Mark WahlbergWondering what Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell's new football comedy is all about? Well, wonder no more!

Adam McKay, who worked with the hilarious duo on last year's "The Other Guys," sat down with Entertainment Weekly and revealed the origins behind the comedy he's tentatively calling "Three Mississippi." According to the filmmaker, the movie was grown from a surprising source — none other than Martin Scorsese's Academy Award winning "The Departed."

"The idea was originally conceived for Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin," said McKay. "Owen Burke, who’s a producer at Gary Sanchez, and I were talking about how crazily funny Wahlberg and Baldwin were in The Departed — how, even though it’s not a comedy, we could just watch them all day long. Burke dropped this idea, and I was like, 'Oh my God, that’s a movie!' Then Will heard it and he wanted in."

TerminatorThe biggest news to come out of Cannes today concerns our future: specifically, the post apocalyptic "Terminator" series is going indie.

Or, at least it's been purchased by "indie savior" Megan Ellison, who Deadline is estimating spent around $20 million to acquire the rights to the "Terminator" franchise. Considering that Ellison's Annapruna Films is behind Kathryn Bigelow's "Kill Bin Laden" and Paul T. Anderson's next picture, her involvement is nothing but good news for the developing "Terminator" sequel.

In the news after the jump, "Dark Shadows" gets a release date, a major star stays on board for "Rock of Ages" and the first shot of Bruce Willis in Rian Johnson's "Looper" hits the web.

Rachel WeiszRachel Weisz is following the yellow brick road, and it's leading her to… Jason Bourne's replacement?

Following up on last week's report that the Oscar-winning actress was in talks for a role in Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful" comes word from Deadline that Weisz is in even deeper talks to join Jeremy Renner in "The Bourne Legacy." No details on who Weisz would be playing, sadly, and it's possible that she won't be able to pursue both projects due to overlapping shooting schedules. As always, stay tuned.

There's plenty more casting news past the jump, including Alec Baldwin's potential departure from "Rock of Ages" and Kiefer Sutherland's latest heist!

Blake LivelyWith Jennifer Lawrence signed to "The Hunger Games," Blake Lively is ready to get savage.

Lawrence's departure from Oliver Stone's latest, "Savages," has opened the door for hot young Hollywood actresses from Olivia Wilde to Teresa Palmer to land the lead role, but now Variety has the news that Stone wants Lively to play main female character Ophelia. That's all well and good, except The Playlist has the news that she's also looking to join Mila Kunis and James Franco in "Oz: The Great and Powerful," so nothing is set in stone yet.

After the jump, Michael Shannon talks his casting as General Zod in "Superman," a main "American Pie" actress returns for their "Reunion" and Alec Baldwin and Jesse Eisenberg could be headed towards Woody Allen's latest.

Franco and HathawayThey've got Icarus-inspired high-tops and T-shirts that warn, "Oscar Host-in-Training." What they don't seem to have, unfortunately, is a clue. Welcome to the lives of James Franco and Anne Hathaway in the run up to their joint hosting gig of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards (or, at least, their lives as presented in one of two new promos for the award show).

The promo casts Franco and Hathaway as sweetly naive newbies attempting to prepare for the worst possible live-show disasters: a potentially breast-revealing wardrobe malfunction, a mid-dance mishap that leaves Hathaway flying across the stage. Another ad shows them, perhaps less creatively, working on their promotional lines. Are they effective ads? Do the 15-second spots make us want to tune into the proceedings on February 27? Because, for better or worse, it won't just be the quality of the program and its winners that establish the show's legacy but the number of viewers who tune to watch it all unfold. Read More...

Russell BrandWhen you're thinking of casting for the upcoming big screen adaptation of Broadway musical "Rock of Ages," obviously the first three names to come to mind are Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and Russell Brand. No? Well start picturing them, because those are the actors who are attached so far. Deadline has the news that Brand is looking to come on board as club worker Lonny. He works under club owner Dennis, a role that Alec Baldwin is allegedly circling. Getting excited yet?

The film is set to start production in May, once all the actors fall into place. Cruise would be playing decadent rock star Stacee Jax. Lonny is the narrator of the film, who tells the story of an aspiring rocker named Drew Bowie who also starts working for Dennis. Bowie's romantic interest would likely be Paltrow, if she's playing Sherrie. Bowie has yet to be cast, and neither have German bad guys Hertz and Franz, nor city planner Regina or fellow club owner Justice. But, well, there's still time. Read More...

Gemma ArtertonCasting is coming together for "Men In Black 3," and the names of those newly announced should get you plenty pumped for the upcoming threequel. The film will take place in both the present day and in 1969, and follow the MIB employees -- Will Smith's Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones's Agent K -- that we have come to know and love, as well as some newcomers.

According to Pajiba, Alec Baldwin is in negotiations to come aboard as the '69 Men In Black boss, while erstwhile Bond girl Gemma Arterton would play a secretary during that same period. "District 9" and "A-Team" star Sharlto Copley, meanwhile, is in negotiations to play what Pajiba describes as a "fast-talking Yoda type alien." Read More...

If the existence of the "MacGruber" movie teaches me anything, it's you can turn absolutely any "Saturday Night Live" sketch—no matter how short and how much they always end with the title character (presumably) dying in a huge explosion—into a full-fledged film. It certainly isn't the first time a movie came out based on an "SNL" concept; previous outings include "Blue Brothers," "Wayne's World," "Superstar" "A Night at the Roxbury" and "The Ladies Man."

With "MacGruber" exploding his way into theaters everywhere today, I took a look at five other relatively recent "SNL" sketches that could work as feature films.

As I watched the Oscars last night, two inescapable facts became increasingly clear as the night wore on. One: Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, for all their comedic talents, were less than ideal choices to co-host the show. Two: Neil Patrick Harris should have mastered the ceremonies in their stead.

NPH, who was recently confirmed as the live-action lead in the coming adaptation of classic '80s cartoon "The Smurfs," opened the show with a rousing, Broadway-style musical number. See for yourself:

He was on fire, a vibrant presence on that stage and -- as we soon learned -- an impossible act to follow for co-hosts Baldwin and Martin. There they stood, belting out predictable joke after predictable joke, with almost every one of them falling flat. At one point, it looked like the cool, collected George Clooney might rise out of his seat and strangle the both of them. They didn't even knock the guy too hard; he was probably just overwhelmed by the magnitude of their mark-missing. Read More...

So it's official. First Alec Baldwin, followed by Harrison Ford, then Ben Affleck for a hot minute, and now Chris Pine. The "Star Trek" star will take over the role of Jack Ryan in the first adaptation of Tom Clancy's book series since 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."

Just before this confirmation dropped—courtesy of producer Mace Neufeld—MTV News spoke with Pine about the prospect of becoming Ryan on-screen. After blowing people away with his reworking of William Shatner's iconic take on James T. Kirk, how hard could it be to make Ryan his own? No easy feat, Pine said, but undoubtedly less daunting than his "Star Trek" challenge. Read More...
