"Avatar." "Alice in Wonderland." "How To Train Your Dragon." The success of these latest big budget 3-D epics wouldn't have been possible if not for the groundwork laid by previous filmmakers decades earlier, during a time when 3-D filmmaking was considerably less sophisticated than the material currently seen in movie theaters. Many of these movies, some ranging all the way back to the 1950s, aren't quite as involved as the trip from your theater chair to the lush jungles of Pandora, but the efforts are nonetheless quite impressive — or, at the very least, highly nostalgic.

After the jump, we've listed some of the classic 3-D movies that might pale in comparison to today's technological standards, but still thrilled and invigorated audiences in their prime. Read More...

As we told you earlier in the week, Disney is re-opening the classic 3-D attraction "Captain EO," a sci-fi short starring Michael Jackson as a starship captain tasked with delivering a gift to the wicked Witch Queen (Angelica Huston). With some help from the power of song, Jackson and his crew overpower the queen and teach her that it's okay to be good.

Touching. The attraction re-opened yesterday, complete with a shiny new 70mm print. We've got some video from the event, that you can check out below. And of course, if you want to see "EO" you can head to a Disney theme park. Or wait for the (hopefully) inevitable 3-D Blu-ray release, which I expect will arrive sometime after 3-D display technologies have been adopted by the public at large.

It's been known for awhile now that the higher powers at Disney intend to bring "Captain EO" back. The sudden passing of Michael Jackson last summer led to a renewed interest in the 3-D sci-fi movie/theme park attraction. Really, it was inevitable that it would return.

The word straight from the Mouse House is that "EO" will be back on Tuesday, February 23. Yes, that's tomorrow. The 3-D musical will screen in the theme park's Tomorrowland Theater, complete with a shiny new 70mm print and improved sound thanks to "acoustic enhancements made to the theater since the film last played there in 1997." Captain EOHere are a few words on Michael Jackson from Diane Fredel-Weis, a Los Angeles-based writer. Diane worked on the marketing for Jackson's "Captain EO," a 3-D sci-fi short featured as an attraction at Disney theme parks. The film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by George Lucas and starred Jackson alongside Anjelica Huston and Dick Shawn. Diane, who met the late pop star while working on "EO," was kind enough to detail some of her experiences for MTV readers.

When I walked onto the Culver City soundstage of "Captain EO" in early 1986, it was a thrill on many levels. The sets were mind-blowing. Dark, complex, coiled metal environments. Actors walking around in alien costumes. Dozens of people busy with the production. And of course, the star of the film, Michael Jackson, was there. Read More...

Michael JacksonMichael Jackson was the epitome of cool to those of us who grew up in the 1980s. He was probably the first celebrity I recognized and followed as a young kid.

One of my fondest memories of Jackson was his Disneyland 3-D movie, "Captain EO." When I first visited Disneyland it was one of the newest and most popular attractions. Being at Disneyland, the last thing you really want to do is sit down for anything... but this was a Michael Jackson movie! In 3-D! Read More...
