If you've been reading this blog for some amount of time, then you've probably read my raving excitement for "Ghostbusters III." I've been following the development of this long-awaited sequel very closely. "The Office" writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky ("Year One") have a script due in May for the 2011 release, the original 'Busters are said to be returning and Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two movies, will be back to direct the third. Or so we thought.

Apparently, Sony would like to pull a "Spider-Man" with "Ghostbusters," bringing in a young, hip director to -- you guessed it -- reboot the franchise for a new generation, Vulture reports. It's common knowledge that the plan has been to have the focus of the coming sequel be on a sort of "new class" of 'Busters, with the original guys -- Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson -- on hand to pass their torch along. So the real surprise here is the Reitman hesitation. A few weeks ago, "Ghostbusters" writer and star Harold Ramis revealed that the long-awaited third movie in the series is planned for a 2011 release. This news broke only a short time after "Avatar" star Sigourney Weaver speculated that Bill Murray's character Pete Venkman might appear in the movie as a slimer ghost, and that Oscar, her character's son from the second movie, would be a full-fledged Ghostbuster.

Ivan Reitman, director and producer of the first two movies, stopped to chat with MTV's Josh Horowitz last night on the National Board of Review red carpet in New York City. He shied away from addressing Weaver's spoiler-y speculation, but he did have some things to say about the general state of development for "Ghostbusters III."

Reitman said that the script from "Year One" writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is in and that a second draft is currently in the works. He also confirmed that he will indeed be returning to direct the coming sequel, as had been previously speculated. Read more...

Do you remember when MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to "Avatar" star Sigourney Weaver a few weeks ago about "Ghostbusters III"? She talked about star Bill Murray coming back as a ghost, perhaps even a Slimer, and her in-movie son Oscar playing a now-grown-up Ghostbuster. Here... see for yourself:

Well Weaver's spoiler-rich speculation may be what prompted Egon actor and writer of the first two films Harold Ramis to say a little bit about when we might be seeing the gang strap on their unlicensed nuclear accelerators once again. Read more...

It was as if she fired off a positively charged stream of proton-packed gossip into the blogosphere: "Ghostbusters" star Sigourney Weaver recently let slip during a press conference that in the upcoming third franchise installment Bill Murray might play a ghost, and that her son Oscar from "Ghostbuster 2" might work for the family business in the coming sequel. Here's what she had to say when MTV's Josh Horowitz caught up with her at the "Avatar" junket in London...

Tantalizing stuff, right? I mean seriously... will Bill Murray really be a ghost? Read more...
