For many Americans, Benedict Cumberbatch is somewhat of an unknown quantity. Though he’s gathered accolades for his roles in English projects like "Sherlock" and "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy," he hasn’t had a big Stateside success just yet -- something that will change soon, as he’s set to star in a number of blockbusters within the year. Though his voice will only be used for "The Hobbit," Cumberbatch will have a prominent role as (perhaps) a villain in the untitled "Star Trek" sequel, due for release in 2013.

When we caught up with "Star Trek" star Chris Pine (Captain Kirk, if you forgot) at the premiere of "This Means War," he told us about his excitement for Cumberbatch to get his proper due.

The Muppets

Did you know "This Means War" could have had two different endings? Turns out McG toyed with the idea at one point. In other film news, Warner Bros. opens a new theater in Washington DC, Bret McKenzie laments not being able to perform at the Oscars and five new "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" images hit the web.

It's February 7, and you're tuning in to today's daily news round-up!

If you missed it, we chatted with "This Means War" leading lady Reese Witherspoon last night during an MTV First dedicated to the flick. Her onscreen character Lauren is lucky -- or, rather, unlucky -- enough to start dating two men who turn out to be best buddies and coworkers at the CIA.

During the event, we debuted two new clips from the film, which you can check out right now. The first plays up the action side of the movie, with one of Witherspoon's beaus, FDR (Chris Pine), crashing her date with the other, Tuck (Tom Hardy). And we mean literally crashing: when Lauren goes to collect herself in the bathroom after the surprise appearance, FDR and Tuck manage to destroy the restaurant.

Chris PineMeet James Kirk, the fearless Starfleet captain whose wits are matched only by his willingness to throw himself into danger. Meet Jack Ryan, the razor-sharp analyst who will one day become the President of the United States.

Chances are good that you've already met both of these men, but only one of them is coming soon to a theater near you — for now, at least.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures is putting its planned Jack Ryan reboot on the backburner for now while they focus on "Star Trek 2," which could start production as soon as this fall. Leading man Chris Pine is the actor tasked with playing both Kirk and Ryan, but it looks like we'll be seeing him in his familiar Starfleet uniform before he dons Ryan's suit-and-tie.

Captain Kirk[UPDATE: We've spoken with Chris Pine's representatives who have confirmed that Chris does NOT have a Facebook account, so the following report is officially debunked. Sorry for the confusion, folks!]

Captain Kirk, you have command.

We've been waiting for word on the sequel to J.J. Abrams' fantastic "Star Trek" revival pretty much since the moment it arrived in theaters. But the cast and crew members involved with the franchise have been understandably tight-lipped on the project, so much so that we aren't even sure that the "Star Trek 2" script exists.

Well, it does exist, and Chris Pine has read it. After the jump, find out what the "Star Trek" hero has to say about the sequel's script!

Robert PattinsonSome of Hollywood's most popular young actors are about to become the stars of the latest anime-to-movie sensation.

The upcoming live-action remake of "Akira" is coming together for its planned August start date, and Splash Page reports on a list of actors who've allegedly received the script: Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy are just some of the names reportedly in contention for roles. Casting is far from finalized, however, so we'll have to wait and see how this one shakes out.

We have more news past the jump, including who might end up directing "Cleopatra," which horror writer might be penning a "The Walking Dead" episode and what ever happened to Brad Pitt's "World War Z" adaptation.

One of my favorite films of last year was Tony Scott's "Unstoppable," a tight action flick starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. In the movie, a runaway train speeds towards a populated area with only our two stars between it and certain destruction.

The film is now on Blu-ray and DVD, and to celebrate we got an exclusive clip from the release. Check it out above, and tell us what you think in the comments section below or on Twitter!

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde: so hot right now.

Fresh off a butt-kicking turn in Tron: Legacy" and with a trio of promising films already due in 2011, the in-demand actress has landed a role in writer Alex Kurtzman's eagerly anticipated directorial debut "Welcome to People," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"People" stars Chris Pine as a young businessman who, after the death of his estranged father, must deliver $150,000 to the alcoholic sister (Elizabeth Banks) he never knew he had, as well as her 12-year-old son. Elizabeth BanksAlways dreamed of starring in a big Hollywood movie? Not opposed to that movie also featuring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks? You might just be in luck... if you're a male, aged 11 to 13, and can get yourself to Los Angeles by Saturday.

DreamWorks has announced that they will be holding an open casting this Saturday (December 4) in L.A. to fill a lead role in the upcoming drama "Welcome to People." The studio is looking for someone to play a character named Josh, who's described as "male, 11-13 years-old, Caucasian, athletic, independent and confident." If you fit that description, get thee to L.A. pronto. Candidates don't need to have any previous acting experience, nor do they have to prepare anything for the audition. They must be able to memorize large quantities of dialogue, however, and should be comfortable with PG-13 language (who isn't these days?). Read More...

Chris Pine in UnstoppableRemember the Sandra Bullock-Keanu Reeves thriller "Speed"? Well, director Tony Scott's "Unstoppable" is kind of like that, except it subs an unmanned runaway train carrying toxic chemicals for a bomb-strapped bus, ditches the Keanu-Sandra sexual tension for a Denzel Washington-Chris Pine reluctant bromance, and does not feature a deliciously villainous turn from Dennis Hopper. No, in "Unstoppable," the villain is the out-of-control train itself, which, as the trailers like to remind us, is basically "a missile the size of a skyscraper" on a collision course with about 100,000 people. Not good times.

Heroic guys that they are, Washington's soon-to-be-retired engineer and Pine's newbie conductor volunteer to chase down this runaway train before it goes off the rails and blows an entire city to high heaven. In the exclusive clip below, Washington decides to go for a mid-pursuit run across the tops of the train he and Pine are using to pursue the aforementioned automotive missile, while Pine is left to man the steering wheel. Not quite surprisingly, not all goes smoothly. Check out the clip after the jump. Read More...
