One phrase can be used to describe the speech Jeff Bridges gave when he took the stage at last year's Academy Awards to accept his Best Actor Oscar: The Dude abides. Bridges certainly held his cool as he accepted the statuette, but when he started shouting out "Thank you Academy members!" and "Mom and Dad, yeah! Look! Ahh haha, woo!," certain MTV staffers started wondering whether Bridges was just overcome with emotion or, you know, had been hitting Lebowski's private stash. With Bridges likely to earn another acting nomination for his work in "True Grit," MTV's Josh Horowitz decided to settle the question once and for all and ask the Dude if he was high during his acceptance speech.

After throwing his head back and laughing for a good 10 seconds, Bridges responded, "That's a funny question, and I like your reading, too." But was Bridges actually high? Read More...

Back in December, MTV's Kurt Loder had the privilege of sitting and chatting with "Crazy Heart" star Jeff Bridges, tonight's winner of the Best Actor (Drama) Golden Globe award and a strong contender to receive the same honors at the Academy Awards in March. Since we're all buzzing with Bridges love tonight, I thought I'd dig out this first-hand account of Kurt hanging with The Dude for you all to enjoy a second time.

Fox Searchlight Pictures threw a little holiday party at a fashionable SoHo hotel the other night, and no wonder. The company has had a very good year. Three of its movies are getting serious critical love as the year-end polls come in. The animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and its director, Wes Anderson, have just won awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review (NBR); “(500) Days of Summer” won a best-film nod from the St. Louis Film Critics Association, and best-debut awards for director Marc Webb from the NBR and New York Film Critics Online; and “Crazy Heart” -- a movie that won’t even be released till this Wednesday –- won the best-actor award from the L.A. critics for its star, Jeff Bridges. Will Oscar action for these three pictures soon follow? Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Bad Blake is a man with a lot of mileage on him, every inch of it visible. Once a big country-music star, he now drives himself around the Southwest playing one-night gigs at local bars, some of them located in bowling alleys. He lives on cheap whiskey and bad food, which he generally eats while smoking. He's too numb to be bitter, although he has worked up some resentment about Tommy Sweet, a onetime member of Bad's old backing band who's since eclipsed him and become a big country star himself. Then one day a sympathetic young reporter named Jean Craddock turns up seeking an interview — a "where are they now" sort of thing — and Bad thinks he may see a light at the end of his long dark tunnel.

"Crazy Heart," adapted from a 1989 novel by Thomas Cobb, has the shape of a tale that's possibly been too-often told — the fallen star, the quest for redemption. But the details here are fresh, and first-time director Scott Cooper, who also wrote the script, has a lithe storytelling sensibility, cutting away from familiar narrative elements before they can settle into cliché.

With "Avatar" receiving great reviews and topping critics' awards, the 3-D sci-fi blockbuster will be a huge hit with all kinds of moviegoers this weekend, not just the mainstream audiences that typically go for lots of action and special effects. But if you're looking for an alternative, at least until the crowds die down, there are a few smaller movies opening this week that might be of interest. Actually, two of these spotlighted limited release offerings open tomorrow, so you might have time to see them before you have a chance to see James Cameron's latest. And if you're not in one of the cities playing these films this weekend, hopefully they'll garner enough Oscar buzz to warrant a wider release soon enough. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Following the announcement of the nominations for the 67th annual Golden Globe nominations on Tuesday morning (December 15), reactions and statements from actors and filmmakers have come pouring in.

"Avatar" director James Cameron spoke to MTV News following the announcement that his film had four nominations, and he reveled in the fact that a sci-fi film has been recognized during awards season. "What makes this a special honor or accolade is it is a genre picture, and typically they are celebrated more by audiences than they are by critics," he said.

The results of our Box Office Poll are a forgone conclusion this week, but let's do one anyway, if only for laughs. James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" is going to crush it, no question. Box office dominance for Cameron's long-in-development film -- and his long-awaited return to directing, the first feature-length effort since "Titanic," in 1997 -- is as certain as it was for "New Moon" during its opening week.

People want to see this movie. Even if "Avatar" is an unholy mess, it's going to sell tickets. Fortunately for Cameron and his partners at 20th Century Fox, the movie is not an unholy mess. Far from it, in fact. We'll delve into that later today; for now, let us consider the other options available to moviegoers for the coming weekend. Read More...
