We all learned over the summer that Ridley Scott, director of the original "Alien," will be returning to the franchise he created to direct a prequel. Given the series' overarching story, fans very reasonably speculated that a prequel would take a look at the events immediately preceding the first movie.
It seems that may not be an accurate assumption anymore. Scott, who in London recently to support his daughter's entry at the London Film Festival, took some time out to chat with Empire about some of his plans for the prequel. He doesn't drop any specific narrative bombs, but there is a general outline of the "when" fans can expect to be deposited into. Read more...
Paul W.S. Anderson was finishing up post-production on his franchise-melding sci-fi flick, “AVP: Alien vs. Predator,” when he sat down to read a script that very much reminded him of one of the progenitors of his film: Ridley Scott’s 1979 deep space horror classic, “Alien.”
The script was simply terrifying, Anderson told MTV News in a recent interview. It was based on an original idea as opposed to the sequel-itis Hollywood had fallen victim to, and it contained mind-bending sci-fi concepts. He decided he had to make the movie. Read more...
Many movie lovers struggle when asked what their favorite films of all time are, but not me. My answer has been and always will be "Aliens." I'm not saying that it's the very best movie ever created, but it's certainly the one that most inspired me as a fan of what the movie medium can achieve. It should therefore come as no shock that the "Alien" franchise at large is unquestionably my favorite franchise in cinema history.
I love Ellen Ripley. Sigourney Weaver holds a special place in my heart for bringing one of the most courageous, cunning and capable heroines out there to the big screen, owing no small thanks to both Ridley Scott ("Alien" director) and James Cameron ("Aliens" director). Indeed, while Scott's contributions to the "Alien" universe are enormous -- after all, he literally invented the wheel in this case -- it's the realization of Ripley that was the secret ingredient in both "Alien" and "Aliens." All of us here at MTV are excited for Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel. The director hasn't had anything to do with the series since the 1979 original, which is a bonafide classic. To honor Scott and his lasting contribution to badass women in film, we've paired up the lovely duo of MTV contributor Jenni Miller and Photoshop ninja/digital producer Sohyung Kang to produce a magical list of five leading ladies who could rock Ripley.
Although there aren't any hard and fast deets out there concerning Ridley Scott's prequel to "Alien," I've got my fingers crossed for a female badass to rival Sigourney Weaver's iconic Ripley. Since Weaver has stated publicly she doesn't think Ripley could be part of an "Alien" prequel, I have a few suggestions as to who could fulfill the role of cinema's favorite alien-killing, kitty-saving, space-feminist. The franchise has admittedly flagged a bit in more recent outings, but the news that original "Alien" director Ridley Scott is stepping up to helm a prequel is nothing less than exciting. He left the series after that first movie. James Cameron's sequel was excellent, but the two subsequent entries from directors David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet went downhill fast. Let's not even talk about half-alien/half-human hybrids. Ever.
Still, Sigourney Weaver's turn as Ripley in those films, particularly the first two, represents a formative moment for female action heroes. So naturally, MTV's Josh Horowitz asked her about Scott's upcoming prequel when he spoke to her at San Diego Comic-Con. Ripley obviously won't be showing up in it, but she had some lovely things to say about her former director and about the franchise as a whole.
