Although "Super 8" hits theaters nationwide tomorrow (or, really, today), several lucky people in Hollywood have already seen director J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's long-awaited collaboration.
The movie had its grand premiere in Los Angeles last evening, drawing the likes of "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof, "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau and more — and based on their responses on Twitter, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.
I'm @roundhoward and this is a special "Super 8" edition of Twitter-Wood for June 9, 2011.

Larry King made history last night by signing off on his last installment of "Larry King Live," but not everyone watching was a huge fan. Actually, there were a few critical grumbles in the feed today, with Greg Grunberg sounding off about Larry, Greg Mottola calling out the MPAA with a disagreement and Damon Lindelof calling out NBC's "The Cape."
Yesterday also brought one of the great accomplishments in trending hashtag use of 2010, however. Patton Oswalt and Jon Hurwitz led the charge their own picks for "Unfairly Maligned Film Characters," and the rest of Twitter just sort of followed along. Check out the whole archive of those posts on Twitter, as well as a couple of my favorites after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for December 17, 2010. Read more...

Greg Grunberg rocks. J.J. Abrams certainly thinks so. The "Heroes" star is the writer/director/producer's good luck charm. He played key roles in "Alias" and "Felicity," was killed off in the pilot episode of "Lost" and had a bit part in "Mission: Impossible III." He also had a voice-only role in "Star Trek," as James Kirk's angry stepdad.
It turns out that Grunberg was originally set for a larger role in "Trek," but other work obligations got in the way. As he said in a recent interview with MTV's Tami Katzoff, "I was doing another film and I couldn’t get out of it to do 'Star Trek.' I was supposed to play Olson, the guy who doesn't pull his chute when they're diving down," he said, referring to a scene near the beginning of the movie. "He's a redshirt so everyone would have known that I was going to die because I die in everything J.J. does, and it would have been so funny! But I couldn’t do it so J.J. had to recast it and I ended up doing the voice of Kirk's dad." Read more...

Whether or not you have an opinion about the general election going on in Great Britain right now, you can surely agree with Nick Frost's position that Gandalf would be make a splendid candidate. I agree with him, at least.
What may be more difficult to agree with, meanwhile, is Frankie Muniz's resemblance to axed "American Idol" contestant Aaron Kelly, though some of his followers see a compelling likeness there. Twitter-Wood is littered with such trivia today, in addition to which Hollywood screenwriter uses the "Super Mario Bros." theme as a ringtone, how Arnold Schwarzenegger spent Cinco de Mayo and which actress finds Gwyneth Paltrow's blog troubling. Check all of those posts out alongside Peter Facinelli's plea for Nashville in Twitter-Wood for May 6, 2010. Read more...

Today's Twitter-Wood came under duress, as TwitPic.com was down for a while, and I wasn't sure where the Twitter Pic of the Day was going to come from. Luckily, everything worked out and I didn't have to make a blind decision. That means I've fully vetted today's shot of John Travolta at the opening for "From Paris With Love," Jason Reitman's view of Oprah's birthday celebration and Jackie Earle Haley's photo opp at Golden Ear Park.
The feed also brought a status update from Kevin Smith on his film "Hit Somebody," which is based on one of my all-time favorite Warren Zevon songs, a few more thoughts on J.D. Salinger's passing and a pre-date dilemma from Diablo Cody. Check it all out and find out who was backstage at the Grammy Awards yesterday in Twitter-Wood for January 29, 2010. Read more...

Warmoth's out, and he stuck me with the Twitter-Wood duties. He was here in the office only a few hours ago. Why didn't I force him to sit down and write it, under penalty of torture?!??!?! I don't have the routine down the way he does, so I hope you'll forgive what is sure to be a lesser TW column. I try my best, but Warmoth's shoes are big ones to fill.
I think I hit the main beats. "Twilight" star Peter Facinelli 'fessed up to being a "Star Trek" fan after a follower called him out for referring to a lousy "Trek" fight from the original series. Also, Mandy Moore proved that she has good taste in music while Dax Shepard and Stephen Fry both made some stunning sociological observations. Plus a very special Twitter Pic of the Day from "Harry Potter" star and "Superbad" fan Tom Felton, who got to hang with Jonah Hill recently. I'm @geminibros and this is your daily update of the goings-on around Twitter-Wood. Read more...

Now this is a dream come true talent roster for geeks everywhere. Marvel is prepping a kid-friendly animated TV series for the Cartoon Network entitled "Super Hero Squad." The cute & cuddly character designs are born of a Hasbro toy line bearing the same name. I somehow doubt that Captain America will be pierced by a sniper's bullet in this series.
Over on MTV Splash Page, Brian Warmoth reports that last week's San Diego Comic-Con brought some serious casting for the series. A veritable smorgasbord of geek culture icons will be joining the voice cast, including George Takei ("Star Trek"), Tricia Helfer ("Battlestar Galactica"), Robert Englund ("Nightmare on Elm Street"), James Marsters ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Greg Grunberg ("Heroes") and Adrian Pasdar ("Heroes"). Oh... and the one and only Luke Skywalker -- Mark Hamill, who will voice Nazi supervillain/severe burn victim Red Skull.
Yes, you read it right: this kids show will feature a Nazi supervillain. Check out the full details in Brian's story over on Splash Page.

Hey all! Welcome to volume 2 of Twitter-Wood. Since Warmoth is a slacker (he's really not; he just had a prior committment), I'm filling in for him this evening. And wouldn't you know it, I almost forgot to deliver. Now who's the slacker? Here I am though, better late than never.
Today's somewhat abbreviated Tweet selection includes some links, some random observations and a near-admission of guilt. I'll let you figure out what all of that means. Sometimes I have a hard time figuring it out myself. Enjoy today's inside look at celebrity ramblings! Oh, and if you really want to follow me too, I can be found at @geminibros. I mostly spew video gaming nonsense though, so beware! Read more...

Newcomers may not realize it, but the "Star Trek" franchise is rife with some truly bizarre casting choices, particularly within the film series. Kirstie Alley, John Larroquette, Alan Ruck, Kim Cattrall, F. Murray Abraham… lots of folks you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see popping up in a sci-fi feature, particularly one with "Trek’s" devoted fanbase.
J.J. Abrams’ just-released "Star Trek" continues on in the same tradition, with a number of the director’s friends and colleagues appearing in various extraneous roles. Read more...
