Though he stars as Duke in this summer’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, Channing Tatum chatted with MTV News about how which other “Joe” role was his first choice and what it’s like working on such a major blockbuster.
“I wanted to play Snake Eyes,” laughed Tatum, who was promoting his upcoming film “Fighting.” “I wanted so badly to play Snake Eyes.”
That’s the role that, ultimately, went to Ray Park, but Tatum says that Snake Eyes remains the coolest of the Joes simply because he never says word, a demand that the film’s creative consultant (and writer of the 80’s Marvel “Joe” comics) Larry Hama demanded resolutely. Read more...
G.I. Joe's arch-nemesis Cobra Commander appears to be getting a facemask overhaul for the Real American Heroes' August release of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." Last month, the team's PIT Mobile Headquarters from the movie toy line revealed a few details about the film.
Now, pictures of a G.I. Joe Movie Cobra Commander toy figure potentially offer the first look at what the villain being played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt will look like, while the back of the toy's packaging could contain a few spoilers regarding the character's origin in the film. Read on for details... and quite a few POTENTIAL SPOILERS! Read more...
Well, I have to admit I didn't see this one coming. Long-time fans of the "G.I. Joe" comics are familiar with multiple version of the G.I. Joe's base known as "The Pit." While the locations changed -- from underneath a chaplain's school to a multi-story bunker in the Utah desert -- the fundemental idea and structure of their headquarters remained the same...an underground fortress.
Bearing that in mind, I've been curious to see how director Stephen Sommers planned on tackling the Joe lair. I had naturally assumed it would follow the same format. I assumed wrong.

The classic "Pit" has gone mobile; it's now a giant vehicle ringed with turrets and presumably a huge interior cabin. Read more...
So now we've seen the first footage of "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra," and reaction in fandom circles has been decidedly mixed. And while I admit to being slightly thrown off by the plethora of skin-tight black outfits, there are a number of reasons why director Stephen Sommers' take on the iconic 1980's toy line may be worth standing in line for. And just so you know where I'm coming from, along with possessing over a hundred action figures, I own every "G.I. Joe" comic ever printed, including "Special Missions," "Yearbooks," the 3-D one-offs and the European printings of "Action Force." So yeah, I'm legit. But back to the film...
First and foremost, "Rise of Cobra" relies on Larry Hama's classic 155-issue comic book run as its source material, rather than the considerably more childish television show. Not only that, but Hama himself was hired as a consultant. As such, key relationships from the comic -- such as the link between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow -- are carried over, and important details like Snake-Eyes staying silent are left intact. Having spoken to Hama, the godfather of "Joe" has an intense enthusiasm for the project and swears on its faithfulness, and as the man who single-handedly crafted my childhood, I take him at his word. So what do you think? The characters are all there. Sienna Miller is a sultry baroness. That's for sure. But what about Channing Tatum as Duke? Dennis Quaid as Hawk? Christopher Eccleston as Destro? Clearly the action is big (the poor Eiffel Tower...) and yes, Snake Eyes does a cool flip or two but what's your sense of the story? Can this possibly deliver the live-action Joe adventure we've all craved for so long?
Don't hold back. Tell us what you think.

You’ve seen the photos, heard the rumors, and even had your eardrums blown out by one star’s unparalleled sense of excitement. But the question remains: Is next summer’s “G.I. Joe” movie going to be as awesome as Michael Bay’s “Transformers,” or as laughable as Dolph Lundgren’s “Masters of the Universe”?
“We are in post-production, and it’s looking really good,” promised super-producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently, marveling over some of the early “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” scenes he’s been working on recently with director Stephen Sommers. “It’s going to be really fun, and it’s going to be big.”
The cast alone would seem to back up di Bonaventura’s boasts, with such names as Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller and others. When MTV visited the set awhile back, it was as if the soldier-stuffed toyboxes we all had as children had grown 20 times their size and been handed over to Sommers. All that remains now is to see if his plotlines are as exciting as the ones we dreamed up in our backyards all those years ago. Read more...
While most of the cast of "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" has already been revealed in all their costumed glory, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's take on the fanatical Cobra Commander is one that's remained firmly mysterious. Now thanks to a new chat with the actor, we've managed to learn just a little more of what to expect when the film hits theaters in August 2009.
With a number of iconic costumes in his wardrobe, the look of the character has been first and foremost on the minds of fans. Gordon-Levitt confirmed to MTV News back in April that he does wear a mask, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told us recently that it wouldn't be the classic hood. But while we've been busy speculating over what's covering his face, would you believe it's what's underneath that might be most surprising?
"The cool thing about my character was that it's not that digital," exclaimed Gordon-Levitt, revealing that he underwent significant changes to adapt to the role. "I get to put hours of prosthetic makeup on and see a different creature altogether. I've seen how he looks and it's really cool." Read more...
We know Joseph Gordon-Levitt is excited for his role as Cobra Commander in "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra," but just what exactly can we expect from his take on the iconic character? While viewers of the cartoon know the figure as a more whimsical evildoer, fans of the comic -- used to a bombastic terrorist who entombed his own son -- are feverishly hoping their version of the Cobra leader is the one that makes it on-screen. Thankfully, it sounds like they'll get their wish.
"As we see it, he's a very twisted character," producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura exclaimed to MTV News, telling us the key to Cobra Commander lies in his gritty past...and that we'll see every grimy piece of it. "As the backstory evolves, you discover why his personality [is like that]."
While stopping short of drawing parallels between Gordon-Levitt's PG-13 villain and that of Heath Ledger's terrifying Joker, di Bonaventura does find one noteworthy comparison. "I thought what was great in 'The Dark Knight' was that Heath kept telling you different stories [about his past] so you never knew what it was, and they were all spooky and crazy. [In our film] you get to see it, and you get to understand what's happened to this guy." Read more...
He’s one of fandom’s most celebrated characters, an honor-bound warrior upholding the virtues of an earlier time. And for a moment, he nearly sold his principals down the river simply to get a movie deal.
But thankfully Snake-Eyes, the black-clad, silent warrior of “G.I. Joe” averted a scandal that may have rocked the Internet community to its knees. And all thanks to one very protective father.
“We actually had Snake-Eyes utter one sentence at the very end of the movie,” revealed Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the upcoming mega-budget “G.I. Joe” adaptation. “We thought [it] was very clever…Larry didn’t think it was clever at all.” Read more...
