Two nights ago, some of the biggest stars around came out in New York City to receive awards and accolades from the National Board of Review. One of the winners was Wes Anderson, who was honored for his "Special Filmmaking Achievement" for his work on "Fantastic Mr. Fox." And since the winners have known since December, Anderson had ample time to put a fun little acceptance bit together, which you can watch below.

This weekend is a surprisingly big one for the movies, but let's talk about last weekend for a moment. More importantly, how it might inform this weekend. "New Moon" turned out to be pretty popular, didn't it? $140 million worth of popular, including record-breaking box office numbers for its midnight opening and Friday sales. So, on top of everything else opening this weekend, there's also that big, dark "New Moon" looming to screw everything up.

But what else have we got? Well the big one for a spectacle-junkie like me is "Ninja Assassin," directed by James McTeigue. There are shurikens thrown with gatling gun-like speed and rapidity, at least one limb severed for every minute of screen time and some wicked-looking choreography involving katanas and a kusarigama (the new nunchaku, you heard it here first). It's glorious. Maybe not fine cinema in the traditional sense of story, dialogue, etc., but a hoot to see in action on the big screen. I say this because I've seen it, and it was good. Read more...

Did you know that Wes Anderson's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, "Fantastic Mr. Fox," features scenes of intense action and graphic violence. Well it does. As you'll see in this exclusive clip, featuring the Fox kids Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and Kris (Eric Anderson) as they deal with a bully. A bully who isn't all that he's cracked up to be, apparently.

Check out "Fantastic Mr. Fox" when it opens wide this weekend. Assuming of course you're not going to see "New Moon" another half-dozen times.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Wes Anderson's stop-motion animated "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is so rich with detail — every frame bursting with color and movement and utter coolness — it's almost hard to know where to look. During one scene, though, something jumped out to me: a fox reading a comic book.

The moment occurs about 2/3 through the movie, when Mr. Fox and his family are on the run from three murderous farmers. Fox's 12-year-old son, Ash (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), kicks back and opens a comic book called "White Cape." The audience gets a peek at the cover, but we never see a single page. The title does go a long way toward explaining why the young fox wears a makeshift white cape everywhere he goes — you could say White Cape is the bushy-tailed equivalent of Superman.

It turns out that while viewers never get more than a passing glance at the comic, Anderson and his team went to great lengths to design the book — so much so that they might turn the concept into an actual series.

FROM MTV.COM: Wes Anderson is comfortable with his crew of Hollywood buddies, a bunch he started cobbling together along with college roommate Owen Wilson for his debut feature, "Bottle Rocket." In subsequent movies, Anderson's hipster squad grew to encompass Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and others, as he continued to cast them in films like "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Darjeeling Limited."

So when it comes to his first animated film, the stop-motion Roald Dahl adaptation "Fantastic Mr. Fox," no one should be surprised that Wilson, Murray and Schwartzman lend their voices to the animal characters. But was it always going to be this way? Did Anderson have these actors in mind from the beginning, or did the decision to cast them develop later on? And how did Oscar winners like George Clooney and Meryl Streep sneak into this tight-knit group?

Before we delve into this week's releases, I want to take a second to give "Precious" a shout. Opening on just 18 screens, the Sundance favorite and Oscar buzzer still managed to take in just shy of $2 million. It's not a movie I intend to see again anytime soon, but it's a compelling work of fiction. And even if it wasn't, I'm a person who is impressed by cold, hard facts. And the big fact here is that "Precious" enjoyed a monster opening weekend as a limited release.

Moving on, this week's star is director Roland Emmerich's apocalyptic disaster flick, "2012." John Cusack and his pals fly around the world, bearing witness to scenes of mass destruction as humanity crumbles all around. Sounds super-uplifting, doesn't it? I'm guessing that this will be the big weekend winner; it's definitely on my "must see" list. Read more...

After surprising fans by taking on an adaptation, one based on a children's book and shot using an old style of stop-motion animation, Wes Anderson is not about to shock anyone with future film plans. But can you imagine what it'd look like if the man behind "Rushmore and "The Royal Tenenbaums" made a science fiction film?

Speaking to Access Hollywood last week, the filmmaker, whose take on Roald Dahl's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" arrives in theaters next week, claimed he is interested in doing a movie set in space. "If possible," he added, "I would like to try to actually shoot some of it on location in space. That is my preference." Read more...
