FROM SPLASH PAGE: It appears that Ryan Reynolds has landed the lead role in the live-action “Green Lantern” movie. After a flurry of rumors, speculation and announcements over the last 24 hours regarding who would star in the film, the “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” actor was named as the star of the Martin Campbell-directed film this evening.
Earlier this morning, it was announced that Reynolds was one of three official contenders for the role alongside “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and musician/actor Justin Timberlake. According to Variety, “the momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.”

FROM SPLASH PAGE: With the "Green Lantern" casting rumors running rampant -- is Chris Pine in, or is he out? -- it's hard to identify a reliable bit of news regarding the developing DC superhero flick. FROM SPLASH PAGE: The "Green Lantern" movie is rolling right along, co-screenwriter Marc Guggenheim tells us -- even if digressions about other comics characters sometimes distract them from the task at hand.
"This morning, we sat down to talk Green Lantern," Guggenheim told MTV, "and we ended up riffing for an hour and a half on another, much more obscure character. Sometimes, you just have to roll with it when inspiration strikes, you know? I'm sure the studio wouldn't be happy about it, but we're not going to blow the deadline. We'll get it in."

As the home of such icons as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, you'd think DC Comics would rule the superhero universe. But no. In fact, rival Marvel Comics is kicking DC's butt. How can this be?
Movies are where the real superhero action is these days, and Marvel, having scored major hits with the current "Iron Man" and "Hulk" films (and with "Thor," "Captain America" and the all-star team-up "Avengers" already in the pipeline), is cleaning up at the box office. Meanwhile, DC and its corporate parent, Warner Bros., haven't quite exploited their own stable of stars -- not just Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, but also the Justice League of which all three of those characters are a part, along with Flash and Green Lantern. Turning these revered comics properties into money-minting movie franchises should have been a no-brainer. If the process has been mishandled, DC's numbers are down, and fanboys are in revolt, what can be done about it? Plenty.
-- Observe Neil Gaiman's "Law of Superhero Movies," which is that "the closer the film is to the look and feel of what people like about the comic, the more successful it is." This, Gaiman says, is "something that Warners tends singularly to miss, and Marvel tends singularly to get right." Warners may prove Gaiman wrong here with the forthcoming "Watchmen." Read more...
