featuring the musical stylings of none other than Jay-Z.
With "The Karate Kid" reboot already a success and "Annie" sounding like a sure box-office win, we got to mulling which other which classics Smith might soon try to reboot as starring vehicles for his kids. Read more...

M. Night Shyamalan's movies are always shrouded in the utmost secrecy, so getting him to divulge anything is near impossible. When MTV News caught up with Night on the National Board of Review Awards red carpet, we took a crack at it anyway, asking the director about his upcoming film "One Thousand A.E.," which has Jaden Smith set to star.
When we asked him if he'd be making "One Thousand A.E." his next film, Night replied, "It's starting to look like the Smith family and Shyamalan will be doing a movie together." The Smith family, you say? Of course, we had to ask if that meant that Will, Jada and Willow might also appear in the flick, to which Night laughed: "You never know. Their dog maybe... Any Smith that wants to work in my film can work in my film." Read more...

MTV News has always had a soft spot for M. Night Shyamalan, so we're heartened by the news that he's is getting right back in the saddle after his last big-screen venture, "The Last Airbender," failed to connect with U.S. audiences. According to Heat Vision blog, Night is looking to direct a super-secret sci-fi film he isn't writing ("The Book of Eli" screenwriter Gary Whitta is) called "One Thousand A.E.," which would be a starring vehicle for newly minted "It Kid" Jaden Smith.
Smith proved with this summer's surprise $176.6-million hit "The Karate Kid" that he can be just as big a box office draw as his dad Will, and Shyamalan is due for a hit after the back-to-back-back box-office disappointments of "Lady in the Water," "The Happening" and "Last Airbender." If "A.E." is a success, it could cement Smith's celebrity power and potentially revitalize Shyamalan's career. While the film is still looking for a studio home, Shyamalan is developing it at Will Smith's Overbrook production company and will likely end up at Sony. Read more...

Considering that this year's Jaden Smith-starring return to "The Karate Kid" actually dealt with the martial art of kung fu, today's news about the coming sequel is sort of fitting. Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff, the writing duo who penned the fairly excellent 2008 CG-animated flick "Kung Fu Panda," have been hired to pen a "Kid" sequel, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.
The June release went from a $40 million-budgeted perceived longshot into a global hit. "The Karate Kid" has grossed more than $300 million to date; the rapid success resulted in a sequel being put into development almost immediately. Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment, which produced the movie, will take on similar duties for the sequel. Columbia did not reveal anything about the story or the location; today's writers announcement is in fact the first real news to emerge about the sequel since it was confirmed several months ago.

There's no denying the powerful dynamic between original "Karate Kid" protagonists Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi, but actors Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith proved that their chemistry knows no bounds either in the recent "Karate Kid" remake.
It seems that the pair struck up something of a formidable friendship, too, as our Daily TwitPic clearly evidences. Jaden celebrated his 12th birthday yesterday, you see, and while Mr. Chan may not have been there in person to celebrate alongside his on-screen student, he was right there on Twitter to proudly mark the occasion with a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of "The Karate Kid." Jaden Smith pulled off a miraculous thing this past weekend. That he's only 11 years old makes it even more impressive. Against all odds, a rebooted take on the classic '80s flick "The Karate Kid" attracted almost $60 million worth of audiences in its opening weekend. An impressive start.
Being that Jaden's dad is frequent franchise player Will Smith, how long will it be before we see the little guy popping in his dad's movies? Soon enough! Click the image below to explore Jaden's coming contributions to papa Will's best-known classics!

He's only 11 years old -- 12, in July -- and yet Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood couple Will and Jada, has already gotten star billing in two big ticket movies: "The Pursuit of Happyness," with his dad, in 2006; and "The Day the Earth Stood Still," with Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly, in 2008. This weekend, young Jaden opened his first summer blockbuster, starring alongside Jackie Chan in a revival of the '80s classic, "The Karate Kid." Boy oh boy did he open it... "Kid" premiered to a weekend box office total of $56 million, more than doubling what fellow opener (and '80s revival) "The A-Team" took in.
The coming weeks will paint a better picture of course, but it's fair to say that "The Karate Kid" is on track to become this year's "The Blind Side," last year's Sandra Bullock-starring drama which turned into a surprise box office giant. Whatever it is that draws crowds to Jaden's kung fu stylings, it's clearly working. Now the young actor finds himself at a crossroads: how to best leverage this newfound success to benefit his burgeoning career. Read more...
