"Dark Shadows" is a '60s soap opera about vampires. All things supernatural really, but vampires are a big focus thanks to Jonathan Frid's character Barnabas Collins. In an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, director Tim Burton -- who will soon turn to "Dark Shadows" with frequent collaborator Johnny Depp as its star -- said that it's too early to say if fans can expect a cameo from Frid in the adaptation.
Besides, Burton has bigger "Shadows" concerns than that. "One of the biggest challenges on ['Dark Shadows'] is to just capture that weird tone of the show," he said. For now, the focus is on Burton's unfinished "Alice in Wonderland," which hits theaters in March 2010. As the director reveals in the video below, he hasn't even seen the Caterpillar yet! "Dark Shadows" will come, in due time. But first, we all need to take a trip down the rabbit hole.
A couple weeks ago, in an exclusive chat, Tim Burton told us that he plans to film his delightfully peculiar supernatural movie “Dark Shadows” next year. Adapted from a cult classic ‘60s soap opera, the film will star Johnny Depp as the lover/biter Barnabas Collins.
That’s right: Tim Burton is making a vampire flick, and making one at time when the blood-suckers, from “Twilight” to “True Blood” to “The Vampire Diaries,” are experiencing a pop culture resurrection. How does Burton feel about joining the vampire zeitgeist? How will his “Shadows” stack up against “Twilight”? Read more...
As Tim Burton told us last week, he’s spending “every waking moment” on his Johnny Depp-led adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland.” The movie will serve up an ambitious melding of live-action, motion-capture and computer animated element. As soon as he’s finished with that mammoth undertaking—the film is due in theaters early next year—he’ll begin work on another Depp-focused project, one that has teased and tantalized movie nerds for years but which, finally, finally, is going to get underway in 2010: “Dark Shadows.”
“That’s something that [Depp and I] both love and are excited about,” the director told MTV News. “When I’m done with this I’ll definitely focus on that.”
Burton's comments jibe with what Depp said during the “Public Enemies” junket a few weeks ago. Read more...

That image up there is a scan of card that "Public Enemies" star Johnny Depp held in his hands. MTV's Josh Horowitz handed it to him, because the actor has so many projects flying through the rumorwaves that it's hard to keep track.
Depp's big reveals were that he'll be occupied next year with both the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and the long-talked-about adaptation of the UK vampire TV series "Dark Shadows." That's not all though. Slipped into the seemingly offhand comment is Depp's confirmation that rumored director Tim Burton is indeed involved with the project. Fantastic news. As you saw yesterday, Burton and Depp make magic together. Supernatural gothic sagas are crazy hot right now: HBO’s “True Blood,” those “Twilight” flicks everyone keeps talking about, plus a host of upcoming films like Benicio Del Toro’s “The Wolfman” and Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch.” Even “Spider-Man 4”’s rumored villain is a vampire. Another of these Zeitgeist-y projects is the Johnny Depp-starring adaptation of the 1960s soap opera, “Dark Shadows,” which had been in development even before this obsession with monsters, ghosts and witches took hold.
But since word of the planned film surfaced two years ago, reliable “Dark Shadows” news has been hard to come by. Now an executive in Depp’s production company, Infinitum-Nihil, which is developing the movie, confirmed some details for MTV News, left others up in the air, and hinted that we might be seeing the makings of a new supernatural franchise.
Most importantly, we wanted to know if Johnny Depp is still attached to star. “Indeed he is,” confirmed Sam Sarkar, Infinitum’s director of development. Read more...
It's the project every Tim Burton and Johnny Depp fan keeps dreaming of -- the duo's remake of "Dark Shadows." Depp has reportedly dreamed of playing vampire Barnabas Collins since childhood, and in 2007, bought the rights to the 60s television show through his shingle, Infinitum Nihil. He's been developing a remake with Warner Bros., and Burton became unofficially attached this year -- probably to the surprise of no one, given his taste towards the Gothic.
However, Depp has become attached to a number of huge projects this year, not the least of which is "The Lone Ranger" and a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment. For awhile, it seemed as though he might be putting his vampire fantasies on hold. But according to producer Richard D. Zanuck talking to Collider, "Dark Shadows" is going to be Depp and Burton's next project, and they plan to start shooting in London next summer. Read more...
