5. "Dear John" ($15.3 million)

Love is in the air everywhere you look around, largely thanks to the recent performance of Garry Marshall's "Valentine's Day," the weekend's clear-cut box office champion. Without so much as a single bonbon bribery, "Valentine's Day" swept the competition with its $52.4 million haul over the course of three days. Read More...

There's a wacky bit of circularity in the end of the seven weeks "Avatar" spent at the top of the box office. The blockbuster juggernaut hit theaters in mid-December. Over the weeks that followed, it proceeded to shatter box office record after box office record, including the holy trinity of accomplishments -- top-grossing domestic, international and worldwide release of all-time -- held by James Cameron's previous effort, "Titanic."

The movie that ultimately unseated "Avatar" was "Dear John," a couples-friendly romantic drama that likely drew in a large number of women viewers this weekend while dudes were watching the Super Bowl. Which isn't to say that the two sexes can't find something to enjoy in both the Super Bowl and a modern-day love story; rather, I'm simply speaking to the broad demographics of each one's intended audience. DESC1. "Dear John" ($32.4 million)
2. "Avatar" ($23.6 million)
3. "From Paris With Love" ($8.1 million)
4. "Edge of Darkness" ($7 million)
5. "Tooth Fairy" ($6.5 million)

At long last, "Avatar" has fallen. James Cameron's widely embraced science fiction epic finally fell from its position at the top of the box office charts this weekend, surrendering the first place medal to newcomer "Dear John," the romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. DESC1. "Dear John" ($13.8 million)
2. "Avatar" ($6.1 million)
3. "From Paris With Love" ($3 million)
4. "Edge of Darkness" ($2.3 million)
5. "When in Rome" ($2 million)

After seven straight weekend victories, is it possible that "Avatar" is finally about to fall to a romantic comedy? That's certainly how the weekend is shaping after "Dear John," Sony-Screen Gems' adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' romance novel starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, took first place on Friday night with $13.8 million. FROM MTV.COM: "Dear John" is a movie that tells all you need to know right in the title: soldier boy meets perfect girl; they bond, kiss, irritate a jealous suitor; boy ships out for combat, girl pines at home; love letters criss-cross the sea in torrents; she suddenly stops writing; months pass; then he receives ... one last letter. I'm afraid the boy's name is in fact John.

The most interesting thing about this picture — the thing that might make it work for a viewer in a certain woozy frame of mind — is the deadpan sincerity that director Lasse Hallström brings to the material. He doesn't see the story as a shop-worn anachronism (it's set in 2001, but it feels like 1944), and he doesn't milk it for heart-wringing sentiment (the plot does all the milking on its own). He plays it straight, and invites us to sniffle along if we want. There's something kind of admirable about this, I guess, in a going-down-with-the-ship sort of way.

James Cameron's box office juggernaut, "Avatar," is fresh off of owning the weekend box office for the seventh week in a row. The numbers keep slipping though, with number two box office winners gaining more ground on the sci-fi epic each week. Will this be the weekend that "Avatar" falls to number two? Let's take a look at the competition...

Of the two wide releases opening this week, only one threatens to really pull audiences away from "Avatar." It's the Pierre-Morel-directed action flick "From Paris With Love," starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. The fairly straightforward story follows two mismatched intelligence agents charged with derailing a terrorist plot. As a "Dune" fan, I'm certainly pro-Morel... but I don't think it's going to topple "Avatar." Read More...

Fox's knockout high school choir club comedy has become an instant television classic, and on April 13, it will return from its four month hiatus to air the final nine episodes of the first season. The show already had a fan following (Gleeks), had a Hot Topic tour and has been nominated for four Golden Globes including Best Comedy Series, Best Actor and Best Actress. Needless to say, seeing how the show wraps up its first season is definitely something to sing about.
