M. Night Shyamalan
returns to his horror roots with today's release of "Devil," the first film in The Night Chronicles. In "Devil," five strangers find themselves trapped inside of an elevator, with the human personification of the devil secretly posing as one of the members of the group. It's not quite as scary as Shyamalan and Josh Horowitz's "Escalation," but it's pretty darn close. While "Devil" certainly takes elevator horror to creative new heights, it's not the first film to emerge with some truly iconic elevator scenes. After the jump, check out some of the most memorable elevator scenes in cinema history! Read more...

Rumors have been swirling for weeks around the follow-up to "Devil," a Friday release that marks the start of the M. Night Shyamalan-conceived/produced trilogy known as "The Night Chronicles." As we pointed out earlier this month, it seemed that "The Last Exorcism" director Daniel Stamm had been all but confirmed to helm the second "Chronicles" film, based largely on suggestive statements made in interviews by both Shyamalan and Stamm.
Now the news is confirmed. A press release reveals that Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital are teamed to produce "Reincarnate," the second "Night Chronicles" film, with Stamm in the director's chair. It was confirmed earlier in the year that Chris Sparling ("Buried") penned the script; the plan is to begin production in 2011. Shyamalan said of the director, "Daniel has a preternatural control of tone. He is an actor’s director. He’s a storyteller who understands character as much as fear."
The title of the second "Chronicles" film was initially revealed to be "Twelve Strangers." Although the title has changed to "Reincarnate," the premise of the story remains the same. As stated in the release: "While deciding the fate of an accused murderer, a jury is haunted by supernatural forces that hold the key to the case." Sounds like "Twelve Angry Men" meets "Poltergeist." I'm in.

Would you be able to maintain your civility if you were trapped in an elevator with a group of strangers? How about if weird, possibly supernatural, things started happening? Maybe someone gets bitten in the dark by an unseen being?
That's the dilemma the stars of "Devil" face in the clip below, as it becomes increasingly clear that there's something not entirely human with them in the cramped space. The movie is the first chapter in producer M. Night Shyamalan's so-called "Night Chronicles" trilogy, written by Brian Nelson and directed by brothers Drew and John Erick Dowdle.

"Devil" is the first movie in a planned trilogy for M. Night Shyamalan, who will be serving as producer for the three films. The second movie in the series has already had some confirmed news: Chris Sparling, the writer of "Buried," is developing a script. There have also been some indications that Shyamalan has found his director for the second movie, "The Last Exorcism" helmer Daniel Stamm.
Let's review the facts, starting with what Shyamalan told MTV's Josh Horowitz during a recent interview.
"I'm thinking about what the title should be and we're just now... closing a deal with a director," he said. "I'll give you a hint: his movie is coming out very soon. I'm very, very excited because I loved his movie as well and he's a whole different style of filmmaker. That's what's so exciting for me, I get to hear through somebody's eyes how they would have interpreted the story that I came up with. It's basically 'Twelve Angry Men' but they're deliberating over a supernatural trial."
Okay, stop. Let's review. Read more...

September 17 "Devil," bill as being "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan," is the first entry in the filmmaker's so-called "Night Chronicles" trilogy. The story follows a group of strangers who one day find themselves trapped in an elevator. Not the worst thing in the world... until it becomes clear that one of them may in fact be (or be possessed by) the Devil.
Freaky.
I've been curious and pretty excited about this one every since I first read about it. The debut trailer goes a long way towards selling the premise for me. And today, as part of our ongoing Fall Preview week, we've got a clip from the movie for you to enjoy.
FUN TRIVIA FACT: The curly-haired guy in the gray suit seen in the clip is Geoffrey Arend. He made his screen debut in the memorable opening scene of "Super Troopers," scarfing magic mushrooms and talking about how "the snozberries taste like snozberries."

From John C. Reilly and Steve Carell to Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, MTV News has been pushing the proverbial envelope lately (and perhaps standards of good taste) with our "After Hours" series.
Up next for us? From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan, the latest entry in the M. Night Chronicles, "Escalation." And we've got your exclusive first look at the trailer!
"Devil," the first of the Chronicles, hits theaters on September 17. Being trapped in an elevator with a bunch of people -- one of whom may or may not be possessed by a demon of some sort -- is plenty scary. Now imagine being stuck on an escalator with a Penthouse pet, M. Night and a bunch of knives...watch below to see what we're talking about.

The image below is deeply disturbing. I've been sworn to secrecy as far as the details go, but you'll find out soon enough. M. Night Shyamalan does have "Devil" coming out soon, a movie that he produced and conceived. Could this image have something to do with that? Was Josh so frightened by what he saw that Shyamalan had to swoop in and comfort him?
I can't say. You can feel free to speculate though. You'll all find out soon enough.

M. Night Shyamalan makes me sad. He showed such promise with "Unbreakable" and "The Sixth Sense," both of them inventive genre films that over and over again zigged when you were expecting a zag. He quickly became known for inserting clever story twists into his movies, and I think that expectation is at least part of what made subsequent efforts "Signs," "The Village," "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening" so underwhelming. Recently released "The Last Airbender" stands apart from the rest of his oeuvre.
There's no denying that Shyamalan has some great ideas, but I think his craft has suffered somewhat from the expectations set by his earlier work. "The Last Airbender" is a good palate cleanser; it'll be interesting to see how this mysterious Bradley Cooper/Gwyneth Paltrow/Bruce Willis project shapes up. For now though, I'm more excited by "Devil," which credits Shyamalan with the story while leaving the writer and director heavy lifting to Brian Nelson and Drew & John Erick Dowdle ("Quarantine" writers), respectively.
There's a new trailer which you can peep after the jump. Read more...
