Great Gatsby

It's not easy being Jay Gatsby — nor is it easy being the man who oversees him, apparently.

Though it's not an action movie by any stretch of the imagination (though it does veer off towards the thriller genre at points), production on "Great Gatsby" reportedly got a bit hairy over the holiday weekend when director Baz Luhrmann was injured on the film's Australian set following a collision with a camera crane, according to the Sydney Morning Herald (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"We were on quite a cramped set and he was ducking under the crane," "Gatsby" co-producer Anton Monstead told the Herald of the incident. "He struck his head on the weights on the end of the camera crane. He split open his head, and we had to get the doctor."

"The Great Gatsby" is the Great American Novel, or at least the one you were assigned to read in class before skipping ahead to SparkNotes. Adaptations have been done before, but why not another one? That's the thinking behind Baz Luhrmann's version, a sparkling 3D blockbuster with a budget over $100 million, a cast headed by multiple Oscar nominees and a Christmas 2012 opening date that basically screams, "We are going to win so many freaking awards."

Today, Warner Bros. released a handful of photos showing its actors in place. Check out Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy, looking appropriately dressed to the nines for this 1920s period piece.

One of the hottest upcoming films in Hollywood is Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," so it's no surprise that leading lady Carey Mulligan was a bit nervous about landing the role.

MTV News caught up with the "Never Let Me Go" star when she was at San Diego Comic-Con promoting her latest flick, "Drive," that costars Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston. According to her, waiting to hear back about the audition was quite a stressful experience for her.

"I auditioned for that when I was doing 'Drive,' so [director] Nick [Winding Refn] was there for the whole phone-ringing, agent, 'Ahh!' will I, won't I," Mulligan explained.

With the 10th anniversary of "Moulin Rouge" come and gone, director Baz Luhrmann has been teaming up to create a new film experience to capture the imagination of a generation: an adaptation of "The Great Gatsby."

MTV News caught up with the director last week and asked him about the project, which has had rumors of everything from leading actors to being filmed in 3-D. Luhrmann was hesitant to give too much away about the project, which he is still finalizing, but he is enthusiastic to begin the process of bringing the classic story to the screen.

"This is a perfectly structured novella and therefore a very good film is yet to be made that is exactly like the novella, to use the primary elements of the novella," he said. "So I thought, I really want to do this, and then took some time but finally bought the rights to it."

Baz Luhrmann is a man with many surprises up his sleeves, but sometimes doesn't do such a great job of keeping them a secret -- from us, at least. The last time we chatted with the director, Luhrmann let slip that in addition to his intended remake of "The Great Gatsby," he also had a project set in New York City that he wanted to work on.

So when we spoke with him yesterday during "Moulin Rouge At 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event," we brought up that secret project Luhrmann had previously mentioned -- and he seemed to have wished we'd forgotten about it!

"I just wish I'd shut up sometimes," he said with a laugh. Still, he did give us some clues as to what we can expect.

Earlier this afternoon, we celebrated ten years of "Moulin Rouge" alongside some of the musical masterpiece's most prominent players, including director Baz Luhrmann and stars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. But the fun doesn't end with our live-stream — we also have a deleted scene from "Moulin Rouge" for your viewing pleasure.

It's a very significant, substantial deleted scene, too: an alternate opening for "Moulin Rouge" that would have featured McGregor as Christian singing a unique rendition of Cat Stevens "Father & Son" — a scene that Luhrmann and his team were forced to abandon when Stevens raised concerns with the use of his song.

"Of all the things ten years ago that was the most difficult in the process of making 'Moulin Rouge' … came when we'd done a lot of work on an alternate opening to the film," the director reveals in this behind-the-scenes footage.

Jennifer LawrenceDown with the Capitol, and up with the casting of Katniss Everdeen!

Word on the street is that "Winter's Bone" lead and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence is leading the race for the starring role in the upcoming "Hunger Games" adaptation, though a source confirmed to MTV's Hollywood Crush that no offers have yet been made.

Meanwhile, Josh Hutcherson admitted at South by Southwest that he would love to play Peeta, one of the two love interests in the flick. We're expecting that the casting of Peeta will wait until Katniss is in the bag, but it's worth noting that Hutcherson has thrown his hat into the ring.

But "Hunger Games" isn't the only news in the arena. The first "Conan the Barbarian" trailer has hit the web, Baz Luhrmann has a "Great Gatsby" update. and more after the jump!

The Great GatsbyThere's little debate that "The Great Gatsby" is one of the great American novels, having inspired numerous film and television interpretations, not the least of which is the Robert Redford-starring film from 1974.

By now, you're probably aware that another "Great Gatsby" adaptation in on the way from director Baz Luhrmann, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular millionaire, Tobey Maguire as mild-mannered narrator Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby's love interest.

Except, the movie might not actually be on the way after all. Vulture spoke with Luhrmann at the Director's Guild Awards this past weekend, and the "Moulin Rouge!" filmmaker expressed his uncertainty about the project. Read More...

Baz LuhrmannNothing screams 3-D like a tragic love story set against the backdrop of Long Island in the swingin' '20s. At least that's the way filmmaker Baz Luhrmann sees it.

According to Forbes.com, last week the "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" writer-director told the audience at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that he has "workshopped" his upcoming take on "The Great Gatsby" in 3-D. While he has yet to decide whether the film will actually be presented in three dimensions, Luhrmann believes the format doesn't just have to be used for "gags" (think the airborne "man parts" in "Piranha 3D") or for "spectacle and drama" (as in "Avatar") as it has been thus far; he posits that it can be used for "poetic cinema" as well. Carey MulliganAfter much speculation, the role of Daisy Buchanan in the upcoming adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" has finally been cast, and it could not have gone to a more perfect actress. Deadline spoke with director Baz Luhrmann, who confirmed to them that he had tapped British starlet Carey Mulligan to play the pivotal love interest in the film.

"I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting," Luhrmann said. "However, specific to this particular production of 'The Great Gatsby,' I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: "Hello, Daisy Buchanan."
