Summer action romp "Terminator Salvation" hits DVD and Blu-ray today. Continuing the story started by James Cameron back in 1984, "Salvation" forges new ground for the series by serving up a story after the apocalyptic Judgment Day we've been hearing about for all these years. John Connor (Christian Bale) is the leader of the human resistance and we finally get to see him bring the fight to the evil robots of Skynet.

The universe created by Cameron has become a truly rich one, spawning a (criminally underrated) television series, comic books and novels. It's the last one that I'm here to feature today. "Terminator Salvation: Cold War," from Titan Books, is freshly arrived on store shelves. Set in two locations at two different times -- Russia 2003 and Alaska 2018 -- the story follows a different front in humanity's war against the machine armies. In the excerpt after the jump, read as a loen Terminator dispatches a hulking grizzly bear with ruthless efficiency. Read more...

Christian BaleOpinions are like a Terminator-filled post-apocalyptic future -- they're absolutely everywhere.

On the matter of "Terminator" as a film franchise, opinions on the recent "Terminator Salvation" are fairly widespread, though the general consensus seems to be disappointment with the theatrical cut. A potential remedy might be on the way courtesy of the "Terminator Salvation - Director's Cut" home video release however. UGO reports that the MPAA has rated McG's cut of the film with a hard R for "some violence and brief nudity." Might this version of "Terminator Salvation," the one that McG wanted us to see all along, be enough to change the commonly held dissatisfaction with last May's release?

Possibly... but probably not. Read more...

Johnny DeppFROM SPLASH PAGE: In last week’s poll, I asked readers to vote on the “Batman 3″ rumors they wished were true. From Cher playing Catwoman and Christopher Nolan exiting the franchise to Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Penguin and Christian Bale taking his growl elsewhere, there’s been no shortage of rumors surrounding the next installment of the Batman film franchise. And no rumor has been without its share of fans, either.

When all the votes were tallied, however, the margin of votes between the most popular rumor and the next wish-it-was-true option was one of the largest in any of our polls thus far. And while the winner isn’t much of a surprise, the support for some of the other might raise a few eyebrows (and cause some heart palpitations) among the Batman faithful.

Ryan ReynoldsHistory was made on Friday when Ryan Reynolds officially became the first actor to star as both a Marvel and DC Comics character. Fresh off of his spin-off spinning turn as Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," Reynolds is now getting to headline a “Green Lantern” film.

The "Van Wilder" star is just one of many actors who have made the smart –- and profitable –- choice to double-dip in the biggest and the best film franchises. Here is a look at a few of Hollywood's other famous double-dippers. Read more...

Tom CruiseEven us film geeks at MTV Movies Blog must admit that there are times when we experience cognitive dissonance between our favorite actors and the characters they portray. Sometimes, an actor capable of delivering a beautiful performance can come off as something very different when thrust in the public eye. In other words, even the most talented performers can suffer from some severe image problems.

Need some examples? Here are five Hollywood personalities whose work we adore, but who could use a bit of a makeover when it comes to their public persona. Remember guys, we're saying this because we love you. Here's some unsolicited advice for a few of our favorite bad boys (and girls). Just a note that those awesome pictures after the jump are the work of MTV's talented associate producer/photoshop ninja/silent assassin Sohyung Kang. If you'd like to see them in their full-size glory, make sure to check out our "Hollywood's Public Enemies" flipbook! Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: The outlaw vs. the man of the law. The American folk hero vs. the American federal agent. Johnny Depp vs. Christian Bale. That's the battle taking shape as Michael Mann's "Public Enemies," the true story of tommy-gun-toting bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) and FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), pop-pop-pops its way into theaters, starting on Wednesday (July 1).

Set in the Depression-devastated 1930s, Dillinger forms a gang with some creatively named rule-breakers — Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd — and sets about looting banks that have been foreclosing homes and repossessing goods throughout the Midwest. Along the way, naturally, Dillinger finds time for a little bit of outlaw romance, as he falls head-over-machine-gun for Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), a vulnerable lounge singer. FBI head honcho J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) tasks Purvis with the task of capturing Dillinger and putting the kibosh on this crime wave sweeping the crisis-stricken country.

Amy AdamsAmy Adams can do no wrong in my book, but if you were afraid all she was destined for was bubbly fare such as "Leap Year" or "The Ten Best Days of My Life" then you'll be glad to know she's taking a detour through the rough part of town. Adams is set to join Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in the true life tragedy of "The Fighter."

"The Fighter" is the story of lightweight championship boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg), and his trainer and brother, Dick Eklund (Bale). The film will portray their early days on the streets of Lowell, Massachusetts, Eklund's bout with drugs and violence and Ward winning the world championship in London. If you're wondering where a lovely girl fits into all this, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Adams will play Charlene, a "tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper from Massachusetts" who ends up involved with the tough-as-nails Mickey. She won't be the only woman on set, as Melissa Leo ("Frozen River") has also joined as the boys' mother. Read more...

Christian BaleThough Christian Bale has two huge entries in the summer ’09 movie season—“Terminator Salvation” and next Wednesday’s “Public Enemies”—he hasn’t actually shot a film in a year. But this July he’ll be returning to work and—as MTV’s Josh Horowitz learned during an interview with the actor to promote “Enemies”—kicking some serious ass when he does.

The film, called “The Fighter,” co-stars Mark Wahlberg, and tells the true story of “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg), who goes on a “Rocky”-like journey through the world of light welterweight boxing with the help of his brother Dickie Eklund (Bale), a boxer-turned-jailbird-turned-trainer. FROM MTV.COM: Both began their careers in the mid-'80s with instant classics ("Empire of the Sun," "A Nightmare on Elm Street"), matured as actors with critically acclaimed roles in the '90s ("Ed Wood," "American Psycho") and broke through with iconic characters in recent years (the "Pirates" and "Batman" films). Both possess the rare quality of making women want them and men want to be like them — and the even rarer skill of being indie-minded actors who lose no credibility when they delve into blockbuster territory.

And on Tuesday evening, the remarkably similar career trajectories of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale converged on a red carpet full of gals, guns and gangsters at the premiere of "Public Enemies."

McG talks 'Terminator Salvation'Did “Terminator Salvation” thrill you, bore you or simply tick you off? No matter how you feel, you’ll definitely want to take a look at a feature we just took live over on the MTV Movies page, in which director McG answers some burning plot questions from you guys.

And thanks to the power of the Movies Blog, here are four more questions McG was eager to sink his teeth into. Think of them as bonus features, minus the DVD:

Q: In the earlier movies, Skynet is not aware of Kyle Reese. So, why are they aware of him now? Read more...
