The 2012 Golden Globes have come and gone, and unfortunately, they did little else besides that.

If you asked most people to recount their favorite moments from Sunday's telecast, you'll certainly hear about Seth Rogen's poorly-timed erection or the challenge Madonna extended to Ricky Gervais. (We would have run too.) But aside from one or two memorable surprises, the Golden Globes lived up to their reputation and did little else.

Gervais returned to host the show after his performance at last year's honors stirred the kind of controversy that the historically mild award show desperately need. Predictably, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association wanted Gervais back, but the Ricky we got was far more reserved than what we saw last year.

Let's not pretend that Rickey Gervais was his old, flame-throwing self on Sunday night at the 2012 Golden Globes. He left his scorching commentary, vicious jokes and devil-may-care hilariousness in 2011, and instead delivered a funny performance that left most feathers unruffled, all egos in tact, and many viewers disappointed.

Yet Gervais on a so-so night still makes for an entertaining experience. He called Colin Firth, arguably the nicest man on Earth, a racist puppy puncher. He compared the Globes to Kim Kardashian: loud, trashy, drunk and easily bought. He questioned Justin Bieber's manhood. Good times, all.

While there is always a very party-like atmosphere surrounding the 2012 Golden Globes, celebrities sipping champagne and mingling during commercial breaks, the real festivities begin once the awards show ends and the after-parties begin.

MTV News was lucky enough to be invited to cover some of these events this year, the Weinstein and HBO parties in particular. As you might expect, they are very special invites to have. Watching people try to talk their way in is almost as entertaining as watching all the random celebrity interactions and good-natured schmoozing that occurs inside.

Due to its credibility and frequent number of award-nominated programs and performers, HBO's parties are A-list in every way -- from the venue, to the design, to the food, to the long list of high-caliber attendees. As is to be expected, the casts from the HBO shows were out in full force: Ryan Kwanten, Alexander Skarsgard, Joe Manganiello and Janina Gavankar from "True Blood," Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey from "Game of Thrones," the boys of "Boardwalk Empire," and Globe winner Laura Dern from "Enlightened."

There were plenty more stars to behold in addition to those affiliated with HBO. A few of the fun folks we observed: "Mad Men" stars Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss chatting with Skarsgard; Clive Owen introducing himself to Tim Robbins; Nathan Fillion having an animated conversation/storytelling session with "Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus, "Modern Family" stars Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen, John Stamos and Globe winner Claire Danes; Globe host Ricky Gervais, P. Diddy and a very blonde Lindsay Lohan breezing in at the end with a small entourage in tow. From what we could tell, new friends were made and fun times were had by all.

The 2012 Golden Globe Awards wasn't quite as controversial or lewd as Ricky Gervais' memorable turn as host at last year's show — indeed, this time around, the British comedian's jokes were missing some of that signature sting — but the results were no less interesting for cinephiles keeping a watchful eye on the road towards Oscar.

As many expected, "The Artist" and "The Descendants" were the big winners of the evening, with Best Motion Picture wins for both films as well as Best Actor awards for Jean Dujardin and George Clooney. But there were surprises in the mix as well, including what's surely a universally approved victory for "Hugo" director Martin Scorsese, a screenplay nod for Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and a Best Actress - Comedy award for Michelle Williams.

Now that we're in the aftermath of the Golden Globe nominations and people everywhere are focusing on the snubs and robberies, it's an important time to reflect on the choices we are absolutely in love with.

It's always great to see genre titles make it to the awards shows, which is why we're excited that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's "American Horror Story" has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Drama Series category. The Harmon family and their supernatural roommates are up against several other newcomers including the much-loved "Game of Thrones." Congrats also go out to the sharp-tongued Jessica Lange's Constance Langdon, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Despite all his best efforts, Ricky Gervais claims that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has asked him back to host next year's Golden Globes. It seems as though every year Gervais does everything within his power to host a show that will upset the HPFA, yet when the Globes end up getting great ratings, he is just asked back for more. This year during his hosting gig he directly addressed the fact that he probably wouldn't get asked back, but it looks like the week's worth of coverage following his inflammatory jokes and great ratings convinced the HPFA otherwise.

"Organisers asked me to consider a third year. I don’t think I should," Gervais wrote on his website. "I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure. You know me. Two seasons is enough."

Well, we sure can think of three good reasons why Gervais should come back for a third time, and we hope he takes them to heart. If the HPFA continues to ask for Gervais's abrasive brand of humor, than he should definitely be willing to dish it out! Read more...

There was not shortage of star power at last night's Golden Globe Awards, and MTV News' Josh Horowitz was on the red carpet to chat 'em up, get their thoughts on the night... and probe them for scoop on their upcoming projects.

Robert Pattinson was on hand and feeling very chatty, talking about landing the lead role in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," taking a "big step" forward with the adaptation of "Water for Elephants" and giving "Twilight" fans a thrill with that revealing new "Breaking Dawn" photo.

Meanwhile, Zac Efron talked about his new haircut, his role in the upcoming flick "The Lucky Ones," and starring opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in the ensemble romantic comedy "New Year's Eve." Emma Stone dished on the "Spider-Man" reboot and the mechanical contraptions Spidey will use to sling his webs. And Olivia Wilde revealed that she was hiding Justin Bieber underneath her dress (sadly, when we checked, we discovered she was joking). Read more...
