Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

"Blomkvist and Salander have an odd relationship." Daniel Craig seems to be putting the emotional core of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" a bit lightly in the excerpt from this month's Empire magazine cover story, but that relationship is exactly what the sexy photos released from the issue are highlighting.

From Craig's Blomkvist handcuffed to a chair, to Rooney Mara's Salander blowing cigarette smoke into his mouth, the newest images from the film are showing off director David Fincher's knack for sexy, sexy filmmaking. As if you had any doubts, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is looking much closer to Fincher's work on "Fight Club" than on last year's "The Social Network."

As if we didn't already have enough reasons to be excited for Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity," Guillermo del Toro is here to vouch that it's going to blow our minds.

It's a movie that's taken a very long time to get into production, and even had James Cameron skeptical of its scope. But I didn't put it on my list of movies that desperately needed to be put through production in 2011 for nothing, and with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the lead roles it seems like it could be certifiably great. Del Toro seems to think that it's going to change sci-fi films as we know them.

"I'm amazed at Alfonso the past few movies because he's completely transformed himself," he said when MTV News spoke with him recently. "['Gravity' is] incredibly well-calculated. Very human, if you know the story."

Marion CotillardIf there was still a small part of you that thought that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's casting in "The Dark Knight Rises" as some cruel joke, let those fears officially be put to rest.

Warner Bros. released a statement today announcing that Christopher Nolan's oft-rumored "Inception" collaborators are indeed a part of "The Dark Knight Rises," though not necessarily in the roles you'd expect. Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a board member at Wayne Enterprises, and Gordon-Levitt has been tapped for John Blake, a Gotham City cop under Commissioner Gordon. Despite that, though, our friends over at Splash Page think Nolan might still be keeping some tricks up his sleeve. They think there's still a chance Cotillard could be playing Talia Al Ghul, and we're betting that there's more than meets the eye to JGL's cop as well.

After the jump, "Fast Six" gets a writer, "Red State" makes a profit, and finally some good news for "Gravity."

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceNo need to fear, all you fans of "Harry Potter" in 3D out there. Despite Warner Bros.'s announcement earlier this week that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" would not be released in 3-D as initially planned because the post-production work could not be completed in time for its November 19 release, Variety reports that Warner Bros. is in the process of converting all four of director David Yates' "Harry Potter" titles into 3-D for Blu-Ray.

Right now, work has already begun on "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," with "Order of the Phoenix" to be the next in line. The conversion is being done by Prime Focus, who received a lot of flack for their shoddy last-minute conversion of "Clash of the Titans," but hopefully they have learned their lesson since. Variety reports that the 3D work is "proceeding methodically." Read More...

Sandra BullockLast year, Sandra Bullock scored the two biggest box-office hits of her career, "Alfonso Cuarón's 3-D space thriller "Gravity."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bullock is in negotiations to star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the film that has already seen a bevy of beautiful A-list actresses come and go.

Originally set up as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie, Brangelina's poutier-lipped half departed the flick when Warner Bros. reportedly balked at her $20 mil salary. This summer, the studio talked to Marion Cotillard, screen-tested Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively, then shifted their gaze back to Jolie. None of this yielded a leading lady, so WB started talks with Natalie Portman, who's garnering the strongest buzz of her career for the upcoming psychological thriller "Black Swan." Read More...

I just hate this. Alfonso Cuaron is a talented filmmaker and his son Jonas wrote a sci-fi script for a movie called "Gravity" which sounds pretty great. They were going to do it with Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr in starring roles, with plans to shoot after Downey finished his work on the "Sherlock Holmes" sequel.

I speak of all of this in the past tense because that may no longer be the case. The word today is that Jolie has dropped out completely, the better to focus on her other commitments, Deadline reports. Downey is still a big name of course, but the story -- which follows two astronauts left stranded in outer space after their space station explodes, with one of them making desperate plans to get back to her daughter on Earth -- frames the female lead as the one responsible for carrying the story. Back in February we heard about this upcoming sci-fi flick from director Alfonso Cuaron called "Gravity" that was set to star Angelina Jolie. The story follows the star's character as she tries to get home to her daughter after being stranded in outer space.

Then everything changed. Jolie departed. Robert Downey Jr. signed on. A replacement for Jolie was needed; the movie is still pinned to following this female survivor who ends up stranded in space. But how do you replace someone whose star shines as brightly as Jolie's? You take your time. That's what Cuaron has been doing. And now The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the search has been narrowed to two contenders: Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively. Which would you choose? Which is right for the role? I weight the possibilities after the jump. Read More...

In 2008, Angelina Jolie appeared in a pseudo-comic book adaptation of "Wanted." I say pseudo because the movie had very little to do with the source when all was said and done. Still, the insanely well-staged and stylized action sequences masterminded by director Timur Bekmambetov left fans clamoring for more, and more was reportedly moving along swiftly.

That's now past-tense because Jolie is looking to team with "Children of Men" director Alfonso Cuaron for another work of pure sci-fi, this one set in outer space, called "Gravity." The star's departure reportedly prompted Universal to cancel the "Wanted" sequel, the second swing of a one-two punch since the Warner Bros-owned "Gravity" was once in Uni's hands. Read More...

"The Tourist" has had quite a ride these past few months. Further back than that even. First it was a possible "Valkyrie" follow-up for Tom Cruise. Then Charlize Theron started negotiating to star alongside Cruise. Following a year of silence on the project, the news broke last month that Angelina Jolie was now in talks to replace Theron. And somewhere in there, "Terminator Salvation" star Sam Worthington stepped in to replace Cruise.

That's not even mentioning the director changes. Bharat Nalluri was originally set to direct, way back when Cruise was still on the project. He fell off somewhere in the past year, and "The Lives of Others" director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck only recently stepped in to possibly replace him. It turns out that that's not happening either. Now it seems that "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" director Alfonso Cuaron may be moving in to helm, and that he'll be joined by Johnny Depp, who will step into the role once occupied by Cruise, then Worthington. Whew. Read More...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceIt’s been eight years since the first "Harry Potter" film hit the big screen, and in that time the franchise has gone through half as many directors. With Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and now David Yates putting their skills to work on bringing J.K. Rowling's works to life, the various novels have been interpreted in a variety of ways.

“Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” director Chris Columbus had the tough job of being the first to adapt the biggest children’s novel series of all time. He was further challenged with having to commit those books to film before Harry Potter’s story had even been finished; only the first four novels had been released when “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” hit theaters.
