Chris PineMeet James Kirk, the fearless Starfleet captain whose wits are matched only by his willingness to throw himself into danger. Meet Jack Ryan, the razor-sharp analyst who will one day become the President of the United States.

Chances are good that you've already met both of these men, but only one of them is coming soon to a theater near you — for now, at least.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures is putting its planned Jack Ryan reboot on the backburner for now while they focus on "Star Trek 2," which could start production as soon as this fall. Leading man Chris Pine is the actor tasked with playing both Kirk and Ryan, but it looks like we'll be seeing him in his familiar Starfleet uniform before he dons Ryan's suit-and-tie.

It's been awhile since we've had any news of the Jack Ryan reboot, for which Paramount tapped "Star Trek" star Chris Pine to take over the Ryan role last year. Now, according to New York Magazine's "Vulture" blog, the new film is apparently close to officially locking in a director: "Lost" executive producer and frequent director Jack Bender.

The film's plot reportedly revolves around a fresh-from-the-Marines Jack Ryan as he goes to work as an analyst for a Russian billionaire, only to be implicated in a U.S. economy-crippling terrorist plot that sends him on the run and on a mission to clear his name.

As Vulture points out, Bender is an interesting choice to direct given that his last feature was "Child's Play 3" and his other directing credits were on the J.J. Abrams/Bad Robot TV productions: "Alias," "Felicity" and "Lost." He's also got a one-year gig with Bad Robot to develop a TV pilot for WB TV. However if Abrams has given Bender his blessing, it's likely Paramount will do the same. Read More...

So it's official. First Alec Baldwin, followed by Harrison Ford, then Ben Affleck for a hot minute, and now Chris Pine. The "Star Trek" star will take over the role of Jack Ryan in the first adaptation of Tom Clancy's book series since 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."

Just before this confirmation dropped—courtesy of producer Mace Neufeld—MTV News spoke with Pine about the prospect of becoming Ryan on-screen. After blowing people away with his reworking of William Shatner's iconic take on James T. Kirk, how hard could it be to make Ryan his own? No easy feat, Pine said, but undoubtedly less daunting than his "Star Trek" challenge. Read More...

A few weeks back, some rumblings made the Internet rounds concerning the possibility of George Clooney stepping in as the next Jack Ryan. The Tom Clancy character has been previously played by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin, and Clooney seemed like a perfectly viable fourth. With no "Ocean's" movie on the horizon and the actor's remaining 2009 projects serving up quirkier fare, Ryan's smooth government official would put Clooney back in the leading man saddle.

So when I sat down to chat with "G.I. Joe" producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura two weekends ago, I couldn't help but ask him for an update on his Jack Ryan project. Specifically, how Clooney factors into it. Di Bonaventura had just two words for the actor: "Sorry George." Read More...

Harrison FordIt's been a rough few years for longtime admirers of Harrison Ford. There was "Hollywood Homicide" and "K19: The Widowmaker" (which had the distinction of actually being worse than it's horrible title made it sound) and we're going to take the high road and not even get into "Firewall." But thankfully maybe the massive box office success of the four "Indiana Jones" this past summer will propel Mr. Ford to bigger and better things once again? Maybe?

Ford told us about the progress of a fifth Indy film the other day but before that one gets off the ground he told us he's set his sights on one of two projects: "I have a comedy that’s been developed by J.J. Abrams and a drama that I developed that talks about the pharmaceutical industry. We haven’t sorted out which is first yet." Read More...
