Remember that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot that's been kicking around Hollywood? Consider it staked — for now, at least.
The Los Angeles Times reported late last week that screenwriter Whit Anderson — the newcomer who'd been hired to reinvent Joss Whedon's widely adored film, TV and comic book series about a teenage vampire slayer and her equally capable friends — has been booted from the project after delivering a script that "fell far short of expectations and, in the end, was rejected completely."

It's summer movie season, which means horror fans have sun, surf, and killer fish on the brain. We've been bringing you tons of "Piranha 3DD" news – because life just doesn't feel complete without it – but this week's best in horror updates also skinny-dips, battles sharks (and some invisible sea creatures), and heads to Venice, California.
Movies like "Hobo With a Shotgun" and "Machete" have breathed new life into the exploitation subgenre, and "Skinny Dip" is upping the ante with a great cast that includes Sasha Grey, badass Danny Trejo, and now Pam Grier, Michael Madsen, and Brigitte Nielsen. Meanwhile, Halle Berry is battling sharks in "Dark Tide," but the cast of "Sector 7" has to deal with a transparent monster on board their ship. There's a vampire on Venice Beach that wants to take a bite out of you. No, it isn't Lindsay Lohan, but she's dressed to kill for a new bloodsucking photoshoot that "Buffy" star Sarah Michelle Gellar would probably put a stake to.
It's all in this week's Horror Bites after the jump.

"Bridesmaids" is almost here, and it looks like director Paul Feig is getting some pre-wedding jitters, if his recent tweets are any indication. Of course, he's got nothing to worry about — early buzz is very positive, with many members of the Twitter-Wood community already rallying behind the Kristen Wiig comedy.
But critical acclaim doesn't always translate to financial success, of course. Hollywood producer Jeff Katz hopped on Twitter and went over the latest tracking data for this summer's hottest movies, and some of the results may surprise you.
Plus, if you thought Sarah Michelle Gellar's anti-"Buffy" reboot stance would slow the movie's progress down, you're in for a rude awakening: screenwriter Whit Anderson says it's very much still on track.

Not looking forward to that Joss Whedon-less "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot that's supposedly floating through Hollywood? Well, you're not alone.
Though she's remained very quiet on the subject so far, Sarah Michelle Gellar has finally opened up about her stance on the brand new "Buffy" movie that supposedly won't have anything to do with the beloved universe set forth by Whedon — a universe that still very much exists in the form of a Dark Horse comic book series, mind you.
"I think it's a horrible idea," she said bluntly in an interview with CNN (via Blastr). "To try to do a 'Buffy' without Joss Whedon, I mean that's, like, honestly, to be incredibly non-eloquent: that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

It's funny that we mused on the idea of vampires versus aliens earlier today, because "I Am Number Four" co-writer Marti Noxon is familiar with both.
In addition to contributing to the story of the Alex Pettyfer-starring sci-fi flick, Noxon was a regular presence on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the Joss Whedon-headed television series that kicked fang and staked names for several seasons, and continues to do so as a Dark Horse comic book series.
Even though Noxon's days on the "Buffy" front are over, the franchise itself is far from finished. A Whedon-less reboot is on the way from writer Whit Anderson, and from Noxon's perspective, it's hard to imagine anyone standing in the revered vampire slayer's shadow without Whedon's direct involvement.

Despite the fact that Joss Whedon was reportedly approached to make the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot but turned it down, we've always been against the idea that this franchise needed to be brought to the screen -- large or small -- in a third incarnation. Especially since the new film is going to ignore the mythology that Whedon created in his beloved television series (kind of like the reboot that must not be named) and return to the horror-comedy origins of the original "Buffy" starring Kristy Swanson.
That would be all well and good, except Access Hollywood is reporting that "Glee" star Heather Morris is one of the front runners to star in the film. And anyone who's seen a single episode of "Glee" should know that Morris steals every scene she's in as dumb-as-a-rock-but-hilarious Brittany Pierce. No seriously, this girl is hilarious, and we could definitely see her pulling off a good Buffy Summers. Read more...

Joss Whedon won't be "left to his pain" so much after this little "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" development. Warner Bros. has been made to seem like the Big Bad Guy in this situation when they chose to reboot "Buffy" without the involvement of Whedon, who wrote the screenplay for the original feature film and spearheaded the TV series.
Turns out Whedon actually was offered the first opportunity for a "Buffy" reboot, though -- at least that the tune WB insiders are singing -- which kind of takes away from our little Whedon pity fest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon decided to pass on the film because he'd rather work on other projects (read: "The Avengers") and it was only then that producers turned to unknown writer Whit Anderson. She came up with a version of the myth that captured the studios' attention, and Warner Bros. decided to go forward with the project even without Whedon. Read more...

Yesterday we got the news that Warner Bros. is rebooting the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" franchise with a new film.... but without the involvement of creator Joss Whedon, and presumably without "Buffy" film star Kristy Swanson and TV series headliner Sarah Michelle Gellar. We asked in a poll who you guys thought should play the titular vampire waster in the reboot, and so far you've almost unanimously endorsed Gellar's return to the title role. But if Whedon's sarcastic response to the reboot is any indication, that is not going to be happening any time soon.
"I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film," Whedon wrote in an email to E! Online. "This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself." Vampires are all the rage these days, what with the teen angst of the "Twilight Saga," the twenty-something angst of "The Vampire Diaries" and the soon-to-be historical angst of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" heating up the big and small screens. Now, the gal who made that perfect combo of teen angst and vampire slaying cool in the first place is headed back to theaters. Warner Bros. announced today that a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot is officially in the works.
The original "Buffy" movie hit screens back in 1992, with Kristy Swanson playing the stake-wielding slayer. But it was in 1997, when "Buffy" screenwriter Joss Whedon spearheaded a TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (pictured above) in the title role, that the sassy, ass-kicking slayer truly exploded into pop-culture consciousness. The show was a huge hit, catapulting Gellar to superstardom and, over the course of its seven-season run, racking up critical praise and a rabid fan base. Read more...
