Tonight, the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off with the world premiere screening of "Creation," directed by Jon Amiel. The movie stars real-life husband and wife Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as Charles Darwin and Emma Darwin, respectively. It is an adaptation of the Darwin bio "Annie's Box" by Randal Keynes.
Of course, "Creation" just kicks things off. There's a whole weekend of indie madness to immerse yourself in. Sure, those of us who aren't fortunate enough to be in Toronto are going to have to wait. But there are some good flicks coming out of the fest, stuff that you're sure to see hit theaters in some form in the coming months. Here are a few of the highlights we have to look forward to... -- Take this as a rumor I guess. Even though it really isn't. In an interview, "Saturday Night Live" castie Bill Hader revealed that he's read the script for the upcoming "MacGruber" movie. The verdict? It's a "hard-R" rating sort of affair. Sweet. (Vulture)
-- The lineup for the 2009 edition of the New York Film Festival has been revealed. I've soured a bit on Terry Gilliam in recent years. The 2005 two-punch of "The Brothers Grimm" and "Tideland" couldn't have been more disappointing, especially as a long-awaited follow-up to 1998's fantastic adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas." With "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" however, it looks like Gilliam is back.
Putting aside the cast -- which features Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Christopher Plummer and Heath Ledger, in his final performance -- you've still got what looks like another delightfully twisted fantasy adventure, sort of like a cross between "12 Monkeys" and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen." I know this because a new trailer dropped over the weekend. Now you can know it too.
Colin Farrell didn't score an Oscar nomination this year for "In Bruges" -- but he did score a movie deal with an Oscar nominee. Variety reports that Farrell and Keira Knightley will be starring in the independent crime drama "London Boulevard." The film marks the directorial debut of screenwriter William Monahan ("The Departed"), who is really the go-to guy when it comes to crime thrillers.
Based on Ken Bruen's well-reviewed thriller, "London" will see Farrell playing the sort of part he's best at -- a South London criminal, fresh out of prison, who is trying to live the straight life. He gets a job as a handyman for a reclusive young actress. Naturally, he can't quite escape his violent past, and of course it will threaten his new life and love affair -- and he'll respond to the thugs and criminals of his circle with a terrible form of revenge. Way back in October, we brought you news of Peter Weir's newest film "The Way Back," based on the true story of a group of soldiers who made a daring escape from a Soviet gulag. Now Variety reports that he has nearly landed his cast, a mix of acting veterans and soon-to-be-huge newcomers, as Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess and Saoirse Ronan are in talks to join the film.
Farrell will play a tough, tattooed Russian, Harris an American, and Sturgess will play a young Polish inmate. Ronan will play a young Russian on the run who meets up with the fugitives. Read more...
Welcome to Sundance 2008, where your MTV News movie team is once again on the ground, and Colin Farrell is already on the red carpet professing his plans to party.
More about that later, but to whet your appetite for the days ahead, here are a few fast facts about the latest edition of Robert Redford's annual party:
- Saturday’s highly-anticipated premiere of “U2 3D” will be the first of the slick, new-school three-dimensional films (think 'Beowulf') to ever screen at Sundance. A special projector had to be installed in the Eccles Theater, but with names like Cameron, Zemeckis and Lucas developing films for the medium, the timing is right.
- The darlings of Sundance this year? 23-year-old Melonie Diaz has no fewer than four films in Park City. More shockingly, Tom Arnold is engineering a comeback with three of his own. Read more...
