The Tourist and True Grit

It's not the least bit shocking that awards-season front runners like "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan" cleaned up when the 68th annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. But "The Tourist"? We love Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp as much as the next person, but apparently not nearly as much as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which doles out the Globes. Despite ice-cold reviews and a lukewarm box-office reception, "The Tourist" walked away from today's nominations with three nods, including one for Best Picture. And that was just one of the big surprises. Mark Wahlberg's boxing drama "The Fighter" weighed in with an impressive six noms, while Depp was nominated twice in the same category.

As usual, there were a fair amount of prominent snubs as well. Not a single nod for "True Grit"? Seriously? And are "The Tourist" and "Burlesque" and the rest of Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy race really more worthy of a nomination in that category than "Toy Story 3"? Check out our picks for the biggest snubs and surprises of this year's Golden Globes nominations. Read more...

MTV's Fall Preview week of exclusives continues today with a look at the hottest upcoming movies of the next four months. We know what you should see and why you should see it, and we've got it all right here. Keep it locked to MTV News and MTV Movies Blog for continued updates throughout the week!

What's It Called: "Burlesque"

What It's About: A young girl from middle America heads to Los Angeles with dreams of hitting it big. She ends up working it in a neo-burlesque club owned by a former dancer.

Who's In It: CHRISTINA AGUILERA. Also, Cher, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane, Peter Gallagher, Kristen Bell (pictured above) and Stanley Tucci.

Why You Should Care: Two words: "Showgirls 2." No, there's no tie between "Burlesque" and the Paul Verhoeven flick. But, as many who saw the debut trailer for "Burlesque" noted, there are definitely elements that carry between the two. And seriously... that's awesome. Also, there's a great cast to back up Aguilera's amazing voice. And here's the cherry on top: Steve Antin, making his feature debut as a director, is known well for his memorable role as the jocky jerk Troy in "The Goonies." Amazing.

When You Can See It: November 24 (not soon enough)

I kind of love this debut trailer for "Burlesque," starring pop icon Christina Aguilera. There's a definite "Showgirls" vibe here (I mean that as a compliment), at least at the start of it. Then the lovely Aguilera lets loose with some of those powerful vocals, and it becomes clear this movie is going to travel in a different direction. After viewing the trailer, I can honestly say that I'm very curious to see what that direction is.

When Eminem decided that his status as a superstar musician gave him the credentials to become an actor, the result was “8 Mile,” an Oscar-nominated instant classic; Mariah Carey’s 2001 bomb “Glitter” might just be the worst movie ever made. Somewhere in between, we’ve had Britney’s “Crossroads,” Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard,” 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” and dozens of other boundary-defying debuts. Now, it’s time for Christina Aguilera to finally make the move – and one of her famous co-stars thinks Xtina has what it takes.

“I hear she’s wonderful,” explained Stanley Tucci, the accomplished veteran actor/writer/director of more than 80 movies and TV shows, who has been cast alongside Aguilera in “Burlesque,” also starring Cher, Kristen Bell and Cam Gigandet. “I’ve been talking to some of the people at the studio, and everyone is thrilled with her.” Read more...

CherCall it a hunch, but I think "Burlesque" already has its place in film history set. Not only will it be the acting debut of Christina Aguilera, but the modern musical has signed on the music icon of all icons: the one and only Cher. Yeah. It's going to be flamboyant.

According to Variety, Aguilera will play an ambitious small-town girl fresh from the cornfields of Iowa. Possessing one heck of a voice (hey, it's Aguilera) she goes West to pursue her singing and dancing dreams. The aspiring star winds up in a neo-burlesque club on Sunset Boulevard that’s run by Tess (Cher), a former dancer who struggles to keep the club open and gives the young girl a chance to become a star.
