Dwayne Johnson

These days, The Rock is cooking something a little different: money, and tons of it.

Every major studio is now privy to what was once just a whispered secret in the darkness: Dwayne Johnson saves franchises. He is the proverbial Luke to cinema's Princess Leia, and as he proved in "Fast Five," and hopes to carry on in "Journey 2," putting The Rock in what would otherwise have been a mediocre movie isn't such a bad idea.

In that spirit, here are five other franchises that we think Dwayne Johnson could bring back to life.

Ladies and gentlemen, it was no fluke.

When the first trailer for "G.I. Joe: Retaliaton" hit the web, I felt deceived by the director, Jon M. Chu. He had not told me how badass the sequel to Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" could possibly be until he released that first trailer. It was quite a shock.

Having eventually recovered, I was much more prepared for the thirty-second Super Bowl ad for the upcoming sequel. I expected ninja sword fights on a vertical rock face. Bruce Willis' terse, machine gun-toting Original Joe wouldn't bring me to tears. Those things could not surprise me.

Then I saw Snake-Eyes' exploding motorcycle.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth is a bona fide action star, as unlikely as that sounds. After coming to attention as Miley Cyrus's beau in "The Last Song," the Aussie's taken his turn in upcoming beefy blockbusters like "The Hunger Games" and "The Expendables 2." Now, the push continues, as he's about to hit a Rock.

Deadline reports that Hemsworth is close to a deal to star in "Empire State," which they call an indie heist movie based on the story of a 1982 NYC armed car robbery. At the time, it was the largest cash grab in U.S. history. Can't you just see the taglines now? (Sample: "They said it couldn't be done. They thought wrong.")

When it comes to the "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" trailer, I just wish the makers of the film would have been more honest upfront.

They tell us that they're going to make a follow-up to the "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," the Stephen Sommers-ification of the beloved action figures and TV show. They say Sommers is out and Dwayne Johnson is in. Plus, there will be Bruce Willis. That's all well and good, but nothing worth punching a wall in celebration.

But then the "Retaliation" trailer hits. Not once did anyone mention Cobra flags flying over the White House. Nobody cared to inform us that it looks like Channing Tatum will bite the dust in the first fifteen minutes. And I know for a fact that no one told us there would be a ninja fight on the side of a mountain, because if they had, we all would have been way more excited.

You might have to wait until tomorrow (October 4) to jump back into the driver seat with "Fast Five" when the Blu-ray and DVD hits shelves, but today, we’ve got an exclusive first look at two of the disc’s featurettes. Take a peek at what went on behind the scenes and how it felt for Dwayne Johnson to be the new guy on set.

The Big, Bald Showdown
It sounds like the kind of fight you imagine when you’re bored. Who would win in a fight, a grizzly bear or a gorilla? Big Foot versus the Lochness Monster? But it doesn’t much more epic than a rumble between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, and "Fast Five" gives it to us.

Since leaving the world of professional wrestling, Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock, has mostly portrayed good guys, but that could change with Relativity’s “Goliath,” as the studio is eyeing Johnson for the title role while crossing their fingers that Taylor Lautner will play David, the Biblical king of the Israelites.

The RockAnyone who has been keeping up with their television and film news should have noticed that there's been a definite shift in interest to the small screen. Plenty of major movie stars from Maria Bello and Jim Caviezel to Kat Dennings and Zooey Deschanel have starring roles in new TV series this fall, and if those shows are successful there likely will be even more announcements come next spring and summer.

Even if they aren't starring in the series, Hollywood's best and brightest are still dabbling in them. Take Dwayne Johnson, for instance. The wrestler-turned-actor is developing a TV pilot with producer Jerry Bruckheimer that is set in the world of wrestling in the 1980s, also known as the "golden age of wrestling." Deadline broke the news, and it's unclear whether Johnson will stay in a producing role or also act in the show. Regardless, it's still a new gig for the "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" star.

And he's not the only actor dabbling in television production. Ryan Reynolds also just sold his first project to Fox.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” debuted with mixed reviews in 2009, but the brand is seemingly still strong enough to support a burgeoning live action movie franchise, as plans continue to move ahead with a sequel, "G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes," rumored for a 2012 release.

While many actors, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, will not be returning for the as-yet-untitled sequel, Channing Tatum will be reprising his role as protagonist Duke. In addition to other returning stars Lee Byung-hun and Ray Park, the new movie will feature Stephen Martines rumored to play Cross-Country, Elodie Yung as the ninja Jinx, D.J. Cotrona as fan-favorite Flint, RZA as the Blind Master, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye and Ray Stevenson as bad guy Firefly.

But the costar that Tatum appears most excited about? That would be none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who's been tapped to play Roadblock.
