Cosmopolis

Interest surrounding "Cosmopolis" is high among different groups for different reasons. The fans of art films eagerly await everything David Cronenberg does. Fans of "Twilight" are desperate to see what post-vampire fame will mean for the leading man, Robert Pattinson. Either way, new photos from the Don DeLillo adaptation should spark the imaginations of both camps.

The latest images, which appear in the Portuguese magazine Atual (via Cosmopolis Film), show Pattinson looking particularly unhinged aiming a revolver just off-screen.

While the entertainment world waits for Robert Pattinson's completion of "Breaking Dawn," we can't help but look forward at the "Twilight" star's next edgy project: David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis."

Pattinson joined the project in January, with his costar Marion Cotillard dropping out shortly thereafter due to her pregnancy. After that, Kiera Knightly was rumored to have come on board, but later went on to deny it. During the MTV First livestream interview with Pattinson, he admitted that a new leading lady had been picked, he just couldn't disclose who she is.

"There is, I think, but I don't think I'm allowed to say it yet," he admitted before revealing: "I know Juliette Binoche is in it now, and Samantha Morton. It's going to be a crazy cast. Like, I have a feeling it's going to be amazing."

Earlier this week, Paul Giamatti was at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival to support his film, "Win Win," a title that also aptly describes another flick the recent Golden Globe-winner has on his horizon: "Cosmopolis."

Why is "Win Win" so fitting a description of Giamatti's participation in "Cosmopolis"? Well, he gets work with director David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson, of course!

After Giamatti, who stood with his "Win Win" costar Bobby Cannavale, admitted he was "not sure" when production on "Cosmopolis" would come together, there was one thing that was certain: he'd get to work with the "dreamiest man alive."

Robert PattinsonRobert Pattinson's time playing brooding vampire Edward Cullen is drawing to a close -- he's filming the saga's two-part finale "Breaking Dawn" as we speak -- but it doesn't appear the young actor's career is going to fizzle anytime soon.

He's already wrapped the lead role in the eagerly anticipated movie adaptation of the bestselling novel "Water for Elephants" (due in theaters April 22), and now Deadline is reporting that R.Pattz has snagged the lead in writer-director David Cronenberg's latest film "Cosmopolis."

If you ever entertained thoughts that it might be Naomi Watts -- and not Viggo Mortensen -- engaging in a nude spa fight in "Eastern Promises 2," you probably want to go ahead and manage those expectations. "Eastern Promises" director David Cronenberg revealed last March that a sequel to his 2007 crime thriller is indeed in the works, but sadly Ms. Watts will not be reprising her role as Anna, the London midwife whose discovery of an implicating diary put her in the cross hairs of the Russian mob.

We heard as much from Watts herself when we caught up with the actress to chat about her upcoming Valerie Plame film "Fair Game." "I don't think I'm in it," Watts laughed when asked if she'd read the "Eastern Promises 2" script. "Nobody called, so I guess they recast or maybe created a new role for a more attractive, younger girl." Read More...

There are two nearly universal facts when it comes to filmmaker David Cronenberg, the man who birthed the likes of "The Fly" and "Videodrome" into the world. The first is that, when watching one of his films, you will shift uncomfortably in your seat at least once from something that happens on the screen. And number two? You'll always walk away with something to think about.

Cronenberg is a talented filmmaker, and a smart one. Despite his flirtations with the avant-garde, he has nonetheless remained firmly entrenched in the mainstream consciousness with efforts like "Eastern Promises" and "A History of Violence." His next project has been something of a question mark for awhile. Spy thriller "The Matarese Circle" went away after Tom Cruise dropped out to do "Knight & Day." And there's been no news at all on his plans to adapt Don DeLillo's "Cosmopolis." It's looking like his next effort won't be either of those, and that's he's already got some of his cast in place. David Cronenberg is a filmmaker who knows how to properly employ gore. He is a master of body horror, a sub-genre focusing on the degeneration of the physical human form. Gore serves an artful purpose; the breakdown of the human body -- wrought by mutilation, mutation, disease or anything else -- is closely scrutinized for the purpose of creating fear in the viewer.

One of the classic examples of well-implemented gore in a Cronenberg film is "The Fly," a 1986 remake of Kurt Neumann same-titled effort from 1958. Jeff Goldblum plays Seth Brundle, a sort of mad scientist who metamorphoses into a humanoid fly after an experiment with a teleporter goes horribly wrong. It is a slow transformation, with Brundle shedding his humanity along with various body parts. Read More...

'Videodrome'Another day, another remake. Today, the honor goes to David Cronenberg as his gory and terrifying film "Videodrome" is being eyed for a remake. According to Variety, Ehren Kruger ("The Ring") is set to write and co-produce a new "Videodrome" for Universal Studios.

The original 1983 film is a cult classic, and starred James Woods as a sleazy television president who is always on the lookout for shocking programming to boost the ratings of his Toronto station. Through some creepy and sinister maneuvering, he begins broadcasting "Videodrome," a program of mindless murder and torture. Of course, even that isn't as it seems, and Cronenberg spins a rather gory tale of bodily horror, self-mutilation, and mind control. Read More...

David CronenbergDavid Cronenberg has moved away from the genre in which he made his name. The auteur behind some of the most influential—and terrifying—horror flicks around, like “Scanners” and “The Brood,” left behind his low-budget cult classics more than twenty years ago in favor of more expensive sci-fi and thriller projects. In recent years, he’s plowed into even more mainstream but no less critically respected fare with two Viggo Mortensen films, “A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises.” Currently, he’s at work on a Jason Bourne-esque spy thriller called "The Matarese Circle" that’s likely to star Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington.

All of which has led devoted horror fans to wonder if Cronenberg is done making genre pictures forever. Well, rest easy.

“I would return to the genre if I had a project that I really liked,” Cronenberg told MTV News in a recent interview. Read More...

'David Cronenberg'You can already see the trailer: From the author who brought you Jason Bourne! And the visionary director who blew your mind with “Scanners” and broke your heart with “A History of Violence”! Tom Cruise…and Denzel Washington in…“The Matarese Circle”!!

It pretty much screams Hollywood blockbuster, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. For all the ink spilled in the trades and on the Internet over the adaptation of the Robert Ludlum novel, MGM has not yet green-lit the 'Matarese' project. In an exclusive interview with the man pegged to both write and direct, David Cronenberg revealed to MTV News that the movie, while still on track, is not yet a done deal—because there are neither contracts with the stars nor a final script in place.
