Star WarsThe "Star Wars" films that hit Blu-ray on September 16 aren’t going to be the same movies you grew up with.

Like the previous special editions director George Lucas has released, the Blu-ray releases will be tinkered with and updated to the director's liking. The Digital Bits says that most of it is small stuff that is for the better, like remedied color timing (the lightsabers now look a lot better) and edited out mistakes (say goodbye to the puppeteer's arm on the Wampa on "Empire Strikes Back").

The biggest change to the movies, however, is the switch from the puppet Yoda in "The Phantom Menace" to a new digital one that will be consistent with "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith." As to whether there will be any more changes to the films, well, we'll have to wait until the release to find out if Lucas left in other surprises.

Check out the rest of today's film news after the jump!

FrankensteinWe've done vampires, we've done werewolves and we've done zombies, so apparently what the world needs now is a healthy dose of "Frankenstein" projects. Back in early December we learned that Sony was planning on a contemporary retelling of the classic horror story, and we speculated what other monster tales could use modern reboot. But, looking back, we honestly should have known better. Of course studios aren't going to move on to a new story until we've been inundated with Frankenstein-related projects!

Enter Summit Entertainment's purchase of the upcoming young adult novel "This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein." And if you thought that Sony's version of "Frankenstein" would be going after the "Twilight" crowd, wait until you hear how hard Summit is trying. Following the trend of purchasing YA novels that seem like they'll be popular before they're actually released, Deadline is reporting that "Twilight" producer Karen Rosenfelt is backing the adaptation of the Kenneth Oppel novel.

And guess what: it even has a love triangle! Read More...

FrankensteinFirst we got a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" set in high class Manhattan in "Beastly," then we got a gothic twist on "Red Riding Hood" thanks to "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke, and now Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is about to get a modernized reboot.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has purchased the rights to "Frankenstein" and plans for "From Prada to Nada" writer Craig Fernandez to pen a contemporary version of the classic horror story. Considering Fernandez's "From Prada to Nada" is a modern retelling of "Sense and Sensibility" with a Latin spin, he might be the right guy for the job.

With Hollywood so hell-bent on taking these classic horror stories and making them young, hip and sexy, we figured we'd offer up a few of our own suggestions on some films we'd like to see get — for lack of a better phrase — the "Twilight" treatment. Who knows, maybe you'll have some hunky Frankenstein hanging on a poster over your bed next year? Read More...

In the weeks prior, Guillermo del Toro had promised a big announcement for San Diego Comic-Con. He didn't disappoint: "Haunted Mansion" is getting a remake, and it's going to be del Toro-ified. Still, the guy has a ton of other projects that fans are curious about. MTV's Josh Horowitz asked him about two in particular when they sat down for a chat during the 'Con: "Frankenstein" and "Van Helsing."

"Frankenstein-- in the next few weeks we are doing a very, very thorough makeup test on Doug Jones. And we're gonna film it," del Toro said. Jones, of course, is the longtime collaborator who is perhaps best known for wearing the Abe Sapien suit in "Hellboy" and the Pale Man & Pan suits in "Pan's Labyrinth." Read More...

Guillermo Del ToroGuillermo del Toro has left "The Hobbit." After several years of development and unexpected delays stemming from MGM's frequently reported hardships, the "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker has parted ways with Middle-Earth to pursue other projects. Indeed, del Toro has no shortage of developing movies on the horizon, something that was already a clear obstacle before the filmmaker fled the director's chair on "The Hobbit."

After the jump, check out a sampling of some of the many projects that del Toro has in the pipeline. Read More...

When it comes to 19th century literary monsters, Bram Stoker's Dracula seems the bigger inspiration on modern Gothic tales thanks to the current vampire craze, but the creature from Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is definitely the more relevant to the 21st century, as long as man continues pursuits towards human perfection.

Cashing in on this potential are "X-Men" franchise producer Ralph Winter and Terry Botwick ("Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie"), who are adapting Dean Koontz's ongoing series of "Frankenstein" novels, according to Variety. In the series, which continues this May with the release of a fourth book, Koontz updates and re-imagines Shelley's classic novel for present-day, New Orleans-set stories focused on two detectives working cases involving synthetic biological super-humans. Doug JonesA couple weeks ago, I posted about Guillermo del Toro making some comments on two of his upcoming projects, "The Hobbit" and "Frankenstein." Specifically, he commented on the participation of one Doug Jones, a frequent del Toro collaborator. He was the body of Abe Sapien in both "Hellboy" flicks (to David Hyde Pierce's voice), Pan in "Pan's Labyrinth" and a mutant cockroach-thing in "Mimic."

In the older interview, del Toro revealed that Jones will play some unrevealed part in "The Hobbit," prequel to Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and the title role of the monster in the director's down-the-road adaptation of "Frankenstein." Sci Fi Wire cornered Jones this past weekend, when he appeared at the Wizard's World Philadelphia convention. The actor was happy to clarify some of del Toro's revelations from his own perspective. Guillermo del ToroGuillermo del Toro hinted at all sorts of goodies when he visited the MTV offices last week. He didn't crack open the vaults in a stunning tell-all, but he did reveal that he's narrowed down his casting choice for "The Hobbit"'s Bilbo Baggins to one actor.

Oh what a difference a few days make. Del Toro, who is spending some time in London before trekking out to New Zealand for the "Hobbit" shoot, sat down with BBC Radio today and dished out some details [via Sci-Fi Squad]. We still don't know who Bilbo will be, but del Toro did offer some revelations concerning "The Hobbit." He also revealed that he's found his "Frankenstein". Read More...
