
Frolicking teenagers, campy comedy, swarms of blood-thirsty fish: what’s not to love? 1978’s “Piranha” is a gem of a B-movie genre flick, and count horror buff Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”) among its many admirers.
In fact, he’s set to begin filming a big budget remake on Monday. This time they’ll have, of course, a vastly bigger budget. And an admirable cast of actors. And it’ll be in 3-D. What’s not to love?

Now available on DVD, Alexandre Aja's "Mirrors" tells the surreal story of an ex-cop trying to pull all the broken parts of his life together. Taking a job as a night watchman guarding the ruins of a horrific fire, Ben Carson (Keifer Sutherland) is haunted by a terrifying alternate world, appearing as monstrous visions within the store's mirrors. Soon, the otherworldly spirits reach out through reflections everywhere, driving Carson mad and threatening even his grasp on sanity.
Aja, famous for his French-language film "High Tension" and later for the 2006 remake of "The Hills Have Eyes," spoke with MTV News about the film and what keeps calling him back to the horror genre.
"I was looking for something different to do after the others," said Aja, "I didn't want to do a survival movie or a slasher movie. I wanted to explore the other side of the genre. I wanted to explore the supernatural side." Read more...
It's been 30 years since Joe Dante unleashed "Piranha" on an unsuspecting public. Well if audiences then were taken aback by the film's absurd blend of horror and comedy they ain't seen nothing yet because "High Tension" director Alexandre Aja wants to assault your senses in wall to wall 3D with his upcoming re-imagining.
"It's going to be unique because it’s going to be completely in 3D," the youthful Frenchman told MTV News at Comic-Con. Completely in 3D?!? And I'm still getting over those few scenes shot in IMAX for "The Dark Knight." "I think people don’t realize the effect of all the elements coming out from the screen at you.
