Haters, get ready to hate: I believe it's time for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise to sail firmly into Geoffrey Rush's hands.

No disrespect intended towards Captain Jack Sparrow whatsoever — I love the character to pieces and imagine that we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the coming years — but I'm equally enamored with Rush's comparatively underrated Barbossa, and I think we're at the point where the formerly dead pirate needs to get his hands on the franchise. I'll give you five reasons why after the jump.

If there's one thing we haven't forgotten, mates, it's that Johnny Depp is Captain Jack Sparrow. But just in case you need a reminder of who this pesky pirate is and what he's capable of, he's more than happy to give you a show.

Yahoo premiered this first official clip from "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," sailing into theaters on May 20, just a few short weeks away now. It's been four years since Captain Jack last traveled through cinematic waters, but as you can see, he hasn't slowed down one bit.

The King's SpeechWith "The King's Speech" pulling ahead in the Oscar race, Harvey Weinstein may be even more anxious to have the film re-edited to reach a wider audience.

Last week it was reported by the Los Angeles Times that Weinstein, whose Oscar-friendly studio The Weinstein Co. released the film, wanted to find a way to trim an intricate scene of the currently R-rated movie in which King George VI (Colin Firth) lets a string of expletives fly under the instruction of his speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush).

Weinstein argued that the success of the film in Great Britain was due to a lower rating, as he told the LA Times, "The British numbers are huge because the rating lets families see the movie together,” he said, adding, “[Director] Tom (Hooper) and I are trying to find a unique way to do this that keeps his vision of the movie.”

But, it seems Hooper may have no intention of changing his vision after all. Hooper, who bested "The Social Network" director David Fincher in an upset win at the Director's Guild of America Awards on Saturday (January 29), spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the possible re-cut.

"I wouldn’t support cutting the film in any way. I think we looked at whether it’s possible to bleep out the f—s and stuff, but I’m not going to actually cut that part," Hooper said of the scene in contention. Read More...

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger TidesWe're still about four months away from "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" sailing into theaters, but that hasn't stopped Disney from setting the wheels in motion for a fifth installment in the swashbuckling franchise.

Earlier this week, Johnny Depp told Entertainment Weekly that he's already had discussions about returning to the role of rum-loving, adventure-seeking Captain Jack Sparrow for a fifth go-around. "As long as we can put all the puzzle pieces together, I would most definitely consider it," he told the magazine.

Well, today Disney started trying to put the puzzle pieces together. According to Deadline, the studio has hired scribe Terry Rossio to write the script for "Pirates of the Caribbean 5."

The Social NetworkThe National Society of Film Critics announced their winners from the past year's crop of films and, as has been the trend with recent awards shows, "The Social Network" took top honors, winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay with room to spare. Jesse Eisenberg also won as Best Actor, but was neck-in-neck with Colin Firth of "The King's Speech" for the victory.

There were a few surprise wins, however. Olivia Williams won Best Actress In A Supporting Role for her performance in "The Ghost Writer," beating both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo for their roles in "The Fighter." And the NSFC awarded Giovanna Mezzogiomo Best Actress for her performance in the Italian drama "Vincere," beating out Annette Bening in "The Kids Are All Right" and Lesley Manville in "Another Year." Pirates of the CaribbeanWalt Disney Pictures announced today that it'll be giving Jack Sparrow fans quite the festive gift this holiday season: the first trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

The trailer will debut online at 1 p.m. PST (4 p.m. ET) on Monday, December 13, and will also run ahead of Disney's "Tron: Legacy" when that 3-D flick hits theaters on Friday, December 17.

Johnny Depp reprises his iconic role as adventure-seeking, perennially tipsy pirate Jack Sparrow in "On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment in the swashbuckling, blockbustering franchise and the first to be directed by Rob Marshall. It's also the first film in the series that doesn't co-star Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. But not to worry -- a couple of new additions should ease the pain of those losses. Read More...

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides teaser posterDisney has released the teaser poster for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and it certainly is a tease -- so much so that the name of the film doesn't even appear on the image. Neither does the name or visage of the movie's bankable star, one Johnny Depp, a.k.a. Captain Jack Sparrow, for that matter. In fact, the only writing on the poster is the film's May 20 release date and a subscript alerting moviegoers to the fact that Capt. Jack's fourth big-screen voyage will be in both IMAX and eye-patch-popping 3-D.

To be fair, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise is so well-known at this point that one look at the image is all it takes to know what it's promoting. And one could argue that the skull on the poster is Depp's face, minus the devious smile and the flesh, of course. Either way, we're sure this is just the first of 73 character posters, bus wraps and billboards the studio will be releasing in the push up to the movie's 2011 release -- so there will be plenty o' time to get Depp's smirking face out there. Take a gander at the poster after the full poster below. Read More...

Keith RichardsJohnny Depp has always credited Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards as one of the prime inspirations for his iconic "Pirates of the Caribbean" alter-ego Captain Jack Sparrow. So it was only fitting that Richards played Sparrow's father, Captain Teague, in 2007's "At World's End." And now, the rumors that Richards would reprise that role in the series' fourth chapter, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," have been confirmed.

The news that Depp and Richards "are currently shooting the series' fourth installment, where Richards reprises his role as Sparrow's father" is nonchalantly mentioned in a Reuters article about the musician's upcoming autobiography "Life," which apparently lays down a whole lotta smack about Richards' Rolling Stones band mate Mick Jagger. The past 24 hours -- really, 12 hours -- have brought with them a rash of everyone-knew-it-was-coming breaking news. Let's start with the most nuclear bit: "Breaking Dawn," the final chapter in Stephenie Meyer's "Twlight" series, will be split into two movies. The first one is still set for a November 2011 release and the follow-up will arrive at a still-unspecified date.

It has long been rumored that the split would happen. Cast member have even explicitly address the possibility, and on numerous occasions. For many Twilighters, it was a foregone conclusion that "Breaking Dawn" would be split. And so the news should come as no surprise to anyone.

But wait! There's more! Read More...

It's been quite a ride for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" since it was first announced last September. First there was concern over whether star Johnny Depp would return following Dick Cook's departure from Disney. Then a few story details emerged, a director was confirmed and new stars were confirmed while old ones stepped away.

Speaking to producer Jerry Bruckheimer at ShoWest in Las Vegas last week, MTV's Larry Carroll learned a bit more about these new characters.

"We have a new villain, Blackbeard, who's the nastiest pirate ever. That's Ian McShane," Bruckheimer said. McShane is perhaps most memorable for his role on HBO's "Deadwood" as the sometimes-villainous/sometimes-benevolent but always self-serving bar/brothel owner Al Swearengen. "And a little romance between Captain Jack and the character Penelope plays," the producer continued. "There's a lot of humor, she brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she's so feisty. She plays the daughter of Blackbeard." Read More...
