There were few surprises as to what films were named as nominees during this morning's Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announcement of the 2011 Oscar nominees, but that is definitely a good thing. As suspected, "The King's Speech," "The Social Network" and "True Grit" led the pack. "The King's Speech" led the nominees with 13 nods, while "True Grit" had a surprising 10 and "The Social Network" had nine.
First up: the best picture race. In addition to the three films above, "The Fighter," "The Kids Are All Right," "Inception," "Winter's Bone," "Toy Story 3," "127 Hours" and "Black Swan" were all recognized. Those have been the front runners the whole race, and though "The Town" and "Blue Valentine" seemed somewhat likely to at least get a nomination, this was pretty much what was expected.

Some people love reading critics' reviews of movies, while other people hate them, but I think we can all unanimously agree that Rotten Tomatoes' aggregation of certified critics' reviews is one of the best movie resources on the web. The site's just listed the top 20 best-reviewed movies of 2010 (with a minimum of 60 reviews required), and the majority of them shouldn't be too surprising.
"Toy Story 3" took the top spot with 99 percent of the film's 247 reviews being positive. It's fitting, for once, that the top reviewed film of the year is also the highest grossing film of the year, and one of two movies in 2010 to gross over one billion dollars worldwide (the other is "Alice in Wonderland"). But what might surprise some people (especially those who didn't see it) is that another animated film, "How To Train Your Dragon," placed second on the list with 98 percent of its 156 reviews being positive. "How To Train Your Dragon" was the ninth highest grossing film of the year. Read more...

Earlier today, I posted an exclusive clip from the upcoming Ryan Gosling-Michelle Williams romantic drama "Blue Valentine" and lamented the fact that the film's NC-17 rating could severely limit its audience and potentially sabotage its awards prospects. Well, Gosling, Williams, the Weinstein Co. and anyone interested in seeing this flick in a theater can breath a sigh of relief.
Following a personal appeal from studio chief Harvey Weinstein, the MPAA has gone ahead and reversed its decision, changing the NC-17 it dealt "Blue Valentine" in October to a much more audience-friendly R, according to Variety.
The film had been hit with the NC-17 due to what the MPAA called a "shocking, gory depiction of a dying marriage"... which roughly translates to "a sex scene in which Gosling performs oral sex on Williams."
But according to Deadline, the MPAA ratings board unanimously voted to overturn their previous decision today. Perhaps they were swayed by arguments that other films featuring equally explicit oral sex scenes -- including the recently released critical darling "Black Swan" -- have received an R rating. Or perhaps they were just in the holiday spirit.
Whatever the case, the brand-spanking-new R rating means that 'Blue Valentine" can run promos on TV and run in national theater chains when it's released on December 31 -- two things it would not have been able to do with an NC-17. The fact that all this ratings ballyhoo has stirred up a ton of free PR for the film is just icing on the cake.
Are you glad "Blue Valentine" got its R rating? Tell us in the comments!

There's nothing quite like that feeling of first love. It makes you want to sing, to dance, to forget yourself and just enjoy the moment, which is exactly what Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams do in the exclusive clip from "Blue Valentine" below (props to Gosling for a decent voice and Williams for those tap-dance moves).
"Blue Valentine" tells the wrenching story of a married couple over the course of many years, jumping back and forth in time to depict both the rapture of their early love (see above) and the subsequent crumbling of their relationship. It's an intense, emotional film that's drawing critical raves and loads of awards buzz for stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. It's the kind of end-of-the-year film audiences can't wait to see. There's just one problem: They might not get the chance. Read more...

I wasn't at Sundance and so didn't catch the Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams-starring romantic drama, "Blue Valentine." I've heard from MTV Movies managing editor Josh Horowitz that it's great, tough to watch but well-made film nonetheless.
The story follows the relationship between Gosling and Williams' characters, jumping around in time as it paints a larger picture. I don't know much more than that, but I get the sense that if I did I wouldn't want to spoil it anyway. Get a sense for the film's tone in our exclusive fall preview clip below, highlighting the first meeting between our two main characters.

Today is Presidents Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the birthday of our first president, George Washington. While you're enjoying your day off from work, take a moment to think about the 44 presidents this country has seen. Better yet, take a moment to sing about it, with Michelle Williams, star of Sundance fave "Blue Valentine."
Seriously... she sings all of them.

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Over the past six seasons, "The Office" has had a number of great guest stars that would be hard—that's what she said—to beat. We're thinking of folks like Oscar-nominee Amy Ryan and bombshell Jessica Alba, who made a memorable cameo in a boot-legged video alongside Jack Black. But when we heard that Golden Globe host and series creator Ricky Gervais' dream guest star was Ryan Gosling, well, we nearly melted. Now if only Ryan were game. When we caught up with the 29-year-old while promoting his new flick "Blue Valentine" at the Sundance Film Festival, we just had to ask.
"I love it. He's my hero," Ryan said regarding Ricky and the proposed cameo. "He was like, 'Yeah, I think Ryan would be the perfect guy to play a total psycho, to go into his office and kill everybody," he added with a laugh. "Yeah, anytime. He's the best."

The MTV News Sundance gang is back in the office sifting through upwards of 70 interviews. Some were good. Some were funny. But none were as memorable as this one. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star in the heartbreaking drama "Blue Valentine." It's a shattering look at a very intimate relationship between two people who just can't connect.
You might think the conversation with the two thespians would mirror the drama. Oh, but you couldn't be more wrong. Watch below as I open my heart to Ryan Gosling in the opening moments of our chat and he educates me about a very particular kind of self-gratification. Dirty amazing stuff. Ryan Gosling just soared to the upper echelon of my favorite interviewee list.

Two of the hottest folks at the festival this year are undoubtedly the stars of "Blue Valentine," Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The duo portray a couple whose marriage begins to unravel, and the drama is receiving high praise here in Park City. So when the two came through the MTV studio this week, we were quick to ask them to snap a self-portrait.
You can see the result of that photo session below, and then click here for the rest of our photo booth, including Kristen Stewart, James Franco, Orlando Bloom, Mark Ruffalo, Malin Akerman and many more.

Ryan Gosling fans haven't had much to get excited about lately. The "Notebook" star hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2007, in "Lars and the Real Girl." Well you'll see him again soon enough, especially if you're out at the Sundance Film Festival over the next week. Gosling will star with Michelle Williams in the sure-to-please-the-ladies romance flick "Blue Valentine."
The story follows Gosling and Williams as a married couple. In a bid to save their troubled relationship, the pair take a trip to a theme hotel and attempt to relive their life together, from their first meeting to the problems that plague them today. In the exclusive clip below, Gosling demonstrates in grand fashion that he's unhappy and wants some answers. But how far will he go?
