Christian Bale

Christian Bale is set to continue his Academy Awards takeover. Last year, the "Dark Knight Rises" star won his first Oscar for his supporting role in "The Fighter," and this year one of his movies will be eligible for a golden statue as well.

China has chosen Bale's film "The Flowers of War" as its official selection in the foreign-language category at the Oscars this year. It comes from director Zhang Yimou, best known in the US for directing the 2002 movie "Hero." The film will receive a limited US release starting in late December, after its world premiere in China on December 16. "The Flowers of War" is set against the backdrop of the Nanking Massacre during the second Sino-Japanese War in 1937.

Pretty much any time we see Jason Statham in anything, we know he'll be some sort of likable bad-ass and will kick the crap out of some people in doing so. This week's "Killer Elite" is no exception, and even better than Statham lighting up the screen solo, he's joined by serious A-listers Robert De Niro and Clive Owen.

MTV News caught up with the man of action recently to discuss how his Oscar winning and Oscar nominated co-stars raised the bar on set.

"It’s like boxing with Muhammad Ali, it’s like winning a Formula One race," Statham said of working with De Niro. "It’s the top of the mountain, it doesn’t get any better."

Clive Owen is convinced his character in "Killer Elite" isn't the bad guy in this spy-thriller-meets-popcorn-action-flick production. Jason Statham's hero, as he gets his face bloodily pounded in by Owen's menacing presence, might argue otherwise, but we're certainly not going to argue with either of these gentleman.

"Whenever I play a part in a film, I never think he is the bad guy," Owen told MTV News. "You have to always find a reason and understand why he's doing what he's doing."

Fair enough. And sure, Owen (Oscar nominee that he is) did his big-screen due diligence, taking what might have been a villain on the page and transforming him into, at the very least, a bad guy certain of his noble intentions. But the actor also admitted, perhaps with less than a shred of truth, that his conception of Spike (the leader of a team of hit men targeting Statham and other ex-special ops agents), began and ended with facial hair.

Hardcore "Fright Night" fans have had mixed reactions since the new trailer for the vampire remake debuted earlier this year. The horror comedy's original cast has some big shoes to fill – especially where the roles of fanged fiend Jerry Dandridge and vampire killer extraordinaire Peter Vincent are concerned. DreamWorks' new international trailer has arrived and gives us a better look at some of our principal players – namely Charlie's (Anton Yelchin) idol and partner in staking, the new Peter Vincent ("Dr. Who's" David Tennant) who is now a Las Vegas magician instead of a horror TV host.

The trailer also delivers more on the horror front – opening like a snarky comedy before it digs into the dark stuff. Colin Farrell seems to fit the bill as the sexy and scary vamp that retaliates against Charlie for being a nosy neighbor. When the high schooler and his horror-obsessed pal Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) start to spy on the undead activity happening next door, Jerry goes after Charlie's family (Toni Collette), his girlfriend (Imogen Poots), and eventually the teenager himself.

Check out the trailer and let us know if you think the remake can stand up to the original. Take a bite out of the rest of this week's horror news after the jump.

Hugh JackmanDirector Shawn Levy wants to take a "Fantastic Voyage" with Hugh Jackman. Really, who doesn't?

Deadline reports that the director wants the actor to star in his James Cameron-produced 3D update of the 1966 sci-fi flick about a rescue mission into the body. Still, the modern take on "Fantastic Voyage," which Deadline says has become a "dramatic love story," doesn't have a green light yet. But if the film does get the go-ahead it would certainly give the star something to do while the kinks for "The Wolverine" get worked out.

Check out the rest of today's biggest casting news in Hollywood, including Rachel Weisz possibly bewitching "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and a set of "Bones" stars headed to the big screen.

I was never a big fan of "Friends," and my least favorite episode of "30 Rock" is probably the one guest-starring David Schwimmer as Greenzo, a spandex-and-cape-wearing environmental spokesperson. So I'm all for the actor continuing his career behind the camera with a new directorial effort titled "Trust," as reported by Variety.

Schwimmer also wrote the story -- scripted by Andy Bellin -- about a family dealing with the aftermath of an incident with an online sexual predator. Cast as Dad, Mom and the 14-year-old victim are Clive Owen, "Where the Wild Things Are" star Catherine Keener and newcomer Liana Liberato, respectively. Read more...
