Anna Paquin in 'True Blood'Walking down the street a couple weeks ago I passed a poster promoting something called the “Vampire Rights Amendment.” Maybe you did, too. It didn’t register at first -- living in New York, one grows accustomed to all sorts of civic grievance. The next time I encountered one of these posters, though, I went home and looked up the VRA online, and was, first of all, surprised to find it online, and then to discover that it was part of an elaborate, under-the-radar ad campaign for an upcoming cable series called “True Blood.” Okay, I was roped in.

I’ve since acquired the first two episodes of the show, and a considerable amount of obscure information related thereto. “True Blood” is drawn from the eight “Southern Vampire Mysteries” written by Mississippi novelist Charlaine Harris, who among other things, I gather, is a former weightlifter. I mean no disrespect. These books are apparently very popular; naturally I haven’t heard of them before this. They chronicle the unusual adventures of a telepathic Louisiana barmaid (already it’s getting good) named Sookie Stackhouse, whose backwoodsy hometown of Bon Temps is apparently infested with werewolves, witches, shape-shifters and, of course, vampires. In fact, the sheriff is a vampire. In fact, Sookie dates a vampire. Sex abuse and serial killing also crop up, but let’s stick with the supernaturals. Read more...

jeremy piven“Sex and the City” did it. “Da Ali G Show” did it too (well, kinda). “The Sopranos” have been rumored to want to do it for years. Given the seeming inevitability these days of hot HBO properties becoming movies, why is it that we haven’t ever heard anything about a possible big-screen “Entourage.”

Cause it probably ain’t ever going to happen, Jeremy Piven insisted.

“We’ve never discussed an ‘Entourage’ movie and I think we have a few years left in us [on TV]. We’re just about to finish our fifth season and it does feel like our best yet,” Piven told MTV News. “So I think we have a few more years and then if they’re not sick of us, maybe we’ll do a movie.” Read more...

"Extras" star Ricky Gervais is known for his say-anything brand of snarky humor, so we kinda knew what to expect when we asked him to give us an intro during a visit to the set of his new film, "Ghost Town." The result is the amazing display of awesomeness that you'll see below as Gervais goes into stream of consciousness mode. When you're done with that, click here to read Gervais discussing the film and his HBO series.

Like most of us, Claire Danes is a fervent fan of Ricky Gervais' latest comedy series, "Extras." So when she co-starred with Gervais in "Stardust," the first thing on her mind was trying to snag an appearance on his BBC/HBO show. So how'd she fare? Watch the video below to find out.

If Hollywood's been calling, "Sopranos" creator David Chase hasn't been picking up…until now? While rumors of a theatrical leap have persisted since the ratings juggernaut's launch nearly a decade ago, Chase has repeatedly gunned down prospects of seeing Tony's adventures on the big screen. With the series now winding down its final season however, the pressure is intense to continue the saga of the mafia don.

But while Chase is steadfast that he's told the complete story of Gandolfini and friends, a recent conversation between the helmer and fellow HBO alum, "Oz" producer Tom Fontana, may provide the inspiration he needs to get a studio meeting. "[Fontana] said you could do a story about the Sopranos' grandparents first coming to this country," Chase told us. "I had never thought about that. That was interesting to me."

The Italian immigrant experience has seen its share of cinematic retellings -- most notably in "The Godfather Part II" -- but Chase's brand of hard-hitting reality and knack for dialogue would promise something entirely fresh. The show's various jaunts to the home country have provided some of the series' most interesting and visually spectacular scenes, along with giving us the now-fugitive-status Furio.

Time will tell whether this spurs a trip to Los Angeles, but until then, here's to hoping we see some old-fashioned whacking, Ellis Island-style.
