Gatsby

"The Great Gatsby" is the Great American Novel, or at least the one you were assigned to read in class before skipping ahead to SparkNotes. Adaptations have been done before, but why not another one? That's the thinking behind Baz Luhrmann's version, a sparkling 3D blockbuster with a budget over $100 million, a cast headed by multiple Oscar nominees and a Christmas 2012 opening date that basically screams, "We are going to win so many freaking awards."

Today, Warner Bros. released a handful of photos showing its actors in place. Check out Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy, looking appropriately dressed to the nines for this 1920s period piece.

After a series of extremely well-received screenings and the build-up of buzz from premieres at Cannes and the Los Angeles Film Festival, "Drive" is turning out to be one of the most hotly anticipated movies of awards season. It comes from "Bronson" director Nicolas Winding Refn and stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Ron Perlman, and has all the makings of Oscar gold.

MTV News has an exclusive clip from the upcoming movie that shows a tense but tender scene between Gosling and Mulligan. There's no dialogue in the clip, and that's because there doesn't need to be. Gosling's character Driver notices that the man next to him is holding a gun, and instead of creating a confrontation with him, he moves Mulligan's Irene safely behind him and shares a passionate kiss with her.

It doesn't give away much, but the clip certainly is a tease for the violent drama.

"Drive" has been generating a ton of interest lately, and a recently released trio of clips is solidifying that interest even more.

In terms of casting, I'm pretty sure the line-up of Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman is all the awards-season candy the critics can take. And all of the stars of "Drive" look to be on their A-game, if these clips and the response to the movie so far is any judge.

One of the hottest upcoming films in Hollywood is Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," so it's no surprise that leading lady Carey Mulligan was a bit nervous about landing the role.

MTV News caught up with the "Never Let Me Go" star when she was at San Diego Comic-Con promoting her latest flick, "Drive," that costars Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston. According to her, waiting to hear back about the audition was quite a stressful experience for her.

"I auditioned for that when I was doing 'Drive,' so [director] Nick [Winding Refn] was there for the whole phone-ringing, agent, 'Ahh!' will I, won't I," Mulligan explained.

Baz LuhrmannNothing screams 3-D like a tragic love story set against the backdrop of Long Island in the swingin' '20s. At least that's the way filmmaker Baz Luhrmann sees it.

According to Forbes.com, last week the "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" writer-director told the audience at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that he has "workshopped" his upcoming take on "The Great Gatsby" in 3-D. While he has yet to decide whether the film will actually be presented in three dimensions, Luhrmann believes the format doesn't just have to be used for "gags" (think the airborne "man parts" in "Piranha 3D") or for "spectacle and drama" (as in "Avatar") as it has been thus far; he posits that it can be used for "poetic cinema" as well. The holiday season is rife with DVD and Blu-ray releases, chock full of special features, fancy packaging (a la "Sex and the City: The Complete Collection") and cutesy promo campaigns, like the one for Universal's "Despicable Me," -- which helped the movie gross $25 million in its first day of DVD release.

One of today's big releases is "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," and to celebrate, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is offering free taxi rides in few of New York City's busiest areas (Wall Street, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, etc.) from Dec. 20-24. Look for one of 10 Wall Street-themed cars for your freebie! (Also, good luck wrestling others for a ride.) For those who don't live in the Big Apple, MTV News is happy to showcase a snippet from the DVD and Bluy-ray's special features: "A Conversation with Oliver Stone and the Cast."

In the clip, Stone, Josh Brolin, Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf and Carey Mulligan are sitting in a room chatting about the film and, specifically, how it differs from the original. Read More...

Carey MulliganAfter much speculation, the role of Daisy Buchanan in the upcoming adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" has finally been cast, and it could not have gone to a more perfect actress. Deadline spoke with director Baz Luhrmann, who confirmed to them that he had tapped British starlet Carey Mulligan to play the pivotal love interest in the film.

"I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting," Luhrmann said. "However, specific to this particular production of 'The Great Gatsby,' I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: "Hello, Daisy Buchanan." There is absolutely nothing I don't like about this news. Nicolas Winding Refn wrote and directed one of my favorite films last year, the Tom Hardy-starring "Bronson." Ryan Gosling, a talented actor, is starring in Refn's next film, "Drive." It's an adaptation of a James Sallis novel about a Hollywood stuntman (Gosling) who has a part-time job as a getaway. A bank robbery goes wrong and this nameless stuntman ends up running for his life with an ex-con's girlfriend in tow.

The news today is that Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") are in negotiations to join the cast, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. If she takes the role, Mulligan will play the aforementioned girlfriend. Cranston's potential role isn't specified, but it would presumably involve some kind of badassery. Answers should come soon, as shooting expected to start in Los Angeles sometime next month.
