It's the first November of 2009, which means it's time to pull that lever, touch that screen or figure out whatever newfangled contraption your district has provided: today is Election Day, so cast that vote!

I put that exclamation point in there not because I'm excited to vote in New York's mayoral election, but because Election Day gets me thinking about what a rich topic elections have been for cinema. Combining intrigue, corruption, passion and the odd sex scandal, politics in general and elections in particular have made for some big screen gems over the years. Here are my favs. Read more...

Michael JacksonLast week’s sad death of Michael Jackson has all of us in the MTV newsroom working overtime these days, for obvious reasons. We already ran a story on MJ’s direct influence in movies and TV including “The Wiz” and “The Simpsons.” What’s even more impressive is the movies he inspired without even appearing in them.

Below are ten classic film moments that would not exist if Michael Jackson never moonwalked across our planet and into out hearts. What’s your favorite? Read more...

Eddie Murphy in 'Beverly Hills Cop'Brett Ratner wants everyone to be clear about one thing: he is not about to screw up the first “Beverly Hills Cop” in over 15 years—so everybody just chill out.

“It’s a hard R,” the director promised MTV News in an exclusive interview, rebutting web gossip that he’ll be helming a watered-down PG-13 reboot of the beloved action comedy franchise staring Eddie Murphy as foul-mouthed, wise-cracking Detroit cop Axel Foley.

The remake will not only maintain the original movie’s rating and star, it will also carry the same title. “We’re not going to call it ‘4,’ he said. “It will be a new ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’” Read more...

Paris Hilton in 'The Hottie and the Nottie'Is it just me, or was 2008 one of the worst years for movies ever?

Well folks, the time has finally come to vent. It’s one of my favorite days of the year, as my Razzie ballot just arrived in the mail. As a registered voter, I take my obligation very seriously, and it’s always interesting to see what the annual awards for bad filmmaking have nominated for the worst of the worst.

Here’s your chance to help me vote! Below are the newly-released nominations for the 29th Annual Razzie awards. Please post your picks in each category in the comments section below, and whichever clunkers get the most votes will make my ballot: Read more...

'Eddie Murphy'FROM SPLASH PAGE: Sure, we all had a good laugh at the expense of the U.K.-based tabloid The Sun after they announced that Eddie Murphy and Shia LaBeouf would portray The Riddler and Robin, respectively, in "Gotham" (what The Sun claimed to be the title of the follow-up to this summer's "The Dark Knight"). After all -- as we've made perfectly clear -- Warner Bros., director Christopher Nolan and various high-level execs attached to the franchise have all gone on record saying that there's been absolutely no movement on the film, let alone a script or preliminary casting.

However, the source of the speculation -- Sun reporter Gordon Smart -- has come forward in the face of the fanboy firing squad to defend his reporting, saying that he stands by his story based on "a reliable contact" close to the film. And while it's still safe to shrug and smirk this rumor off, it might be worth noting that Smart claims that the same anonymous source who kick-started the recent "Batman 3” casting rumors was responsible for another rumor back in 2005 that proved true in a big way: the casting of Daniel Craig as the new (at the time) James Bond.

'The Nutty Professor'Audiences seem a little tired of loud Eddie Murphy comedies -- but while they steered clear of "Meet Dave," they might just be willing to line up for an established brand like "The Nutty Professor."

At least, that is what Universal and Imagine Entertainment are hoping for because according to The Hollywood Reporter, they're in the early stages of developing yet another sequel. An open call is out to writers to come up with something zany, picking up where "The Nutty Professor 2: Meet the Klumps" left off. Read more...

Eddie MurphyHe’s a razor sharp comic known for his biting wit – and profanity laced tirades – so it makes perfect sense that Eddie Murphy’s monster comeback won’t be “Beverly Hills Cop 4” or “Inglorious Bastards,” or any of a dozen other projects he has been alternately promising and rumored for. It’ll be with…a silent movie?

Last month, Murphy told MTV News that for his next movie, “1000 Words,” he spends half the movie totally silent due to the fact that his character learns he only has 1000 words left before he dies.)

We don’t know the half of it, co-star Kerry Washington explained.

“Page 20,” Washington said of when in the script the film transitions into a more silent comedy. “By then it becomes a Charlie Chaplin film for Eddie Murphy. It’s hilarious.” Read more...
