"Paranormal Activity" is one of the most impressive theatrical releases of the year, what with its miniscule budget and still-rapidly-climbing box office performance. As a result, everyone has been all sorts of curious to hear more about director Oren Peli's next project, titled "Area 51."

Peli has been adamant in his refusal to share any details about the movie, which is described as another "found footage" effort in the vein of "Paranormal." In the two times I've interviewed him, I don't even think he repeated the title; every question on the subject is greeted with a "no comment." Now, the first details have come to light. --Eli Roth, who recently starred alongside Brad Pitt in "Inglourious Basterds," is certainly keeping busy. Speaking in Mexico at the Morelia Film Festival, Roth revealed that he'll soon be showing "Cotton" to the Sundance team for a potential January 2010 festival premiere and that he's currently busy developing scripts for sci-fi project "Endangered Species" and "Grindhouse" tie-in "Thanksgiving." FROM SPLASH PAGE: Grant Morrison is knee-deep in aliens these days as he finishes up a script for Paramount called "Area 51." And while you've seen Area 51 depicted a number of different ways in television and movies over the years -- from "Independence Day" to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" -- this one, he said, will offer something new.

"It's a new take on the mythology," Morrison promised.

Morrison's version is an adaptation of the Midway video game, in which a viral outbreak shuts down a research facility, the scientific and military personnel are locked inside under quarantine, and a small special forces unit led by the hazardous materials division investigates. In the game, the main character from HAZMAT discovers that the mutated virus controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility, and he has to solve several mysteries and uncover many conspiracies -- including men in black to the Illuminati -- to prevent the virus from being released and mutating life on Earth.
