Ridley Scott could soon become a very busy man. In addition to developing a sequel to "Blade Runner," the "Prometheus" director is eying two other big budget projects that he could potentially helm over the next year.
The first film on his docket is a biopic about Gertrude Bell appropriately titled "Gertrude Bell." The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Angelina Jolie is poised to star in the film, though the deal hasn't been finalized yet. It would be her first live action film since 2010's "The Tourist," and would align with her own interest in international policy.
Also on Scott's list of potential projects is a movie that could star Gerard Butler.

As we could tell from the trailer, Marc Forster's "Machine Gun Preacher" isn't one of those overwrought, melodramatic, "based on a true story," feel good films. According to stars Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan, what sets it apart from the pack is the fact that it is about a flawed hero who finds his true calling through a violent, intense, and inspiring journey.
"This isn’t a story you hear every single day," Monaghan told MTV news. "He’s sort of a hero but a flawed hero, and that’s exactly what the title entails. As you read the story you realize the journey this man has been on."

Gerard Butler is returning to the good side of the law in Millennium Films' latest acquisition, "The Bricklayer."
The Hollywood Reporter has the news that the "Law Abiding Citizen" star has been brought on board to play former FBI agent Noah Boyd in the book adaptation. Boyd is working as a Chicago bricklayer when he is called in to stop a criminal organization demanding multimillion-dollar ransom payments. "Enigma" scribe Hanna Weg is writing the screenplay.

"Machine Gun Preacher." That's a helluva title, isn't it? It's an upcoming "based on truth" story directed by Marc Forster and starring Gerard Butler. The actor told MTV contributor Ryan Downey all about the planned 2012 release when the two chatted last week at the press junket for "How To Train Your Dragon," which hits theaters tomorrow.
"It's an incredible story," he said. He's right too-- it's pretty wacky. Hit the jump for Butler's lengthy explanation. Read more...

Last week, an odd-yet-exciting bit of news emerged that Peter Farrelly and longtime collaborator Charles Wessler are pulling together a sketch comedy movie in the vein of classics like "Kentucky Fried Movie." The news in and of itself qualifies as "interesting," but it amps up quite a bit when you look at the confirmed cast and oddball lineup of sketch directors. I won't list them all here -- click the link above for that -- but rest assured, it is massive.
One of the names on that list is Gerard Butler. I mention him specifically not just because we talked to him, but also because he went into great detail on how he fits into the untitled ensemble.
"I play the most perverse, disturbing, disgusting, foul-mouthed leprechaun you could ever imagine," he said. But wait... it actually gets even better. Read more...

I might be biased about this news. Any press release that mentions "Kentucky Fried Movie" has me instantly sold. Said release popped into my e-mail yesterday from Relativity Media. They're working with Peter Farrelly, frequent Farrelly co-conspirator Charles Wessler and GreeneStreet Films on an "Untitled Comedy" -- wouldn't it be great if they kept that title? -- which is described as "a unifying storyline for a series of sketch comedies in the vein of the 1970s hits 'Kentucky Fried Movie' and 'Groove Tube.'"
They forgot "Amazon Women on the Moon," which for my money is the best of that bunch. No matter. The news here is that the cast is massive and the behind-the-lens talent -- some of whom have already completed their work -- is equally massive. Find the full list (so far) after the jump. Read more...

Given the amount of plugs, if you found yourself watching the Golden Globes on Sunday then you'd know that host Ricky Gervais' comedy "The Invention of Lying" was coming to home video today. The film places Gervais in an alternate reality where everyone always tells the truth, giving him a considerable edge when he becomes the first person in the world "invent" the concept of fibbing. The rom-com comes to DVD and Blu-ray with a few extras including a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and a mini-doc following Karl Pilkington from Gervais' wildly popular podcast series. It's rather odd that a commentary track isn't one of the extras; you'd think it'd be a natural addition given Gervais also co-wrote the pic. But alas...
On the action side, we have Gerard Butler's "Gamer," which is basically a cross between "Gladiator" and "The Running Man." The film takes place in a dystopian future where nerds control beefy human avatars in a massively multiplayer online game. The film performed modestly at the box office, and comes to DVD and Blu-ray with a considerable amount of extras. Those include a feature-length commentary track, a three-part behind-the-scenes doc about the making of the film, and an interesting (for tech hounds) look at the groundbreaking digital RedOne camera used for the flick. Wasn’t “The Soloist” hilarious? Remember all those crazy scenes of Robert Downey Jr. spilling urine on himself, and Jamie Foxx acting like he might be insane? Ah, good times, good times.
Oh wait, “Soloist” was a drama? Well, now that you mention it, maybe I shouldn’t have been laughing so much. Either way, the good news is that Foxx and Downey Jr. are reuniting for a real comedy from the director of “The Hangover.” And this time, I’m pretty sure it’ll be okay to laugh.
“Yeah, it’s called ‘Due Date,’” Jamie Foxx said of the film, issuing some high praise for director Todd Phillips, who also made “Old School” a frat-house classic. “He is the funniest guy in the world.” Read more...

After last Friday's "cheese stands alone" release of "Couples Retreat," we're back this Friday with a range of options for moviegoers of all shapes and sizes. The big one of course is director Spike Jonze' adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are." I can't really say that it's a kids movie, but anyone who holds their childhood memories of the book close will feel some strong nostalgia for Jonze' interpretation. It's weird and beautiful and oddly aimless; this is as perfect a pairing of director and source as there's ever been.
Next up is director F. Gary Gray's thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. Butler plays a family man whose life is torn away from him after his wife and kids are murdered. Ten years after the tragic incident, the widow seeks revenge on the assistant district attorney (Foxx) who allowed the killers to go free. All from the confines of a jail cell. Did I mention that Butler's character is an inventor by trade? Read more...

I don't care that "Gamer" is coming out at the tail end of the summer. It's no footnote. As a longtime fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic "The Running Man," this feels like a spiritual successor wired for a new generation. The manhunt game show is replaced by a manhunt video game and Richard Dawson gets the boot in favor of Michael C. Hall, who can chew scenery with the best of 'em. Let's also not forget "300" star Gerard Butler; he's no Ahnuld (who is?), but he's definitely got his macho action routine on lockdown.
Check out our exclusive "Gamer" TV spot below for a taste of the relentless action.
