SmurfsFROM MTV MOVIES: Industry watchers predicted that "Cowboys & Aliens" would easily top the box office over the weekend. But not so fast, partners! It wasn't little green men who fought hardest against the cowboys played by Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford's, but rather little blue woodland creatures.

"The Smurfs" finished neck-and-neck with the Jon Favreau directed sci-fi Western with an estimated $36.2 million opening per movie at press time, tying the flicks at #1 for their respective debuts. "Captain America: The First Avenger" settled for #3 in its second weekend of release with $24.9 million. Its 10-day $116.8 million total is less than Marvel's "Thor" had earned in the same period but still a better second-week performance than "Green Lantern."

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide and was #4 at the domestic box office with $24.9 million for a $318.4 million North American total.

FROM MTV SPLASH PAGE: "Cowboys & Aliens" gallops into theaters this weekend chased by an armada of gold seeking monsters from space. On the surface, all the ingredients are in place for an all-out wall-to-wall actioner for the books: the director of "Iron Man," the stars of "James Bond" and "Indiana Jones," and a seemingly impossible mash-up of genres. Nothing could possibly go wrong there, right?

Make no mistake, there's a lot to juggle in "Cowboys," and Jon Favreau's task is not an enviable one — so how did he hold up under the pressure? Your mileage may vary, but for this movies writer, I walked away quite pleased with the wild, wild west's suddenly slick space-born sheen.

Check out five reasons you should see "Cowboys" below!

The Man With No Memory
No matter what role or movie he's in, Daniel Craig is one of the most reliably watchable actors in the business. But he takes his badass quota up a few notches in playing Jake Lonergan, a man who wakes up in the desert with a wound on his side, without a memory in his head and a whole lot of questions. Don't expect him to ask nicely, either: Jake's just as likely to punch you in the groin as he is to shut you up with one look from that cool, icy gaze. Lonergan is one of the great Daniel Craig roles, and it's a character I'd love to see explored further somewhere down the line.

Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama shocked the world with yesterday's news that the United States have located and killed Al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, and celebrities throughout Hollywood have taken to Twitter to tackle the development.

We brought you some of those highlights earlier, but the floodgates remain open well into the afternoon today, particularly with fascination over Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's apparent early knowledge of bin Laden's death, and the successful mission's eerie similarities with "Star Trek."

But Obama was a fixture of the weekend's headlines for other reasons, too: namely, the speech he delivered at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday evening, which included jabs at potential presidential rival and "Celebrity Apprentice" host Donald Trump. Several actors, writers and directors were impressed with Obama's comedic chops, particularly in light of the bin Laden development just one day later.

Looking past politics, one "Fast Five" actor was over the moon with his movie's huge debut, while Olivia Wilde identified a colleage who she won't be making press rounds with again anytime in the near future.

It's a good week for Tom Felton fans. First we saw him in the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" trailer, and today we get our first look at him in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

The image comes at us courtesy of Warner Bros. via Coming Soon, and it's got us super excited for the epic Room of Requirements scene we've had teased in the earlier trailer. Also released was an ultra-dramatic shot of Harry, Ron and Hermione, though we're a bit confused as to why Ron looks so bored.

After the jump, you can check out the new "Cowboys & Aliens" trailer, find out what could be the name for Judd Apatow's upcoming "Knocked Up" sequel, and see the newest "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" poster.

Cowboys and AliensA new trailer for "Cowboys & Aliens" was released on "American Idol" last night and it sent Twitter all atwitter. While we're not sure the title implies a singular champion, we've got some celebrity predictions for which side comes out on top.

"Game of Thrones" premieres Sunday and we keep forgetting that it's not a movie. But there's something about it that makes us love it. We're guessing it's the brooding and the violence (Just like in the movies!). We've got some early reviews fresh off the Twitter.com Internet Website. Meanwhile, "Scream 4" lands in theaters and it's Emma Watson's 21st birthday today. See what Voldemort had to say!

Avatarby Sterling Wong

Two years have passed since the Academy Awards expanded the number of Best Picture nominees from five to ten, and thanks to the enlarged field, blockbuster Hollywood productions stand a greater chance than ever at scoring a prestigious nomination.

In 2009, "Avatar" pushed "The Hurt Locker" all the way in a close race before eventually losing out on the Oscar, and this year, Christopher Nolan scored one with his thinking man’s thriller, "Inception." In fact, one could argue that Nolan contributed to the Academy’s decision to expand the Best Picture category after the backlash of "The Dark Knight," which transcended its comic book roots to become a box office and cultural phenomenon, missing out on a nomination in 2008.

If the 2009 and 2010 nominations are any indication, a big-budget production will get a shot at the coveted Best Picture award in 2011. The question is, which one? We're weighing in with some possible contenders past the jump!

How Do You KnowThe new year is here, and with it a time for reflection on the past year and things we resolve to do better in the coming 365 days. The New York Times talked to some studio executives last week about whether Hollywood had learned its lessons from the flops in 2010 and was going to lead us into a great year for movies in 2011. Amy Pascal, Sony's co-chairwoman shared: "We think the future is about filmmakers with original voices. Original is good, and good is commercial."

Original voices maybe, but original film stories not so much. Despite the fact that some of this year's most-loved films were new ideas ("Black Swan," "Despicable Me" and "Inception"), the biggest moneymakers followed the too-familiar trend of sequels, reboots and remakes ("Toy Story 3," "Iron Man 2" and "Alice in Wonderland"). And while studio execs might be professing that change is in the air for 2011, looking at a list of next year's films shows a whole lot of the same.

Here's a breakdown: Of the 93 films hitting theaters next year, 29 are original; 28 are either adaptations or based on true events (but not twisted into thrillers like "Apollo 18" and "The Rite"); 34 are either reboots, remakes or sequels; and two are documentaries (hi there, "African Cats" and "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"). After the jump we'll take a look at them and see if studios really have learned lessons from 2010's biggest flops. Read More...

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde: so hot right now.

Fresh off a butt-kicking turn in Tron: Legacy" and with a trio of promising films already due in 2011, the in-demand actress has landed a role in writer Alex Kurtzman's eagerly anticipated directorial debut "Welcome to People," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"People" stars Chris Pine as a young businessman who, after the death of his estranged father, must deliver $150,000 to the alcoholic sister (Elizabeth Banks) he never knew he had, as well as her 12-year-old son. Reluctant to part with the money, Pine's character reaches out to his sis and nephew... but without revealing who he is. Wilde will play Hannah, the Pine character's girlfriend. Read More...

By now, you've probably had a chance to check out the trailer for director Jon Favreau's sci-fi Western comic-book adaptation "Cowboys & Aliens," which stars Daniel Craig as a badass amnesiac cowboy who becomes reluctant allies with a nasty Harrison Ford to defend a town from some ill-meaning E.T.'s.

Chances are, however, that you haven't yet seen the trailer like this... with running commentary from Favreau himself. MTV sat down with the "Iron Man" director at his L.A. editing studio to get a play-by-play of what's going on in the trailer, why he made certain choices... and what you didn't see in the clip.

What do you think of the "Cowboys & Aliens" trailer? Was Favreau's commentary enlightening? Tell us in the comments!

Johnny Depp and Gore VerbinskiThe cry emanating from Disney today probably sounds something like this: Hi-ho, Verbinski! Deadline confirms that the Mouse House and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have officially tapped Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, to reunite with star Johnny Depp for the studio's reboot of "The Lone Ranger" franchise.

Depp is set to play Tonto, a Native American warrior who nurses an injured Texas Ranger back to health after his entire party (save himself, of course) is decimated by a band of outlaws. Once strong like bull again, this Lone Ranger dons a mask and, with Tonto by his side and his trusty steed Silver beneath him, hunts down the aforementioned outlaws. Read More...
