You can't go a month in the movie industry without hearing scuttlebutt of the legendary "Arrested Development" movie — an oft-discussed project, yes, but elusive and viewed with some skepticism all the same.
But recent word from cast members and even a quasi-official announcement have offered a glimmer of hope towards the film's big screen prospects, and this weekend brought further fuel for that small-but-growing flame in the form of comments from series creator Mitch Hurwitz himself. Read more...
Like many of you, I've been of the mind that the much discussed "Arrested Development" movie was never going to happen, particularly given recent comments from Jason Bateman himself. But apparently, one should never say never, particularly where never-nudes are concerned.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the "Arrested Development" film is a go, with series mastermind Mitch Hurwitz and co-executive producer James Vallely working on the screenplay as we speak. The film will be produced by Imagine and Fox Searchlight, with Hurwitz himself set to direct. Read more...
Things aren't quite as dire as Jason Bateman initially leads us to believe in the video below, an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz at last week's Toronto International Film Festival. Still, the long-hoped-for "Arrested Development" movie certainly won't be seen at a theater near you anytime soon.
The only potentially "new" update is that series creator Mitch Hurwitz, now that his busy television season is over, is "intensely writing the movie." Otherwise, the story is pretty much the same as its been: it's Bateman's "guess" that said script is halfway done, his "guess" that "we'd be shooting in eight, nine, 10 months" and his "guess" that the movie would be out "six or seven months after that." Seriously, "Arrested Development" has become cinema's most prominent white whale. The fans -- myself included -- still cry about the unjust cancellation of the TV series, not to mention the fact that it wasn't picked up by anyone else despite pleas to that effect woven into the text of the final episodes. Creator Mitch Hurwitz has mentioned his movie plans, the cast members have been clear in expressing their willingness to participate, the fans continue to clamor for it... the continued absence of an "Arrested Development" movie is as baffling as it is frustrating.
Now there are a pair of new updates, from Jason Bateman and Tony Hale -- Michael and Buster Bluth on the show -- that the "Arrested" movie train continues to roll. The short answer is this: Hurwitz is still working on the script and there won't be any "next steps" taken until he's done. In other words, nothing's really changed. Want to know who said what and how? Hit the jump. Read more...
The headline is 100% true. Problem is, David Cross just isn't talking. Oh sure, he'll happily drop hints and suggestive comments, but he's leaving any major revelations for series creator Mitch Hurwitz to dish out. I suppose I can respect that. No, I can't. C'mon Cross... dish already!
He had a little bit to say this weekend, when MTV's Josh Horowitz sat down with the edgy comedian at the "Year One" press junket. Nothing particularly revealing mind you; just the same sort of teasing comments to get us excited about an "Arrested Development" movie. Read more...

It’s a question that has plagued TV-lovers for generations: what happens to all those canceled TV shows and their beloved characters when they vanish into pop culture oblivion? These days, they’re either relegated to DVD box sets or -- if they’re lucky -- they move on up to the big screen. To see a show that you’ve loved and lost make it to into movie form is pretty much every fan’s dream. So long as it's done right.
I get why fans of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series have been up in arms since news broke that the franchise will make its way to theaters without the help of show creator Josh Weldon. The news kind of sucks for "Buffy" fans, but it got me thinking of all the other shows I love and miss. Read more...
If you’re like any of us at MTV News, you’re probably wondering what keeps holding up the big screen adaptation of “Arrested Development” from moving forward. Well, now we have our answer: the new Fox show, “Sit Down, Shut Up.”
Mitch Hurwitz’s animated comedy debuted earlier this month, and between writing and producing that series, and developing other television projects, the “Arrested” creator hasn’t had a chance to start writing a script for his Emmy-winning Fox show that was canceled in 2006, says “Arrested” producer/narrator Ron Howard.
“Still waiting on a script,” Howard told MTV News this week. “Mitch’s television company was very successful—good for Mitch—and slowed things up a little bit for ‘Arrested Development’ fans.” Read more...

When MTV News caught up with Michael Cera in January, the actor labeled the long-gestating "Arrested Development" film as "more hypothetical than people think." His co-star Will Arnett apparently agrees.
“There’s no script as of right now, but it’s something that Mitch [Hurwitz] is actively working and getting ready for, and we’re hoping to start shooting by the end of the year," he told us. "I know that’s one of the goals. There are a lot of pieces that have to come together. There are what, like, nine cast members plus various other people like Mitch and Ron Howard, and everybody kind of has to get their brain around this one delicious soufflé.”
Arnett also laughed at the media’s obsession with the idea of a Bluth family reunion on the bigscreen. “God, I’ve never known a movie who’s every step of development has been as closely followed. This movie’s gonna be such a disaster,” joked the actor, who plays devious magician Gob. Read more...
The status of the “Arrested Development” movie has vexed and teased fans of the Emmy-winning Fox show almost since the day it was unjustly canceled. The project’s various rumors -- it’s happening! It’s dead! Wait, it’s totally on again! -- were more confusing than Tobias Fünke’s sexual preferences. Last month at Sundance, Michael Cera told MTV News that there was no script and he didn’t even know if he’d reprise his role as George Michael Bluth. Then co-star Jeffrey Tambor hit back, claiming Cera was in and the movie would film before the end of the year.
It seemed like every time a cast member opened his mouth, the mystery only deepened. So when we had the chance to speak with executive producer Ron Howard on the red carpet at the Oscars, we asked him to kick us some truth. He did, and now MTV News can exclusively confirm that the “Arrested Development” is happening.
“It’s going ahead,” Howard confirmed. Read more...
During a recent interview with MTV News, Michael Cera refuted rumors that he was the lone hold-out on an "Arrested Development" movie. At least one man at the top agrees. Speaking with MTV, Ron Howard laughed off any sign of worry that Michael Cera won’t be onboard for a big-screen feature. Despite the long-gestating nature of the project, the “Frost/Nixon” director remained positive.
“There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm within the cast,” said Howard. Asked if he thought the original “Arrested Development” cast would be reassembled for the film, he was optimistic. “I think so. I haven’t spoken to everybody, but everybody loved doing the show.” Read more...
