Lots of good stuff popping around the blogosphere today. The problem with these round-up posts is that it's hard to really collect everything. Feel free to tip me here though; with so much stuff to file through, I will undoubtedly miss things. If you feel there's something that might be suitable for Around the Blogosphere, hit me up at tips@mtvmoviesblog.com. For now though, here's the latest set of click-worthy links...
-- MTV contributor Jenni Miller has a great opinion piece up at Cinematical about director Mark Duplass's Sundance darling "Humpday," which is now out in limited release. Take a look at our exclusive clip if you don't know about the movie, which also features Joshua Leonard ("The Blair Witch Project") in a starring role. Jenni contends that "Humpday" is not in fact a bromance movie, despite the heavy overtones of straight male-on-straight male action. A well thought out and easy to digest set of observations. "Humpday" tells the story of what happens when two lifelong friends, now grown men, meet after a long separation. They meet and decide to make a movie. A gay porn movie. So... uhhh... yeah. Fun times, right?
Pals Ben (Mark Duplass) and Andrew (Joshua Leonard) step in front of the camera in this exclusive clip for their pre-shoot confessional. You know: who they are, what led them to this point, why they're making the movie... and so on. And then the moment arrives... or does it? The clip ends as they're preparing to do the deed, so you'll have to catch director Lynn Shelton's "Humpday" in theaters this weekend to find out what happens.
I have to say, I am very surprised by this week's Box Office Poll numbers. I'm tabulating the results a bit earlier than usual, so there's still a few hours for things to turn around before the poll closes of course. As things stand right now however, the weekend indie offering of "Humpday," "Blood: The Last Vampire" and "Soul Power" is leading the crowd with 33% of your votes. I wonder how many of those votes also went towards Duncan Jones' excellent sci-fi flick "Moon," which opens wide today.
Sacha Baron Cohen's "Brüno" isn't trailing too far behind, nor is the Paul Rust/Hayden Panettiere-led rom-com "I Love You, Beth Cooper," which earned 30% and 29% of your votes, respectively. Only a small percentage of you are opting to stay in (4%), and even fewer (3%) are trekking out to theaters for an earlier release. Read more...
What do you do if you’re making a movie about making a porn flick? You do your freaking research obviously, which is the position “Humpday” star Josh Leonard found himself in when gearing up to shoot the indie movie about two straight college buddies who reunite in their 30s to make a gay porn in the somewhat misguided name of art.
“I started researching porn on the Internet about ten, twelve years ago, because I knew I would use it for something,” he joked with MTV News during a recent interview. “I thought it was important to be an aficionado. You’ve heard how Daniel Day-Lewis researches his roles – he goes deep. I’m following that template.” Read more...
Happy post-Independence Day Monday! I hope you all had a restful long weekend. I wasn't around on Thursday to wrap up last week's poll, so let's take a quick look at those numbers now.
"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" edged out "Public Enemies" by a fairly hefty margin, with the 3-D animated family comedy taking 61% of your votes to the period gangster flick's 37%. "Transformers" and its preceding summer pals have seemingly been kicked to the curb, as only 1% of you ventured forth to check out older releases. The limited release world was similarly uninspiring, also earning 1% of your love. At least you're getting out of the house though! There weren't even enough votes to earn "staying home and watching TV" a measly percentage point.
Now, let's take a look at what this week has in store... Read more...
"Humpday" is the type of movie with a plot that intrigues you, actors that endear themselves to you -- and a mind-numbing lack of focus that sucker punches you in the face repeatedly until you just want to give up and walk out.
Here's the breakdown: Two straight guys get loaded one night, come up with the wild idea of making a porn film, but can't think of a taboo left to be broken. When some free-minded girls convince them that sex between two straight men is the only virgin snow left to trample upon, the two "bro-mance" buddies keep daring one another to back down ... as the actuality of the situation keeps looming larger. Lynn Shelton's "Humpday" is already generating buzz, and it hasn't even hit Sundance yet. The film will premiere at the festival (and we'll be bringing you the exclusive trailer when it does), but for now we've got an exclusive clip of this bromantic comedy and an intro from the director herself.
Lynn Shelton: "Straight guys can be funny fellows. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em to death, but the way they seem capable of turning any situation into a game of one-upmanship--even with their closest buddies--can be a pretty awesome spectacle. 'Humpday' takes this syndrome of hetero guy competitiveness to a new, ironic extreme: two straight friends outduding each other by attempting to do each other." Check it out after the jump.
