Ben Kingsley

Ben Kingsley can't get enough of his "Hugo" costar Asa Butterfield, apparently. Their powerful dynamic in the Martin Scorsese 3-D period piece was easily one of the highlights of that movie, and viewers are about to be treated to another collaboration between the pair of actors.

THR reports that Kingsley is in talks to join "Ender's Game," Gavin Hood's adaptation of the science fiction classic from novelist Orson Scott Card. Butterfield was previously cast in the title role with "True Grit" actress Hailee Steinfeld flirting with the project as well. For his part, Kingsley would play a legendary war hero long presumed dead.

Billy CrystalFROM MTV MOVIES: Another day, another headline-making story surrounding the already-turbulent 2012 Oscars. This time, the story has a more safe and familiar ring to it: Billy Crystal has officially signed on to host the show.

Crystal spilled the beans via Twitter on Thursday afternoon (November 10).

"Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions," he wrote. "Looking forward to the show."

Following Crystal's tweet, the Academy released a statement confirming the hosting news. "Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage," Crystal said in the statement. "I am thrilled to be back there."

Eddie Murphy

And just like that, he's gone. Not even 24 hours after director Brett Ratner resigned as producer of next Feburary's Academy Awards amid controversy, host Eddie Murphy has stepped down as Oscars host. Whether Murphy would soldier on without Ratner became part of the discussion soon after the producer parted from the ceremony, and now the world has its answer.

No matter how you look at it, this is a disappointment. Whether Murphy had succeeded or failed, the comedy icon needed to answer the question once and for all: "Does Eddie still have it?"

FROM MTV MOVIES: There seems to be two varying opinions on whether "Beverly Hill Cop 4" will ever happen. Ask the attached director, Brett Ratner, and he'll tell you he wants to make it happen with Eddie Murphy. But the response is ... rather different if you put the same question to the A-list actor.

MTV News recently caught up with Ratner as he promoted "Tower Heist," out this Friday and starring yes, Murphy. The director sounded hopeful about another "Cop" sequel.

"I think one day, I'm hoping, because it is one of the most iconic characters ever," Ratner told us. "Eddie does not go anywhere in the world where they're not like, 'Axel Foley, what's up?' more than 'Eddie Murphy.' It is something that our hope and desire is to get it made."

Much like he did with MTV News, Ratner has spoken on several occasions about his hopes for a fourth movie featuring the legendary Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who finds himself solving crimes in the very posh Beverly Hills.

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, however, Eddie Murphy tells the magazine that the possibilities for a fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" film are dead.

FROM MTV MOVIES: The American public may no longer be convinced about Eddie Murphy's enduring comedic gifts, based on the number of folks who purchased tickets to "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave." Even Eddie Murphy may no longer be convinced about Eddie Murphy's enduring comedic gifts. But one man with no such doubt is Brett Ratner, who is producing the 2012 Academy Awards and who has tapped Murphy to host.

"I think there's no question about it. He's the greatest," Ratner told us Sunday night at the Emmy Awards about Eddie taking on the gig and slaying the crowd. "My first idea was the show had to go in the direction of more comedy with a single host, and there's nobody better on that stage than Eddie Murphy."

"I grew up watching 'Raw' and 'Delirious' and being a big fan of him," Ratner added. "He's a huge movie star. He has huge international appeal. There's nobody better. He's a pro. The guy is a pro."

Eddie Murphy's hosting the Oscars next year, and as happy as I am about the news, I can't say I'm at all surprised by it.

I had the chance to chat with "Tower Heist" director Brett Ratner for MTV News' Fall Movie Preview week, and the filmmaker had nothing but rave reviews for Murphy's work in the heist comedy. (You can read all of his comments in my interview here.)

While we were talking, Ratner — who is executive producer of the 84th Annual Academy Awards — teased about his future collaborations with Murphy: "'Tower Heist,' just like [my previous] movies were great preparation for me to make this movie, this is preparation for me to do something huge with Eddie."

The Oscars certainly qualify as something huge, I'd say, and based on something else that Ratner told me, it's pretty clear why he named the "Beverly Hills Cop" legend as his host.

Lock up your vaults: a "Tower Heist" is upon us!

Maybe it's the return of Casey Affleck's deadpan humor that I'm feeling, or maybe it's the excitement about Eddie Murphy returning to the buddy-crime genre, but there's something about the new trailer that Yahoo! premiered that I can totally get behind. The cast, which includes Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda and Gabourey Sidibe, certainly helps.

Jason Sudeikis might be a regular at hanging with his fellow celebrities thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live" and his gig hosting the MTV Movie Awards, but there still is one person he is dying to meet: Eddie Murphy.

MTV News caught up with Sudeikis to chat about "Horrible Bosses" during Sneak Peek Week, and one of the questions we tossed at him was about who his favorite '80s action star or rock band was. Sudeikis (and yours truly) consider "Beverly Hills Cop" to be one of the great action comedies of that era, and that's how Murphy climbed to the top of his list.

"I think he's something else," Sudeikis said. "I never got to meet him, but I think that's who I would probably pick."

Zach Galifianakis probably isn't the first name you think of when you imagine an action hero — but that's all about to change, assuming that "Operation: Endgame" is a success.

Filled with rival gangs of assassins equal parts deadly and hilarious, "Operation: Endgame" debuted its first official trailer today — though be warned, it's very unsafe for work. Galifianakis plays the gun-toting Hermit, and while you won't see him slimming down or adding muscle to his round, bearded body, it's nice to see "The Hangover" star venturing into new territory.

We'll have to wait until "Operation: Engame" hits DVD on July 27 to see if Galifianakis' transformation from comedian to action hero is successful, but we don't have to wait around to see that he isn't the only comedian to leap into an action film. After the jump, check out some of the other comedians who have managed to shake off the laughs and pick up the guns for starring roles in an action film! Read More...

It's the first November of 2009, which means it's time to pull that lever, touch that screen or figure out whatever newfangled contraption your district has provided: today is Election Day, so cast that vote!

I put that exclamation point in there not because I'm excited to vote in New York's mayoral election, but because Election Day gets me thinking about what a rich topic elections have been for cinema. Combining intrigue, corruption, passion and the odd sex scandal, politics in general and elections in particular have made for some big screen gems over the years. Here are my favs. Read More...
