Ladies and gentlemen, it was no fluke.
When the first trailer for "G.I. Joe: Retaliaton" hit the web, I felt deceived by the director, Jon M. Chu. He had not told me how badass the sequel to Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" could possibly be until he released that first trailer. It was quite a shock.
Having eventually recovered, I was much more prepared for the thirty-second Super Bowl ad for the upcoming sequel. I expected ninja sword fights on a vertical rock face. Bruce Willis' terse, machine gun-toting Original Joe wouldn't bring me to tears. Those things could not surprise me.
Then I saw Snake-Eyes' exploding motorcycle.

The hunt for Gale and Peeta is over. After weeks of speculation, Lionsgate has announced that Liam Hemsworth ("The Last Song") and Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right") are heading for the big screen version of Suzanne Collins' insanely addictive series "The Hunger Games" to play male leads Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark respectively, reports Hollywood Crush.
Hemsworth and Hutcherson join Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who was chosen to play "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss Everdeen last month. Both actors expressed interest in the highly anticipated project, which will be directed by Gary Ross. Hutcherson disclosed his feelings on the character, saying: "The character is so much who I am — self deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play!"
Meanwhile, back in January, Hemsworth had hinted to MTV that he could very well be taking on the role of the stoic, first true love of Katniss, Gale. While Hemsworth had not met with Ross at the time, he confirmed he did read the script and told us, "[It's] a really, really cool story," adding, "[It's] super dark. It's all young kids in these Hunger Games, which are crazy, insane things."

"Never Say Never" director Jon Chu is in negotiations to direct "G.I. Joe 2," and that's not the only controversial move that Paramount's making for the developing sequel.
Last week, actress Rachel Nichols revealed that only three Joes — Duke (Channing Tatum), Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) — are reprising their roles for the sequel. That's right, the erstwhile Scarlett is seemingly out of the picture, with Heavy Duty and the rest of the Joes' fates hanging in the balance as well.
Some fans are likely furious about the apparent absence of their favorite Joes from the sequel. Personally, I'd like to see some returning faces as well. But if there's one thing that the "G.I. Joe" franchise has, it's a deep catalogue of characters. Even without Scarlett and the gang, there's no shortage of heroes the sequel could recruit into its fold.
After the jump, check out the "G.I. Joe" characters we're eager to see in the sequel!

-- Robert Englund doesn't need Freddy Krueger. He's got an all-new demonic franchise to call his own in the form of "Inkubus," an independent horror movie about a demon that walks into a police station and confesses to several crimes, all while holding a severed head. Perfect. [Variety]
-- James Gandolfini is on his way back to HBO, but he won't be returning to his mafia roots. Instead, he'll produce and possibly star in single-camera comedy series "Taxi-22" based on a French Canadian comedy about an inappropriate cab driver. [Deadline]
-- Elizabeth Perkins is no longer rocking the ganja, as the "Weeds" actress is leaving the Showtime series in favor of a big screen role in "I Hop," a live-action/CG-animated hybrid comedy. [The Hollywood Reporter] Read more...

The Real American Heroes are on their way back. But almost nothing is known about the sequel to last summer's $300-plus million grossing "G.I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" other than the names of the writers penning the script: Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland"). In a far-ranging conversation with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, MTV News set out to shed a little light on the upcoming flick.
MTV: Have Reese and Wernick delivered a script yet?
Lorenzo di Bonaventura: We're not that far. I think it'll be pretty soon. It'll need a lot of work. They all do. I've had an occasion to read some of their pages, so I know the quality is there and the sense of tone is there. Paramount is very excited about us getting it going. No dates have been set. In our heads we think 2012 — that summer. Read more...

Nearly two years after would-be blockbuster “Earth vs. Moon” was snatched up following a bidding war between four studios, the writers of the red-hot script have become even hotter. But, now that they’re better known as the creators of “Zombieland” and have sequels in the works to that film, “G.I. Joe” and “X-Men” character Deadpool, where does that leave the sci-fi epic – and their hopes to someday film it with Will Smith?
“’Earth vs. Moon’ is in the background,” explained writer Rhett Reese, when we interviewed him along with partner Paul Wernick and asked for an update on the long-simmering project. “We’ve written a first draft. We’ll be writing a second draft at some point.” Read more...

As a “G.I. Joe” nut, I was intrigued by the long-simmering rumors that Brendan Fraser was going to pop up for a cameo in the “Rise of Cobra” film as macho Marine Gung-Ho. Sure enough, the movie comes along, but the “Mummy” star instead seemed to be some generic drill sergeant who trained the other Joes in hand-to-hand combat. So I couldn’t help but wonder: Who is he supposed to be?
The interesting thing is this: Fraser has no idea, either.
“I want to say that I know the answer to that,” the star said with a laugh when we caught up with him recently. “Who exactly was I? I did not know until I saw the credit crawl when I saw the movie!” Read more...

Well isn't this exciting. "Zombieland" was one of the better movies to come out last year, right? Well the writers of that movie, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are some busy guys now. It was only a few months ago they were joking (half-joking) with us about landing Will Smith to star in their original sci-fi project, "Earth Vs. Moon." Now all of a sudden they're scripting the "Deadpool" movie.
And it only gets better. Yesterday, Collider reported via an anonymous source that a writer, some writer, had been hired to pen the "G.I. Joe" sequel. Now they've got another source, "a great source," saying that Reese and Wernick are doing the sequel. Read more...

Even if "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" wasn't universally embraced by longtime fans of the cartoon, comic book and action figure franchise, those very fans at least had the earlier release of "G.I. Joe: Resolute" — an animated movie written by Warren Ellis — to latch onto.
In fact, the idea of a sequel to "Resolute" is probably more exciting to a lot of fans than a sequel to "Rise of Cobra." While details are still unclear regarding further installments of both projects, it appears that some sort of new animated adventure is in the works for the "G.I. Joe" series. Read more...

Though he stars as Duke in this summer’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, Channing Tatum chatted with MTV News about how which other “Joe” role was his first choice and what it’s like working on such a major blockbuster.
“I wanted to play Snake Eyes,” laughed Tatum, who was promoting his upcoming film “Fighting.” “I wanted so badly to play Snake Eyes.”
That’s the role that, ultimately, went to Ray Park, but Tatum says that Snake Eyes remains the coolest of the Joes simply because he never says word, a demand that the film’s creative consultant (and writer of the 80’s Marvel “Joe” comics) Larry Hama demanded resolutely. Read more...
