The weekly box office results have started to take the shape of a gladiatorial arena. "Avatar" is the champion contender, facing off each week against a new crop of fresh-faced movies that have absolutely no chance of casting a shadow across the phenomenon it has become. Yet. Perhaps the new week will see things change. After all, "The Book of Eli" came closer than any movie released since James Cameron's sci-fi epic to scoring a weekend box office win; it was just $10 million short of "Avatar"'s $41 million.

Three contenders step up to face off against the Na'vi this week. The closest competitor is probably Sony's "Legion," in which Paul Bettany stars as a machine gun-toting fallen angel, humanity's last defense against the Almighty's planned apocalypse. It sounds delightfully loony. I unfortunately haven't been able to check it out yet, but it's my probable pick for the weekend. Read More...

As a “G.I. Joe” nut, I was intrigued by the long-simmering rumors that Brendan Fraser was going to pop up for a cameo in the “Rise of Cobra” film as macho Marine Gung-Ho. Sure enough, the movie comes along, but the “Mummy” star instead seemed to be some generic drill sergeant who trained the other Joes in hand-to-hand combat. So I couldn’t help but wonder: Who is he supposed to be?

The interesting thing is this: Fraser has no idea, either.

“I want to say that I know the answer to that,” the star said with a laugh when we caught up with him recently. “Who exactly was I? I did not know until I saw the credit crawl when I saw the movie!” Read More...

In all my life, I’ve probably seen tens of thousands of movies. But if you catch me on a certain day and pin me in the corner, I might just say that my favorite cinematic creation of all time is Han Solo.

Honestly, has any character meant more to the '70s/'80s generation than the cool, smirking scoundrel at the helm of the Millennium Falcon? If so, it’s hard to imagine who it could be.

Recently, after 10 years in this crazy business of asking movie people questions, I finally managed to get an interview with the reportedly elusive, somewhat gruff Harrison Ford. And I’m proud to report that in real life, he struck me as neither. But since he recently returned to Indiana Jones after 20 years without the whip, I had to ask a question that means a great deal to me and many people in my generation: Will he ever play Han Solo again? Fans are in almost universal agreement that "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was a bit of a stumbling return for the series. Almost 20 years separate the 2008 release from the last Indy movie before it, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and the passed time shows. Regardless, star Harrison Ford is game to move on with more if there's a good reason. That's what he told MTV's Larry Carroll in an interview last Friday at the press junket for this week's release, "Extraordinary Measures."

"I think it would be interesting to advance the understanding of the character, as we always have had that ambition throughout the series," Ford said of his hopes for a "Crystal Skull" follow-up. "I think it would be interesting to deepen the relationship between he and his son [Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf] and play on that relationship. ... It's full of opportunity. The series is full of opportunity." Read More...
