One of the most exciting films to be announced for this year's Sundance was Beastie Boy Adam Yauch's short "Fight For Your Right Revisited." It's not just that the film was a follow-up to their classic music video for "Fight For Your Right (To Party)," it was that Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride were going to be starring as the Beastie Boys themselves in the sequel, with cameos from Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black.

When MTV caught up with Rogen while he was promoting "Green Hornet," he explained that it didn't take too much to get him on board the project. "I literally got a phone call from MCA one day," he explained. "It was funny because we were in our office, and [writing partner] Evan [Goldberg] was sitting across from me, and I was like, 'Yeah, MCA? Yeah, yeah, OK, whatever you want! OK, sounds perfect.' And he was like, 'What just happened?' I was like, 'I think I'm going to be in a Beastie Boys video.'" Read More...

I just received a very troubling press release from Oscilloscope Laboratories, the production company founded and operated by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. The word is that their upcoming Holocaust documentary, "A Film Unfinished," has received an R-rating from the MPAA for "disturbing images of Holocaust atrocities including graphic nudity." There've been a lot of hateful comments bubbling to the surface lately from public figures whose names aren't worth mentioning, but whom you probably all know quite well. But this is crossing a line, and Yauch agrees.

In a statement, he said "This is too important of a historical document to ban from classrooms. While there’s no doubt that Holocaust atrocities are displayed, if teachers feel their students are ready to understand what happened, it’s essential that young people are giving the opportunity to see this film. Why deny them the chance to learn about this critical part of our human history? I understand that the MPAA wants to protect children’s eyes from things that are too overwhelming, but they’ve really gone too far this time. It’s bulls--t."

He's 100% right. Read More...

Adam YauchIn light of today's heartbreaking news about Beastie Boys frontman Adam Yauch, I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate the group's lasting contributions to cinema here on MTV Movies Blog. Whether you know it or not, the Beastie Boys -- and Yauch in particular -- have deep roots in the world of film. I'll always think of them most fondly for the album "Licensed to Ill," one of the first cassette tapes I ever owned, but it's hard to deny the impact the Beastie Boys' presence have had on Hollywood.

For starters, the group's music has been featured on the soundtracks of a varied assortment of movies, including "Pump Up the Volume," "The Jerky Boys," "Above the Rim," "Kids," "La haine," hip hop DJ documentary "Scratch" and, most recently, J.J. Abrams' summer '09 reboot of "Star Trek." Their hit song "Sabotage," off of the album "Ill Communication," was also featured in the video game "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" and was famously covered by the recently reunited jam-rock quartet Phish.
