The 2010 Golden Globe nominations hit this morning. As per usual, this triggered a stream of reactions from celebrities and the press that covers them. You can't have an awards show without a little bit of post-nomination griping. Which of course paves the way for post-win griping. As you might expect, eyes are primarily focused on the Globes' two biggest categories: Best Drama and Best Comedy/Musical. So that's the first one we're going to consider too: what's right, what isn't, who's deserving, who's notably absent... Read More...

The Princess and the Frog1. "The Princess and the Frog" ($25 million)
2. "The Blind Side" ($15.5 million)
3. "Invictus" ($9.1 million)
4. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($8 million)
5. "A Christmas Carol" ($6.9 million)

There's no scientific proof that kissing a frog can turn the creature into a prince, but the exchange of cold-hard cash for theater admission can certainly turn a frog-centric film into a royal hit. Such was the case with "The Princess and the Frog," Disney's animated picture that easily won first place at the box office this past weekend. Read More...

3. "Invictus" ($2.9 million)
4. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($2.4 million)
5. "A Christmas Carol" ($1.7 million)

Neither the global crush on Robert Pattinson nor the surprising success of Sandra Bullock could measure up to Disney's epic return to hand-drawn animation in "The Princess and the Frog." The Disney picture easily won first place at the box office on Friday with $7.5 million, combining with earlier sales for a cumulative domestic total of just under $10 million. Read More...

Okay, that headline's a joke. Well the quote is real, but the speaker was only kidding. Director Clint Eastwood will follow up tomorrow's "Invictus" with "Hereafter," which is tentatively scheduled for release late next year. Gaga and Swift have nothing to do with the project; Eastwood was merely referring to an earlier moment in the interview, when the two pop stars came up, along with everybody's favorite vampire series, "Twilight."

In truth, little has been said about "Hereafter." So that's exactly what MTV's Josh Horowitz questioned Eastwood about when the two spoke during the "Invictus" press tour. The director didn't quite go as far as delving into spoiler territory, but he did run through a basic idea of what the story's all about. Read More...

"Invictus" star Morgan Freeman is a familiar and comforting presence in his film appearances, almost distractingly so at this point in his career (particularly when he's playing more of a villain role, as in "Wanted"). Close to 20 years of his grandfatherly demeanor onscreen has made his performances somewhat difficult to take seriously. When you’re sitting in the theater watching “Invictus” this Friday, at no point are you going to be thinking, “Hey, there’s Nelson Mandela up there.” You’re going to be like, “Aw snap, listen to Morgan Freeman’s South African accent. That’s adorable.”

I say it’s high time we start intentionally putting Freeman in even more recognizable leading roles. This is an actor who audiences have already accepted as the creator of the universe. Twice. He can play anything and anyone on screen and the audience will accept it. As the film industry plots out its next series of historical biopics, blockbusters and Oscar-baiters over the next decade, here are the roles they should consider Freeman for. Read More...

There's only a single brand-new wide release this week, and it's "Invictus." Set in post-apartheid South Africa, the story follows Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) as he joins with the country's national rugby team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) in the hopes of uniting his scattered nation. In addition to featuring a dynamite cast, "Invictus" also happens to be the latest directorial effort from Clint Eastwood.

Also getting a big opening this week is Disney's triumphant return to 2-D animation with "The Princess and the Frog," which was previously only available in limited release. It opens on more than 3,000 screens this weekend, an even higher number than the 2,000+ for "Invictus." It's a (somewhat) contemporary fairy tale about young New Orleans girl who sets out to find a local voodoo priestess after she is magically transformed into a frog. Read More...

One of Friday's releases this week is "Invictus," a sports movie set against the backdrop of post-apartheid South Africa. Morgan Freeman stars as Nelson Mandela, opposite Matt Damon, as South African Rugby World Cup team captain Francois Pienaar. Mandela embarks on a campaign to bring his scattered people together when he takes an interest in Pienaar and his team.

In the exclusive clip below, you can see Mandela discussing the state of political affairs in South Africa with his chief of staff, Brenda Mazibuko, played by Adjoa Andoh.

You'd think that "The Informant!" star Matt Damon and filmmaker Clint Eastwood would right now be preparing to promote their first collaboration, Oscar-bait "Invictus," which is due for a mid-December release. And they probably are, but that doesn't mean other business is being ignored. As Variety reports today, the director and star are all set to get the band back together for another project, titled "Hereafter."

There's not much to go on in terms of plot points just yet. The article states that Warner Bros. isn't saying much, other than describing the project as a supernatural thriller in the vein of "The Sixth Sense." I wasn't a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan's breakout, but Eastwood is a more nuanced filmmaker; here's hoping he doesn't pin this new movie's success to a single, mind-bending twist. The script comes from "Frost/Nixon" writer Peter Morgan, who will also produce alongside Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Tim Moore. Read More...
