'Speed Racer'Let the second guessing begin. The preliminary numbers are in and while we probably don't know if "Speed Racer" will end up in second or third place for the weekend, one thing is for certain: summer knows its first high-profile failure.

So why didn't you go? What made you pass on "Speed Racer" and perhaps opt to see "Iron Man" again (Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero debut continues to rake in the cash)?

Some theories...

-- Emile Hirsch? Great if you want an Oscar-caliber performance in a film like "Into the Wild"...not so great if you want help opening a movie. Read more...

That's right folks, we've got an extended preview of one of the summer's most anticipated flicks, "Speed Racer," hitting theaters this Friday. In the scene, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) learns what the Mach 5 can do, and puts its tricks to the test. After you check that out, click here to see our interviews with the cast, including Hirsch, Christina Ricci, and Matthew Fox.

Is a sequel to "Speed Racer" all but inevitable? That's the question we put to Emile Hirsch when we caught up with the star on the film's red carpet. "They're one step ahead of everybody," he responded about "Matrix" creators, Larry and Andy Wachowski, and says "Speed Racer II" is in their hands. Watch his thoughts below, and then click here for more from the premiere.

Since its founding in 2002 by Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal, the Tribeca Film Festival has premiered everything from box-office hits, like "Mission Impossible III," to indie favorites, such as "Air Guitar Nation" — and this year proves to be no different. Beginning Wednesday (April 23), the 2008 fest promises a varied feast to cinephiles and mainstreamers alike, offering poignant avant-garde dramas, documentaries and Hollywood-backed blockbuster hopefuls.

With more than 250 films being shown in about a dozen locations all over New York, the festival can be overwhelming. Without a game plan, it's easy to miss some of the festival's best and most-anticipated screenings. So for those of you planning to attend — and the rest of you following from home — MTV News has compiled a list of 10 films to watch out for. Read more...

Working at MTV is a mixed bag. On the downside, all the cubicles have little Daria stickers on them that refuse to come off. I also can't enter any of the contests. That $100,000 "Speed Racer" Mach 5 giveaway I mentioned earlier? I'm out in the cold, but you can still be in it to win it.

But then, on the other hand, this place is like doing time at the Wonka factory. On any given day you could lose out on free office cupcakes to Slash, find Carl Weathers lounging in your desk chair, or duck and cover while Snoop Dogg punches your cubicle wall. It's a colorful canvas here at the crossroads of pop culture.

And then there's the free swag. From "Beowulf" pelts and "Iron Man" Nerf launchers to "Odd Couple" antibacterial hand sanitizers, you never know what the UPS man has waiting for you. Like today, when a giant "Speed Racer" toolbox arrived.

You know this isn't your average promotional junk when opening the lid triggers a light-activated voicechip. "All drivers to your cars" the toolbox commands as a serious-looking cardboard Emile Hirsch comes into view, alongside his equally as cardboard Mach-5 racer. And free stuff ahoy. (After the jump, a ton of pics!) Read more...

Emile HirschJust for a minute, forget about superheroes and sequels. Because sometimes even movie geeks need to stop eating popcorn and get some nutrition. And that's why we're looking forward to rounding out 2008 with a nice, big, informative glass of "Milk."

"I just did this film called 'Milk' with Sean Penn and Gus Van Sant about Harvey Milk," explained Emile "Speed Racer" Hirsch recently, giving us some early details on what many are already calling this year's Oscar flick to beat. "I think it's going to be a really good film."

When we caught up with Josh Brolin a few weeks back, he had a lot to say about the top-secret biopic, which will depict one of the most bizarre stories in American politics. And in this age of Eliot Spitzer, that's saying quite a bit. Read more...

That's a mighty claim, but it's what actor Emile Hirsch is serving up with regard to his starring stint in the Wachowski brothers' upcoming big-budget adaptation of the classic animated series. "This film has all these visuals and elements to it," says the actor. "That's what the Wachowski brothers, when they were making that first 'Matrix,' [were doing]. No one had seen anything like it."

His sentiments were echoed to MTV News by the rest of the cast, including "Lost" crash victim Matthew Fox. For the full recounting of fancy promises by the "Speed Racer" crew, click here.

Collin ChouWe all know that the groundbreaking Wachowski Brothers are finally following up their "Matrix" trilogy with "Speed Racer," the Emile Hirsch flick that will zoom into theaters in June. Now, the Brothers are making plans to reunite with one of their favorite actors for the movie after that one.

Taiwanese action star Collin Chou, best known in the U.S. for playing Seraph in "Matrix Revolutions" and "Matrix "Reloaded," revealed to MTV News that he has signed on to a top-secret project the trippy filmmakers hope to begin after "Speed Racer." Read more...

It must be good to be Emile Hirsch right now. You're starring in a great new flick ("Into the WIld") directed by none other than Sean Penn AND you've just spent a couple months playing with a chimpanzee (two actually) and the Wachowskis for "Speed Racer."

You can read the full Emile Hirsch interview here or check out the full Emile Hirsch video interview here (including his story about singing with Lindsay Lohan). Or you can simply watch a bit of the interview below. Here Emile tells us why we should be jazzed for "Speed Racer." As if we needed a reason, right? Oh and he imitates a chimp really well.

Emile Hirsch stars as a disillusioned college grad who abandons his possessions and hikes into the Alaskan unknown. Sean Penn directs the pic, which is open now. To see a bevy of exclusive images from the film, click on the photo below.
