Brad SilberlingThe “Garfield” movie got a sequel. The “Scooby-Doo” movie got a sequel. But “Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events,” which pulled in far more at the box office than either of those wearisome live-action adaptations of children’s entertainment properties, still has not seen a follow-up. And “Snicket” had Jim Carrey. Not to mention more than a dozen books to plump for material.

So what sequence of ill-fated actions prevented "Lemony"’s return after doing $120 million at the box office in 2004? Apparently, an inter-studio squabble between co-producers Paramount and Dreamworks. Now the dust seems to have settled and original director Brad Silberling is making plans to bring Mr. Snicket's -- the pseudonym of author Daniel Handler -- work back to the big screen as a stop-motion animated film. 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events'Earlier this week, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" director Brad Silbering -- who also directed next week's "Land of the Lost" -- mentioned that a return trip to author Daniel Handler's universe has not been forgotten. The director had this to say: "Daniel Handler and I stayed in touch [after 'A Series...'], and I think just charging off and doing another live-action movie is one way to go... [but] what I got excited about was the idea of completely turning [the franchise] on its ear and finding a whole other medium in which to work." Read more...

'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' director Brad SilberlingAre you still patiently waiting for more Count Olaf? It’s been five years since the adaptation of "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" hit theaters, a reasonable enough amount of time to assume that a sequel probably isn't going to happen. Of course, that doesn’t stop author Daniel Handler (aka “Lemony Snicket”) and adaptation director Brad Silberling from occasionally giving hope to fans. Silberling, whose new film “Land of the Lost” opens next week, recently had the following to say to CineFOOLS on the subject:

“I actually think it's going to see the light of day. [Handler and I] stay in constant touch about it, because I would love nothing more than to do that and we've been hoping to, so I think there will be a chance it may take a wildly different form, but I think it will probably happen.” Read more...
