Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman's Oscar nomination has been a long time coming, so excuse the Englishman for getting a little cast crazy in the post-ceremony celebration.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oldman is entering final negotiations to play the villain of "Motor City," a movie about "a small-time hood who is framed and sent to prison, only to exact revenge years later to get back the woman he loves." Directed by Albert Hughes, who previously helmed "The Book of Eli" and "From Hell," it will look to start shooting in April.

Oldman Tinker

Well, we finally know who will be competing for Oscar gold come Feburary 26, and with everyone everywhere talking about this year's nominees, a lot of people are ticked off.

So much of the post-nomination Oscar conversation gets swallowed up by the angry cries of snubs and shutouts. While we're just as mad about some of the nominations as you are (No Albert Brooks? No "50/50"? "Extremely Loud"?), there are plenty of nominations that came as pleasant surprises and have us really looking forward to Oscar night.

Here is the list of our favorite nominations.

Oldman

For his role in "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy," Gary Oldman is getting a lot of buzz as a potential Oscar nominee. It would be his first, if you can believe it. He’s popped up in so many memorable roles over the years, but he’s never received any adulation from the Academy.

In anticipation of the hopeful good news, we came up with a list of five other actors who’ve never gotten the call either.

Taking on the role of John le Carré's master spy, George Smiley, involves navigating two enormous obstacles. First, the legendary Alec Guinness claimed the character for himself in the beloved BBC miniseries of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" from 1979. Second, outside the more descriptive world of the novels, Smiley is a mystery, a silent, poker-faced old pro who knows the spy game too well to betray his thoughts or emotions, if he has any at all.

But Gary Oldman has proved he is up to the task. His performance in the new film adaptation of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" received universal praise from critics as one of his finest and one on par with Guinness'. Oldman opened up to MTV News about playing Smiley and the satisfaction the part gave him.

For every list of movie award nominations, there will probably be an almost equally long list of snubs. Unsurprisingly, this year's Golden Globe nominations missed some of the year's best work, but some of the snubs were just too big to ignore.

To right some of the wrongs, we picked our five most unforgivable oversights from the Golden Globe nominations.

Spies have had it bad as of late. If they aren't the hollow centers of this week's generic action movie, they're one half of an on-screen couple in a shallow quadrant-hitting action comedy. James Bond may be the only redeeming representative left from the shadowy profession, and even he can err on the side of dumb on a bad day.

Just when it seems like the glory days of shadowy figures in trench coats, listening in on tapped phone conversations are long gone, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" comes along. It's a slow, nuanced and complicated film that most people wouldn't classify as a thriller, but don't let that fool you. Gary Oldman and his legion of brilliant supporting British actors, along with the Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, have crafted a brilliant, suspense-filled tale worthy of your money and attention.

Here are five reasons to check out "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks isn't scared to tackle some of history's biggest and most tragic events. His next film, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," takes place during the aftermath of September 11, and now he has plans to tackle a movie about the Holocaust.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Hanks and his producing partner are planning to bring Erik Larson's non-fiction novel "In the Garden of the Beasts" to the big screen for Universal. It follows an American professor and his daughter who travel to Berlin in Hitler's first year of power, 1933, and try to temper the Fuhrer-to-be's government. Apparently the book offers a good understanding of why it took the world so long to understand the threat posed by Hitler. Hanks could potentially star in the film, as well as produce it.

You know what movie profession is in need of serious comeback? The spy. Not the "all flash and explosions of James Bond" spy, but the "shadowy guy on the street corner" spy. It's been too long since we've celebrated the clandestine charm of old-fashioned intelligence agents. It's time we bring them back.

Thankfully, we're in luck. "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is just the movie to do it. The film, which touts an all-British cast of ridiculously high caliber led by Gary Oldman, doesn't hit theaters until December 9, but we have three exclusive clips from the movie.

Kittens Gonna KitKit Harrington and Joel Kinnaman are eyeing a trip to Camelot.

Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyIn recent years, we've learned better than to judge a movie by its trailer. But "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is sure challenging that ideal.

A second trailer has hit the web courtesy of MSN, and on the surface the Cold War-set espionage thriller certainly looks flawless. The movie won us over once it announced that its leads included Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Ciaran Hinds, but this look at "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" also shows that it's going to be putting the ensemble of actors to good use.

Check it out past the jump!
