"Mr. Popper's Penguins" isn't likely to have nearly as much S&M as "Sucker Punch," but that hasn't stopped Carla Gugino from signing on to star alongside Jim Carrey in the adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater's 1938 children's book. She's handled more mature parts under Zack Snyder, both in "Sucker Punch" and in "Watchmen" as Sally Jupiter, but this venture should be a bit more wholesome.

Gugino will appear under the direction of Mark Waters ("Mean Girls"), according to a Variety report. The 20th Century Fox family project will cast her in the story of a wealthy New York businessman who inherits six penguins and goes on to learn about life, love and human relationships. John Davis ("Predators") will produce. Read More...

"Sucker Punch" is one of those movies that might not be on your radar, but it should. Zack Snyder, the director of "300," "Watchmen" and the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, is finally turning his attention -- and his talent for what makes stylish film -- to an original story. That story is "Sucker Punch."

We don't know much. A young girl is committed to an insane asylum by her jerk stepdad and she slips into an elaborate fantasy world of her own creation to deal with it. MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke with Carla Gugino, who stars with Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Jon Hamm, Michael Jai White and a large ensemble of other talented players, at South By Southwest over the weekend, and she had a little bit to say about her unusual character. Characters.

"I play a Polish psychiatrist in the 1960s," she said. Well that's not very strange. "And in an alternate world I play a dominatrix choreographer-slash-madame in a brothel," she added. Oh. Well... yeah. That's pretty out there. Read More...

Carla GuginoWhat would you rather see Carla Gugino dressed up in: a nurse’s uniform or a madam’s dress/corset? Fortunately for you fanboys, you’ll get both costumes in Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Sucker Punch.” Gugino is reuniting with her “Watchmen” director for the film, in which she’ll play a dual role. Of sorts.

The film takes place in a 1950s mental institution, where a young girl (Emily Browning) has been sent for a lobotomy. However, with the help of her friends (Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish) she enters an alternate reality with hopes of escaping the hospital. Read More...

Carla Gugino as Silk Spectre in 'Watchmen'FROM SPLASH PAGE: As with most things “Watchmen,” when a brand new trailer and "Watchmen" poster debuted yesterday from 2009’s most anticipated film, fans once again exalted director Zack Snyder for his fidelity to the source material.

Wait’ll they get a load of how far that fidelity actually extends, Carla Gugino told MTV News.

An inter-chapter filler in the graphic novel, the memoirs of the first Nite Owl, “Under the Hood,” will be a bonus feature on the DVD -- bringing together all the old Minute Men for a mockumentary-style biography. The idea, Gugino insisted, was to try not to lose anything from the source material.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Carla Gugino in 'Watchmen'FROM SPLASH PAGE: Sure, lots of comic book movies have people dying, people killing, people even setting fire to other living people (we’re looking at you Chris Nolan. Don’t think we’re fooled cause you cut away). But how many comic movies are bold enough to show a rape?

None, of course -- at least not until “Watchmen,” which will keep a violent scene of sexual assault from the comic intact, co-star Carla Gugino told MTV News. “It was really brutal. It was brutal to shoot,” Gugino said of the scene, in which the Comedian (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) attacks an young Sally Jupiter, who only manages to avoid getting raped by the timely intervention of fellow mask Hooded Justice.
